There was a time when religion was considered to be the answer; nowadays it’s part of the problem. If we are to reconnect with our contemporary culture then we will need to pay close attention to the character of the modern spiritual search. So many of the conversations I have on the subject suggest that the Church has little to say on the questions that the majority of people are asking. Disenchantment with institutional religion is not a new phenomenon, although it may take different forms. The perennial questions remain: how can we live in relationship with others? How can we know ourselves? How can we discern our priorities? What does it mean to live in community? How can we live within our limitations? How refreshing therefore to discover a community of people whose authority comes from the authenticity of their lives and not through preaching to others a group so wedded to the experience of God as absolute and uncompromising, yet humorous, humane and not condemning of those whose way of life is different to their own. I am, of course, talking about the desert fathers and mothers whose growth in the Egyptian desert in the fourth century was largely inspired by the life of Anthony of Egypt, who the Church remembers on Tuesday of this week. They weren’t successful by worldly standards, but they had a quality to their lives which touches our hearts and inspires us with the same spirit of generosity and perseverance. Here at St Paul’s Knightsbridge we are committed to seeking God in ways which are shaped by the spirit exemplified by the desert fathers and mothers: rooting our lives in God, meeting the anxiety of our age with deepening trust in the love of God and seeking imaginative ways of responding to the needs of those around us. The lives of the saints shouldn’t just make us think ‘How astonishing!’ but rather ‘There’s a new possibility for my life too!’ Fr Louis Darrant Keeping faith THIS WEEK’S SERVICES: The Weekly Sheet Week beginning Sunday 15 January 2017: The Second Sunday of Epiphany Patronal Festival 25-29 January On Wednesday 25 th January at 7:00pm: Solemn Evensong. If you would like to get involved, please have a word with us, whether you are willing to ‘lend a hand’ or whether you bring specialist or professional skills. We also recognise that many people simply want to come and go as regular worshippers – and so if you don’t want to get involved, that’s fine too!
