Credit where credit due ...

Last Sunday over 80,000 fans packed the Sydney Olympic Stadium and another mi ll ion or so watched on telev ision the NRL Grand Final for the newly named Provan-Summons Trophy.

Previously named the Telstra Cup comprising the image from the famous "Gladiators" photo taken by Ryde photO<.;rapher J ohn O' Gready for The Sydney Morning Hera ld the trophy would not have been possible if not for the photO<,;rapher.

So should the trophy really be called the John O' Gready Trophy giving credit where credit is due?

Of course JB should declare a non-pecuniary interest in this debate.

John O'Gready was a I st Ryde Scout when JB was troop leader and John like Barrie Ward a few months before him followed his troop leader into the press media.

Bar rie also went on to media fame as head photographer at News Limited and covered many Olympic Games as well as service in the RAAF in Vietnam.

Closing Soon Nominations for the 2014 YMCA NSW Youth Parliament are closing soon.

Youth parliament is a fantastic opportunity for young people to have a say in the future of New South Wales and develop skills in leadership, public speaking, debating and team work.

The program offers youth across the state opportunities to meet politicians and other likeminded people to debate a range of topical issues relevant to them at Parliament House, Sydney.

I strongly encourage anyone with an interest in government or politics and a desire to do something positive for the community to get involved.

You can do this by contacting my office on 9808 3288 or at [email protected] on or before Tuesday 15 October 2013.

Amendments Won't Fix Bad Planning Bills

Dear Sir, The NSW Planning Min

ister Brad Hazzard had proposed introducing the Planning Bill into Parliament, however, due to the pressure exerted by the Better Planning Network and others the introduct ion has been delayed.

The Department is attempting to amend this Bill however we believe this Bill is so fundamentally flawed that it should be withdrawn.

If this were the case there would be a tremendous sense of relief for the Northern Suburbs Community which is living under the threat of these imminent dreadful Urban Activation Projects targetted for Epping and North Ryde.

The Northern Suburbs are barely coping with inadequate infrastructure currently without a population blow out.

Better Planning Network's Corinne Fisher says the Network has expressed caution about Minister Hazzard's statement that the Government is prepared to accept some changes to its Planning Bill.

We welcome Minister Hazzard's recognition that things need to change, Corinne Fisher says, but mere tinkering around the edges is not enough to address the significant concerns highlighted by a wide range of stakeholders in submissions on the Planning Bills.

The Minister cannot pretend that Premier O'Farrell's election commitment to return planning powers to the community can be satisfied by asking people to comment on strategic level plans that most of them never even hear about.

Nor can he claim that the divisive strategy of restricting code assessable development to growth corridors is any answer at all. This creates two classes of citizens - those who can have some say about the future look and development of their neighbourhood and the rest who remain at the mercy of the big developers. The BPN cannot support such an unjust and unfair proposition.

We are cautiously optimistic about the apparent commitment to restore some balance in decision making between the economic imperative and environmental and social considerations. However, we have a perlectly good model, using the principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development to drive decisionmaking. This model is widely accepted by most stakeholders who made submissions on the Planning Bills.

We also note that the Minister

made no undertaking to address issues such as Strategic Compatibility Certificates that will allow developers to ride roughshod over Local Environmental Plans, nor did he promise to do anything about the senous concerns expressed by the ICAC that the legislation contains serious corruption risks.

The problem is that the Minister's Planning Bills are just plain bad legislation. The Government should admit this and go back to the drawing board to come up with a sound, balanced and visionary planning system that will serve the State for another thirty years.

Climate alarmism lacks evidence

Dear Sir, In his attempt to discredit

your editoria l on climate change alarmism {TWT 25/9/2013) Mark Newman introduces the all-important matter of evidence.

Your editorial colourfully but correctly debunks the manmade climate disaster theory.

In keeping with the scientific method, this theory should be rejected: firstly because of the lack of confirming evidence and secondly because of the existence of at least six different lines of contradicting evidence, each one enough to disprove the theory.

Mr Newman tries to dismiss Lord Monkton and Alan Jones by sarcastically using of the word "luminary" and then referring to them as "scatterbrained".

Lord Monkton is a highly qualified mathematician with the skills needed to detect misuse of data, as happened, for example, in AI Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth", in the hockey-stick affair, and in the climategate scandal.

New life for Shopping area

Dear Sir, I wish to express my

strong support for the proposed Gladesville Shopping Village development.

The development will revitalise a tired retail precinct and will no doubt meet the strong demand for entry-level housing in the area.

The strong transport links and wide range of services in the immediate area make this an ideal location for increased population density.

If we don't want Sydney to keep sprawling uncontrollably like it is now, then we need to encourage this sort of sensible development in our established suburbs.

Factions fight in Liberal Party

Dear Sir, Well, well, well - and an

other one is about to go through the process of being shut down about the factions in the NSW Liberal Party, the pre-select ion travest ies and farces in several seats at the last Federal election.

Since my seven year suspension and consequent resignation, after more than 40 years of loyal service to the Libs, for the same thing, I really thought we were making headway and were heading for a significantly more democratic process but, as can be seen, Chris Downy and Mark Neeham are fighting to ensure that this isn't so.

It is particularly galling to say this, but the exercise in the democratic method of choosing of the Labour leadership, is making them look more like "us", as "we" look more like them.

The action proposed against John Ruddick is an absolute disgrace and further discredits, dishonours and brings into further disrepute the otherwise fine party which Menzies started.

Neeham and Downy must be very frightened and apprehensive to go this far.

I know I am speaking for all members of the Debell Steering Committee when I say that there is no room for this sort of thing in the Liberal Party - surely we are better than this!!

If any of you are as disgusted and sickened as I am at this turn of events, I urge you to take whatever action you can to register your protest with the Liberal Party in whatever forum you may choose.

If you are suspended for doing so, it will only go to show that the party has left you -you will not have left the party.

Secrets behind Biblical maths

Dear Sir, The Hadassah Code a

new book published this week reveals the secrets behind Biblical mathematics and proves that men and women of different beliefs and cultures live and die by biblical numerics.

Written in a style that is

easy to follow, The Hadassah Code a reference work and a bench mark for all those who seek to find biblical numeric systems working in their personal lives.

It will take readers to a new level of understanding about being subject to time outside our control, independent of gender, race or culture.

Based on fourteen years of research, The Hadassah Code will explain in detail the pre-existing countdown sequences in people's lives concerning items such as birth, marriage, disaster, and death.

In this book you will find the codes of life and death, and it is rny opinion that those who read this book should corne to the conclusion that death is engineered. The sequences of biblical numerics are not limited to the people in my book, so it is my desire that the reader seeks out in their own lives to show that these sequences exists in their generations.

To illustrate how the concept of Biblical Numerics works, I have compiled a list containing hundreds of the world's most famous, and influential people, including Hollywood celebrities, political leaders and royalty.

The results and findings will astound readers, believes and nonbelievers alike.

Taxing the air we breathe

Dear Sir, Ever since life appeared

on Earth, it has been nourished by four natural atmospheric gases - nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour and carbon dioxide.

We breathe these gases every day and carbon dioxide is the plant food that supports all life on earth.

The taxes on carbon dioxide have thus achieved the politicians' dream - taxing the air we breathe and the food we eat.

Don't sell farms to foreigners

Dear Sir, Like many Australians I

am appalled that over a million hectares of farmland -land four t imes the size of the ACT -are being in the hands of a foreign government, especially one with a track record of treating livestock inhumanely.

While I'm not totally opposed to foreign investment, I do believe that under no circumstances should Australian land be owned by a foreign government or company.

Indonesia, and China for that matter, forbids foreign investors and governments from owning land outright and I think Australia should adopt the same policy and I intend on applying as much pressure on Mr Abbott and his government on this issue as I possibly can.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking that Australian land should belong to Australians.

In an effort to galvanise public support for my campaign against foreign ownership I have launched a website - www.wewontsellout. com.au - that will better inform everyday Australians about the already high level of foreign ownership, most notably of agricultural land.

A key aim of the website is to get people to add their name to a list of signatories calling on the Abbott government to stop the sale of Australian land to foreign entities.

The most recent (201 0) ABS figures on foreign ownership are staggering.

Almost a quarter of agricultural land in the Northern Territory is foreign owned, while in Queensland and South Australia it is well above 1 0 per cent.

We would never sell our nation's history or culture, but in effect this is what we are doing.

Toastmasters Club is a loc al friendly and supportive club enabling members to build skills and confidence towards effective self-expression in any situation.

Several years ago I approached a work colleague enquiring about her obtainment of excellent communication ski lls.

At the time I had just been told I would be required to present hour long lectures to a large audience.

I was petrified and concerned that I could easily lose my audience instead of engagement.

This colleague advised I t ry Toastmasters, adding that I should spend a couple of months doing the rounds of different clubs to find one that I feel comfortable attending.

Happy Hunters Hill was the local club close to home. I attended felt comfortable and stayed.

The members were all interested in supporting me to reach my potential.

Within five months I shared first prize at an industry conference for best presentation of a paper. The prize was $500.

I was amazed how much I had learnt in a short time frame. I have yet to be successful in club competitions, but it has been fun competing with one another.

TOASTMASTERS teaches many skills such as learning to deliver prepared speeches, development of impromptu speaking skills and evaluation of speeches effect ively giving feedback in a respectf ul and constructive manner.

Other skills learnt were developing leadership abilities and how to conduct meetings.

I can also thank Happy Hunters Hill Toastmasters for teaching me to listen to understand, a very valuable communication tool.

As part of a leadership program I have mentored three new members through their early speeches.

This has been a very rewarding experience to see our local people develop in confidence.

We are a small club of approximately 20 people and so it is also not as daunting for new members to stand up in front of 15-20 people as it would be in a larger club.

It is also easier to book and deliver your speech

in a t imely way, without being on the waiting list for weeks waiting for a speech place.

• •• THE ANNUAL Hunters

Hill Young in Art Exhibition opens on Wednesday October 16 at 6pm and con-

t inues unt il Sunday October 20 at the Hunters Hill Town Hall.

This exhibition grew out of the annual Hunters Hill Art Exhibition, with children's works originally displayed in the nearby church hall from 1956 to 1985.

As the Exhibition grew over the years so did the popularity of the children's section. Eventually the children 's section out grew the church hall; and so in 1986 local school teacher Ric Hedley worked with all local schools and Council to develop a separate exhibition which has been known as Young In Art up to the present day.

Young In Art is an important and inspirat ional Exhibition of local school children 's artworks.

Each school is responsible for selecting from their student's works and then hanging/displaying them in the Hunters Hill Town Hall. These art works are then judged and awarded prizes.

The importance of inspiring and encouraging creat ivity in young people has always been known with a high calibre of judges taking the time to judge the children's sect ion over the years.

One of the judges of the first Children's Exhibition

in 1956 was Jeffrey Smart , a highly d istinguished painter.

Smart, AO (July 26, 1921 - June 20, 2013) was an expatriate Australian painter known for his precisionist depict ions of urban landscapes.

If you would like to be inspired by the creative freedoms of our youngest artists or amazed by the talents of the High School students then visit Young In Art this October.

Six straight for school debaters

For the first time in the Catholic Schools Debating Association's 50 year history, the Santa Sabina Senior Debating team of Emilia Anderson, Olivia Fehon, Katie Garsia and Anna Power, has won its sixth consecutive title.

This unprecedented achievement has been a fitting end to the careers of these outstanding de baters.

The final, held at Cerdon College Merrylands, saw the team compete against the senior team from OLMC Parramatta.

Arguing the negative side of the challenging conceptual topic "Knowledge is Power". the girls wowed the adjudicator and the audience with their exceptional manner, methodology and breadth of knowledge.

Examples as diverse as the Syrian conflict, the relaxation of economic sanctions against Mugabe's government in Zimbabwe, working conditions in Bangladesh, censorship in China, Nazi Germany and the Vietnam War were presented by the talented debaters.

Joining as a team in Year 7 and not knowing each other very well, the girls have since become best friends.

As well as debating in the CSDA competition and winning every year since Year 7, they have represented the College at the Archdale competition, Association of Heads of Independent Girls Schools (AHIGS) Festival of Speech Debating section and the

Macquarie University Debating Competition, winning the senior division in Year 11.

Elizabeth Phipps, Santa Sabina's Debating Coordinator said "no other team in the Association's history has managed to achieve the outstanding results this Santa Sabina team has - I'm sure we'll see these students competing at the national and international levels when they begin university debating and these skills will be of immense value in their future careers."

Anna Power, speaking on behalf of the girls, explained the benefits of debating.

"I have learnt to think on my feet and to think outside the box," she said.

"I've also become very aware of current affairs and have developed a keen interest in keeping up to date with them."

Anna believes a huge contribution to their success is the fact that "we are such good friends and understand each other so well that preparing a clear case and understanding each other has been easy."

Santa Sabina is extremely proud of the exceptional successes of this debating team and the articulate and well informed young women representing it.

His International Fleet review artwork will feature the seven RAN ships entering the harbour last Friday exactly 100 years to the day after the arrival of the First Australian Fleet in 1913.

Jan has an RAN background joining the Royal Australian Navy at 15 as an apprentice shipright and served for twelve years reaching the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He saw active service aboard HMAS Sydney in Vietnam 1967-68.

He was offered his first solo exhibition in 197 4 when he was still in the Navy.

In 2000 he was invited by the RAN to go to East Timor as an official artist to record the Navy's activities during that operation.

Legendary Australian entertainer Normie Rowe and his Sydney band will perform at North Ryde RSL Community Club on Saturday November 9 at 8pm.

Rowe, Australia's biggest pop star of the sixties, defied the logic of the times.

His period of peak popularity came when the Beatles were dominating the charts around the world.

It was the period of popular music where most established solo singers were suddenly banished from the charts, and young s1ngers were JOin 1ng or forming bands.

And yet, here was this Melbourne teenager creating pop riots and becoming the first Melbourne recording

artist to achieve a national Australia number one.

Since his first record in 1965, Normie has been etching his mark in Australian society both as an entertainer and a committed Australian.

Normie's first foray into national public life started with a recording career that set new standards for the Australian recording industry being the first pop-star to receive a gold record, soon following that with another four.

This cemented his place in Australian recording history. The teenagers of Australia voted him, "The

first King of Popular Music" Normie followed these

recordings with national tours that set audience records in the sixties, filling auditoria normally reserved, at that time, for overseas performers.

His performances were electric. During this time he also crashed the UK with hit singles and on national tours with Gene Pitney and The Troggs.

Upon his return Normie was conscripted into the Australian Army and was sent to Vietnam as a com bat soldier. In 1970 Normie was demobilised and took up his music career, not quite where he left off.

He has since had acting, theatre and musical roles and received the Advance Australia award for services

to Vietnam veterans, the entertainment industry and community.

Normie is still a very dynamic performer playing his cabareVconcert shows across the length and breadth of Australia and bringing his audience of devoted fans to standing ovations wherever he performs.

Rowe's greatest hits include Shakin All Over, It's Not Easy, It Aint Necessarily So, Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be); The Stones That I Throw; Sunshine Secret; Pride and Joy; I Just Don't Understand; Ooh La La; Penelope and Going Home.

Tickets for the 8pm show are $30. Inquiries 9888-7588.

Passengers waiting to catch a bus from Drummoyne to Gladesville will get new sheltered bus stops.

The City of Canada Bay is currently auditing bus stops from Drummoyne to Rhodes with the aim of building the sheltered stops which will also have bus timetables.

Jacara Apartments Impress The Putney Hill Sales Centre

Since launching in mid-July, the latest release of off-the-plan residences at Putney Hill, Jacara Apartments, has caused a sensation among first home buyers. More than half of Jacara's two and three-bedroom apartments are now sold, with a significant number of purchasers choosing to make Putney Hill their first home. Featuring an extensive private rooftop garden for residents to use for dining, recreation and relaxation - consisting of communal garden beds, veggie patch, barbecue and entertaining facilities, and putting green - it's not hard to understand why Jacara is such a hit with homebuyers.

Recent reports show Australian backyards are shrinking, yet leading property planners such as Frasers Property Australia are bucking the trend by offering open green spaces to city dwellers.

landscape designer to offer spacious outdoor settings to residents of the new master planned Putney Hill community, on the border of Putney and Ryde.

As backyards shrink in major cities across the country, Turf Australia, the industry body representing Australian turf growers is calling on other property planners to follow Frasers' example and to realise the wider benefits of green living.

The Putney Hill collection of premium houses and apartments due for completion in 2014 are 80 per cent sold.

The plans for rolling greens, lush gardens and bushland parks are a major drawcard for the young famil ies and professionals buying homes there.

Urban and landscape designers, Environmen t al Partnership, has

worked with Frasers to lay the development with more than 12,000 square metres of Sir Walter Buffalo lawn across the Lardelli Park, Hill Top Green, Figtree Park and Palmera Park spaces.

Tony Hall, Urban Research Professor for Griffith University, who undertook a study into shrinking backyards, says backyards are more than just a lifestyle

option and actually carry an importance far beyond the individual household. "Vegetat i o n

surrounding the dwelling plays an important role in microclimate, storm drainage and biodiversity, having serious ecological implications," says Hall.

According to Griffith University, the average backyard is now around 100 square metres smaller than the average 20 years ago.

A property's dwelling now covers most of the land, leaving little space for a backyard which would balance the environmental impact of

modern development.

Furthermore, research conducted by Turf Australia found that a lawn can add a significant amount of value to the home. The survey, which polled real estate agents nationally, found that Aussie home buyers are prepared to pay up to $75,668 more for a lawn.

"Not only does natural lawn increase property value, it supports the environment by improving air quality, preventing soil erosion and cooling air temperatures. A healthy lawn area of a fairly small yard will provide enough oxygen for one adult for an entire day," says

Turf Australia president, John Keleher.

"A natural, turfed lawn absorbs one tonne of carbon per acre, per year; acting as a 'sink' to capture carbon dioxide in the soil," Keleher continues.

Keleher advises property planners to consider the social and environmental importance of a natural lawn.

"Surrounding houses and apartments with natural turf increases property value and aesthetic appeal but it also ensures you're doing your bit towards environmental sustainability," says Keleher.

• And, with outdoor living areas becoming smaller, it's more important than ever to utilise the space we have and to reap the benefits of green living, no matter how small it may be,· Keleher says.

"Even urban dwellings can adapt outdoor areas using turf and natural materials in plant boxes, skirting or even vertical gardens which are becoming increasingly popular," he adds.

AS f igure skater Chantelle Kerry aims at selection for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she does so w ith the support of her family behind her all t he way. The young Carlingford

skater is coached by her mother, Monica MacDonald herself a figure skating Olympian from the 1988 Calgary Games, where she competed in ice dancing alongside Rodney Clarke.

Kerry is one of six ladies vying to make the Australian Team for the 2014 Olympics a dream she has had since first putting on skates at just 18 months of age.

"To compete at the Olympic Games would be the best experience of my life," 17 -year-old Kerry said.

"To be able to reach the goal that all the hard work, great times, and tough times went into would be an indescribable feeling.

"To add on top of all that, I would be sharing the experience with my mum who not only lived it in her own career, but also has been the biggest influence and help in my own, would just make it that much better."

Kerry has had her mum by her side every step of the way through her figure skating career - the pinnacle of which

she reached in 2012 when she competed at the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games in lnnsbruck, Austria.

Kerry was the sole figure skater on the Australian team and finished a commendable 1Oth p lace in the individual ladies program.

Since lnnsbruck, she has developed two new routines, stepped up to compete in senior tournaments and has also been working hard to improve the technical scores in both her short and free programs.

"Originally I just had the one new routine," Kerry explained, "but after more consideration we decided to go ahead and create two new ones. Our main focus has been working towards more consistency on my jump elements and increasing the speed of my spins."

In Kerry 's short program she has chosen a piece of music more mature than her previous pieces, indicative of her bid to become a more mature performer.

"That in itself comes with its challenges, • she said. " I have definitely

Chantelle is one of Australia's senior ladies competitors who will skate at the Australian Figure Skat ing Championships at Melbourne's Medibank Icehouse in December.

" It will definitely be tough for all the competitors -not only physically but mentally as well," she said of the event which w ill be Australia's last chance to qualify a spot for Soc hi.

"If I am selected to head to Germany, it will take clean programs to secure an Olympic quota place. I think that a huge part of securing the place though is mental toughness.

"In past years at events like this, people have seen that it's the athletes who can mentally handle the pressure are the ones who make it. This has been a big focus in my training this season."

Brother Brendan w ill also be lining up in the Men's Senior division with his sights also set on an Olympic berth.

HOLY Cross Crusaders Cricket Club are gearing up for another competitive summer in the Inner West Harbour and Northern District Junior Cricket Association competitions.

There are limited spaces available in the Club's 2013-14 junior teams.

Join the Under 8s for $1 (includes a free shirt and cap) while the fun and popular ln2Cricket program for 5 to 7 year olds will again run on Friday afternoons during Term 4 from 5pm to 6pm.

At the annual presentation held at Club Ryde X earlier this year the inaugural 'Crusaders XII' was announced. The Crusaders XII were the allround top 12 players from all Holy Cross junior teams for the 2012-2013 season.

to talented prospect Connor Sheehan from the U/16s.

season with the ball taking 15 wickets at 12.2 but still averaged 25.8 with the bat. Captain of his team, he showed true Club spirit by filling in for a game each in the U/ 15s and A Grade.

limited opportunities, high score of 41 not out; Conor Gough

(U/11) -great team player, a consistent run scorer and bowler all season with high score of 28 not out); Patrick Gough (U/15) -claimed the highest individual score for junior teams in the Club with 68 and led the way for his team with wickets and catches; Damien Granet (U/1 0) -high score of 22 not out and best bowling figures of 3-10;

Trampoline champ Chloe earns award

By CHRIS KARAS NATIONAL trampolining representative Chloe Stride is the fourth

monthly winner of a 2013-14 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Month award.

The gifted 15 year old Ryde RSL Youth Club junior - who is preparing for next month's World Age Trampolining Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria -will receive her $300 award at a presentation this Friday at North Ryde Golf Club at 6pm.

Chloe qualified for the Australian team after outstanding performances at this year's National Trampolining Championships in Sydney.

She combined with Leanne Van Rensburg to clinch the national title for the Senior Women's Synchronised Trampoline team; finished runner up in the U/17 Trampoline and third in the Junior Elite Trampoline division.

It followed her title victories in the NSW State Age

U/17 Trampoline and Double Mini Trampoline finals at the State Championships earlier this year.

Chloe was a promising gymnast with the Honda Academy at Hornsby in her formative years before sustaining a serious knee injury.

She turned to trampolining at the age of 13 and has blossomed into one of the country 's brightest prospects under the expert tutelage of Ryde RSL mentors Christine Flew and Dan ielle Ayrton.

The Year 10 St lves High School student is gearing up for the World Age championships where she'll attempt a difficult element as part of her routine to impress the international judges.

Chloe is set to perform a

rudi-out element with her Australian team mate Jayden Cooney and is confident of a strong showing following months of intensive training.

The element, which has a high degree of difficulty, features a double front somersault with a 540-degree twist.

Having honed her trampolining skills under coaches Flew and Ayrton, Chloe believes she can execute the rudi-out when the championships get underway next month.

The exciting Ryde RSL prospect will also contest the individual trampoline event in Sofia.

"I just want to do my best at World Age as this is my first major competition and hopefully qualify for the finals," said Chloe.
