Ellie
Joey is a 4 year old male American Bull Dog Mix. He's a happy boy, constantly wagging his tail and
smiling. He loves playing fetch with the ball, good with older children,
housebroken and neutered. Joey is a fun & loyal companion! For more information please call
518-424-2878.
Ellie has been with HOPE for about one year — last fall she came in with her two kittens Fiona and Crowley
(now already 1 year old themselves). Ellie needed some time to get used to living with people but now she's ready for adoption. She's very shy but very friendly once you get to know her....interactive playtime and
food is the quickest way to her heart. Ellie is hoping for a quieter home where she can interact with adults in a gentle
and easygoing environment. If you're looking for quiet cat that likes to lounge about and keep you company but doesn't need a fuss made over her, then Ellie's your gal. She does like a bit of interactive play each day and she'll
need some patience at first while she gets used to her new family. Miss Ellie will make sweet and loving companion. Ellie is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for
FIV and Feline Leukemia.

At last it is fi nally February; a month whose primary virtue is that it is only 28 days long. By the time you’re halfway through it, it is almost over! One thing February has to offer holiday-wise is Valentine’s Day. So, how did this romantic holiday come about? It turns out that “romantic” is a very appropriate term since Valentine’s Day appears to have originated from an ancient Roman fertility rite. The Roman holiday Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th to honor the founders of Rome and also to purify the women of Rome. This was accomplished as the priests of Lupercalia struck the women (gently, I hope) with the skin of a freshly slain goat called a “februa”. How amusing that my least favorite month of winter is named after the skin of a dead goat…just something else to not like about Febru-ary. Anyway, Roman tradition led them to believe that this grisly ritual would assure them fertility and easy childbirth.
Another aspect of this Roman holiday was the pairing of young boys and girls for the duration of the festivities. Later, as Rome was in its decline, the emperor Claudius the Cruel banned all marriages and engagements in an attempt to keep his legions at full strength. An early Christian priest named Valentine defi ed the emperor and continued to perform mar-riages in secret. Valentine was imprisoned for this transgression and died (or was executed according to other accounts) on February 14th in 270 A.D.
As Christianity spread, the original pagan fertility fl avor of the day was replaced with celebration of romantic love with the now Saint Valentine functioning as the patron saint of love.
Learning all this about Valentine’s Day didn’t increase its appeal as far as I’m concerned and I’ve decided that I MUCH prefer our modern customs of exchanging cards and fl owers with our loved ones to celebrate our affection for one another. As I’ve said before (and you can quote me), I’m pretty sure that my wife would rather get fl owers than a fl ogging with a dead animal’s skin.
Naturally, roses are high on the list of preferred gifts for Valentine’s day. Traditionally these are roses that are cut, bundled together with baby’s breath (now where did THAT name come from?) and presented to the object of our affection.
In the past I’ve presented such roses. These days however, I’m blessed with a wife who is as enamoured with fl ower gardening as I am. So, rather than giving my one true love cut rose that can only last a week or so, I prefer to give her a gift that refl ect the everlasting nature of my affection; a fl owering miniature rose bush!
I must not be the only one who prefers to give miniature roses bushes since they are now widely available at garden centers during Valentine’s week. What many who receive one as a gift fail to realize is that miniature roses, as delicate as they appear, are winter hardy. This means that they can be planted permanently in the garden (in a very sunny spot) and will endure our harsh winter and return each spring. I (or, rather, my wife) has one that will be starting its fi fth growing season this spring. One of the reasons these little beauties are so hardy is that they are NOT grafted roses. Grafted roses have the stems of one type of rose that’s not hardy grafted to the roots of another type that is hardy. If the stems (canes) are killed over winter, the shoots that emerge from below the graft will not have the same fl owers as the grafted canes.
Miniature roses aren’t grafted. This means that, even if the stems are killed over winter, the roots will send up new growth that will produce fl owers in abundance when summer rolls around. Remember that miniature roses that are sold on Valentine’s day have been grown in greenhouses to produce fl owers for the holiday. You’ll need to keep them growing on a sunny windowsill and wait until it’s nice and warm (June) before you transplant them into your garden. They’ll probably lose some of their leaves after the fl owers fi nish. Don’t overreact and over water when this happens. Just keep plucking off the spent fl owers and leaves and wait until planting time. Once they adjust to their new sunny location in your garden, they’ll fl ower again and again and come back year after year to remind your sweet-heart of just how thoughtful and romantic you really are. Thanks for the read.

Hearts and Valentine’s Day are forever intertwined. One of the most recognizable symbols of love is the mod-est heart, and hearts adorn candy boxes and cook-ies while paper hearts are pinned to doors or windows as a symbol of Valentine’s Day. Young valentines may share candy hearts printed with silly sentiments.
A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomi-cal heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of aff ection a per-son can share. Some may wonder just how the emo-tions of love became tied up in the shape of a heart, even though it’s widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs aff ections.
In ancient times, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emotions. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it be-came the cornerstone of hu-man feelings. Love is consid-ered to be one of the most profound and strongest hu-man emotions, therefore it was reasoned that the feel-ing must emanate from the heart.
Surprisingly, the heart has not always been the only organ associated with love. During the Middle Ages, the heart was deemed a use-less organ. Followers of the Greek physician Galen theo-rized that the liver actually was the seat of the soul and love.
The fi rst depictions of a symbolic heart date back to the 11th century, when the heart was drawn to resem-ble a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upward. The scalloped heart that is more familiar today

fi rst arose in the early 14th century. Around the same time, the heart was depicted with the point facing down-ward and the indentation at the base.
Naturally, as time passed and more was learned about human anatomy, it became obvious that the brain was the seat of all emotion and thought processes. How-ever, as the brain was some-thing intangible in a living body in ancient times, and the beating heart could be much more readily moni-tored — with a pulse rate speeding up when a person is excited or aroused — it’s easy to see how the link be-tween the heart and love has endured.
Although the human heart is not bright red like symbolic hearts, that was the color
chosen. Red has long been associated with passion, so it made sense to depict the heart in a bright red hue.
Many other theories have been off ered regarding the symbolic heart and its rep-resentation of love. While there’s no defi nitive cor-relation between love and hearts, the heart has be-come an accepted symbol of the emotion and the season of romance.

Street Pups
K9 Litter
This beautiful litter was found abandoned in a box on a street corner with a
sign "Free Puppies". One of our rescuers
immediately grabbed the litter and brought them to
the vet for care. These babies seem to be Lab mixes, fully vetted, wormed and first shots.
They are around 8 weeks old.
This litter is an owner turn in from a high kill
shelter down south. Both the mother and father are unknown
so breed is best guess. Perhaps some hound?
Regardless, they are cuties and in need of
forever homes.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Valentine’s Day evokes strong emotions in so many people. On the offi cial day of all things love, many ea-gerly anticipate the chance to spend time with their sweethearts.
Couples who already have hearts in their eyes and are enamored with all things Valentine’s Day may want to tie the knot on this special holiday, and few can argue when a couple decides to become husband and wife on this day devoted to love and aff ection.
Valentine’s Day is a popular day to tie the knot, as more than two million people choose February 14 to walk
down the aisle in the United States alone.
Valentine’s Day is an easy day to remember, meaning it will be hard for husbands and wives to forget their wedding anniversaries.
Another benefi t to getting married on Valentine’s Day is the ambiance may already be taken care of by various establishments in the com-munity. Reception halls may be embellished with fl owers, balloons and other décor, while businesses may already be display-ing hearts in their windows and twinkling pink, red and white lights for Valentine’s-focused customers.
Couples who may not know which colors to choose for their wedding parties and table linens can just go with the colors and themes of Valentine’s Day if they de-cide to tie the knot on Feb-ruary 14. Chocolate brown, red, lavender, and pink are primary hues for the season, and any combination will complement the festivities and ceremony — whether they’re the color of the nap-kins or making up the bou-quet.
Valentine’s Day treats and trinkets make for great wed-ding favors. Guests can take home individual boxes of chocolates or crystal candle
votives, while buff et dessert tables can be embellished with vases fi lled with choco-late kisses or candied hearts.
Couples looking for a special day to tie the knot need not look any further than Valen-tine’s Day, a day devoted to couples and the aff ection they share for each other.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots orga-nization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American flag that has flown over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Donations are gratefully accepted to help deter the costs of supplies and postage. More information can be found at www.StarsFo-rOurTroops.org or contacting [email protected].

Animals TO THE PARISHIONERS of Immaculate Conception Church Glenville: As I’ve been running into parishion-ers over the past two years, I would just like the truth to be known about my sudden ab-sence from the parish. In January 2013, I was called into a meeting. I was asked to resign as Director of Music, when I refused, I was told by your pastor Jerry Gingrass, Maryann Haskel, and Dan Sleeva that I would be termi-nated. I did not quit or move on, I was fired after 20 years of service, without notice or explanation. I truly enjoyed being a part of your lives and serving the community of the Immaculate Conception Church in Glenville. BERNADETTE PETERSEN
PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail). Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Favor granted. L.L.C.

(NAPS)—It’s a cold, hard fact: Icy roads are dangerous for even the most experi-enced driver, and even in dry weather, multicar pileups have closed interstates.
If you’re ever involved in an accident on the highway, take heed of a particular haz-ard: In many cases, people in multiple-vehicle accidents are hurt or even killed after surviving the initial crash largely unscathed. Three things to remember to avoid being among them are:
1. Stay Inside: Stay in your car. According to the Na-tional Highway Traffi c Safety Administration, about 16 percent of pedestrian traffi c deaths occur on freeways. People who get out of their cars are killed and injured far more often than those who stay inside;
2. Stay Belted: Even those who do stay in the car but unbuckle their seat belt are more easily and severely hurt by subsequent cars that pile into them;
3. Stay Calm and Connected: Don’t panic and don’t get into a discussion on the spot with another driver. Do try to signal the other drivers to get off the road to some-where safe where you can exchange information and contact the police.
As one California Highway Patrol offi cer put it, “The best
SURVIVING ACCIDENTS ON MAJOR ROADS
safe practice would be to stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on. If your vehicle is drivable, we always recom-mend get-ting out of the road-way. Bot-tom line: The free-way is a very dan-g e r o u s place for pedestr i-ans to be, and people need to realize that the potential for major injuries or death skyrockets as opposed to being in your car with your seat belt on.”
Added an EMT after a crash,
“Never, never, NEVER get out of your car on a roadway un-less your life is in imminent danger if you do not.
“I can’t s t r e s s h o w d a n -gerous it is to e v e r get out of your car on
a road. You have absolutely no protection if someone plows into you, and if you are stopped, chances are much higher that someone will get hurt than if traffi c were moving normally. Plus, if you are out of your car, busy ex-
changing information with
someone else while stand-
ing in the road, you aren’t
paying 100 percent atten-
tion to what might be com-
ing up behind you, lessening
your chances of getting out
of the way when something
goes wrong.”
