Water is very important for life. We need water to drink, to wash our hands, to cook, to water plants and many other things. Without water, the plants would die and people and animals would go thirsty. Water is a chemical substances with the chemical formula H2O.Its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms connected by covalent bonds. Water is a liquid at ambient conditions, but it often co-exists on Earth with its solid state, ice, and gaseous state (water vapor or steam). Water also exists in a liquid crystal state near hydrophilic surfaces.

Water UsesThe uses of water are many, from drinking and cleaning to irrigating crops and landscapes. Water is used for cooling, for recreation, and dust control. Water is needed for restaurants, most industrial processes, and even some religious ceremonies. On another level, the splash and flow of water in streams and fountains soothes and inspires.

Water MoleculeThe water molecule is formed from two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. The bonding angle of the two hydrogen's is almost 105 degrees rather than 180 degrees which would make the molecule symmetrical. This causes it to be dipolar, giving it a positive and negative side which accounts for its unique properties. This allows the formation of hydrogen bonds between adjacent molecules. There is a weak intermolecular force of electrostatic attraction between the molecules which is known as van der Waals force. This causes the molecules to act as larger units than the individual molecules.

Lawmaker Attempts To Set Limit On Tap Water Carcinogen

A state lawmaker wants California to set limits on a known carcinogen

in tap water. Democratic Assemblywoman Nora Campos has a bill that

would require the state’s Department of Public Health to set a

standard for hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium six. The

chemical gained infamy in the movie Erin Brokovich.

Campos, who lives in San Jose, points to a recent study by the

Environmental Working Group. She said it found chromium six levels

that were higher than California’s proposed public health goals in

more than two dozen U.S. cities.
