The Pilbara region is an area of distinctive climate, geology, land forms, soils, vegetation and biota. It is also rich in iron ore and gas and oil reserves. Jones (200421) provide an introduction to the archipelago, its climate, geology and land form and the marine environments that surround it, as well as the history of its earliest occupation, discovery by western explorers and the modern economic forces that are driving its development. Reviews of the Dampier marine environment and its oceanography have also been provided by Wells and Walker (2003) and Pearce et al. (2003), respectively. Between 1998 and 200!, the Western Australian Museum/Woodside Energy Ltd Partnership conducted a marine biological survey of the Dampier Archipelago. The survey involved two diving expeditions (1988 and 1999), a dredging expedition (1999), a marine biological workshop (2000) and miscellaneous field work in the archipelago, the Burrup Peninsula and on adjacent continental shores. The diving expeditions mapped and recorded the marine habitats of the entire Archipelago and extensive information and material was collected regarding the marine fauna and flora of the region. The dredging and trawling expedition documented the benthic marine invertebrate biodiversity of northwestern Australia, to compare with that of other areas of Australia. Studies on the marine invertebrates in the mangroves on the Burrup Peninsula and adjacent continental shores provided an opportunity to undertake seasonal studies on the functioning of invertebrates In these svstems. The first international marine biological workshop in northwestern Australia was held in Dampier in July and August 2000, where marine scientists pursued individual research projects on a variety of taxa. 'fhe WA Museum/Woodside Energy Ltd partnership (1998-2002) represents the first sampling expeditions to the Dampier Archipelago within the framework of a comprehensive project aimed at studying the biodiversity of the area. Prior to this partnership, the Dampier Archipelago had been the subject of various studies (see Jones 2(0421) but no comprehensive study of its marine invertebrates, fishes and marine algae had been attempted. INTRODUCTION

The Dampier Archipelago is one of the majorphysical features of the Pilbara coast ofnorthwestern Australia. It lies between latitudes200 20'S-20045'S and longitudes 116°24'S-117°05' Eand is situated at the eastern end of an extensivechain of small coastal islands between Exmouth andDampier (Figures 1 and 2). The Pilbara region is anarea of distinctive climate, geology, land forms,soils, vegetation and biota. It is also rich in iron oreand gas and oil reserves. Jones (200421) provide anintroduction to the archipelago, its climate, geologyand land form and the marine environments thatsurround it, as well as the history of its earliestoccupation, discovery by western explorers and themodern economic forces that are driving itsdevelopment. Reviews of the Dampier marineenvironment and its oceanography have also beenprovided by Wells and Walker (2003) and Pearce etal. (2003), respectively.

During the diving and dredging expeditions andmangrove fieldwork, scientists collected marinealgae, sponges, scleractinian corals, crustaceans,molluscs, echinoderms, minor marine invertebratesand fishes. These results are published in the reportof the diving and dredging expeditions (lones,2004b) - marine algae (IIuisman, 2(04), sponges(Fromont, 2(04), scleractinian corals (Criffith, 2(04),crustaceans (Hewitt, 2004; Jones, 2004c; Peart, 2(04),molluscs (Slack-Smith and Bryce, 2004; Taylor andClover, 2(04), echinoderms (Marsh and Morrison,20(4), minor marine invertebrates (Salotti et al.,2(04) and fishes (Hutchins, 2(04).

fhe short, specific, ecological and taxonomicstudies were reported in the two Workshopvolumes (Wells et al., 2003a; 2003b) and includedecological studies on the Mollusca (Britton andMorton, 2003; Clover et al., 2003a; Hickman, 2003;Kohn, 2003a, b; McMahon, 2003; Morton andBritten, 2003; Tan, 2003; Taylor and Clover, 2003;Wells and Lalli, 2003a; Wilson, 20(3) andEchinodermata (Wells and Lalli, 2003b). Taxonomicstudies included marine benthic flora (Huismanand Borowitzka, 2(03), oligochaete worms (Erseusand Wang, 2003; Rota et al., 20(3), polychaeteworms (Hutchings and Avery, 20(3), sponges(Fromont, 2(03), molluscs (Brearley et al., 2003;Fahey and Valdes, 2003; Clover et al., 2003b; Seapyet al., 2003; Wilson 2(03); barnacles (lones, 20(3),Acari (Bartsch, 2003a, b c; Smit, 2(03), infaunalinvertebrates (Kohn, 2003c); and fishes (Hutchins,20(3).

Through its wide international scientific networks,the Western Australian Museum involved 85scientists from 25 countries, five Australian and 14international museums, seven Australian and 35international universities and research institutions,and film and documentary makers in the project,along with the nine WA Museum scientists and stafffrom Woodside's environmental team. Othersecondary partners included 19 local and Australiancompanies, 16 Australian government agencies, andother resource companies and local stakeholders inthe area, including the two High Schools. During thecourse of the project, we were also able to providecareer advancement training opportunities for 17young people.

RESULTS

Since 1998, this partnership has investigated anddocumented the marine biodiversity of the DampierArchipelago, leading to the development of TheWoodside Collection. "rhe material has significantlyincreased the numbers of marine invertebrate andfish specimens collected from the area (Figure 3).

fIoused in perpetuity at the Western AustralianMuseum, it contains more than 4,600 species, allfully identified by Australian and internationalexperts. At the time of publication of the presentvolume, 268 new species have been described andmany new species are currently being or still yet tobe described. Additionally, 26 species are recordedfrom Australia for the first time, 116 from WesternAustralia for the first time, and 411 from theDampier Archipelago for the first time.

The Woodside Collection represents a unique,perpetual reference to the biodiversity of the watersof northwestern Australia. In addition, it representsa key regional biodiversity repository in a globalcontext, containing a wealth of information relevantto the whole of the vast tropical Indo-Pacific region(from the eastern coast of Africa, across the Indianand Pacific Oceans to Hawaii), thus making it amajor data source for the shallow water biota ofthis region. This information, plus associatedscientific and CIS spatial data and photographicimages, is also available and accessible as auniversal, public reference, on-line facility throughthe development of the interactive, educationalWoodside CoIIectioll Website(www.museum.wa.gov.au/dampier). Informationhas also been made widely available to schools andthe general public through other media; twopermanent exhibitions; an educational video, OurBackyard, produced with the Western AustralianDepartment of Education, the Curriculum Counciland the two High Schools in the region; and theinternational television documentary, Life on theEdge Down Under.

The Woodside Collection is already beingacknowledged as a unique resource, not only for itsenormous diversity and high quality expertidentification, but also for the knowledge that it isgenerating and communicating. It is providingunique information on the biodiversity of theDampier Archipelago that is facilitating soundenvironmental management to maintain andconserve the marine resources of the region forfuture generations, as well as developing strategiesto minimize the environmental impact ofhydrocarbon exploration and production activities.Results of the partnership's research havesubstantially modified the map previously used todesignate the marine habitats of the DampierArchipelago and data generated through thepartnership have been made available togovernment, industry, environmental, conservationand fisheries managers in Western Australia. 7]1('

in the Dampier Archipelago. The WoodsideCoJ1ection will continue to provide benefits togovernment, industry and the scientific and generalcommunity for the long term.

The achievements of the Western AustralianMuseum/Woodside Energy Ltd partnership havebeen recognized through a number of awards; in2001, the WA Golden Gecko Award forEnvironmental Excellence; in 2003, the prestigiousCity of Sydney Open Award, Australian BusinessArts Partnership Awards; and, most recently in2007, as winner of the state final of the PrimeMinister's Award.

Crustacean ReportThe present volume represents the fourth and

final report of the series associated with the work ofthe WA Museum/Woodside Energy Ltd partnershipin the waters of the Dampier Archipelago. Itspecifically documents crustacean groups collectedduring the partnership that were sent to specialistsfor specific expert identification.

The methodology adopted and data for divingexpeditions (DAl/1998 and DA3/1999), theWorkshop diving expedition (DA4/2000, selectedstation only included) and the dredging expedition(DA2/1999) were previously published in the

expeditions' report (Jones, 2004b). These arepresented at the beginning of the present report forease of reference (Methodology, and Tables 1, 2 and3, respectively). It should be noted that a completedata set for the Workshop diving expedition (DA4/2000) and minor data corrections in Table 1 (DAl/1998 and DA3/l999) are included in the presentreport. Additionally, for completeness, station listsfor miscellaneous fieldwork sites in the DampierArchipelago are also presented in the presentvolume (Tables 4 and 5).

In the expeditions' report (Jones, 2004b),crustaceans collected during the diving anddredging expeditions were listed by Hewitt (2004),with Cirripedia and Amphipoda reportedseparately in that volume (Peart, 2004 and Jones,2004c, respectively). Together with the presentcontributions, these reports present acomprehensive review of the crustaceans occurringin the waters and on the shores of the DampierArchipelago and the adjacent continental coastline.
