Self-Care Tips for the Flu

Source: UNH Health Services

Limit Your Exposure to Others

If you already have the flu, please stay home until you are feeling better.

Remain home until 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medications).

If you are unable to stay home, please remain in your apartment, etc. You

should not go to classes, work, dining halls or participate in social activities. Take Care of Yourself

Get plenty of sleep and rest. When you're awake drink one 8 oz. of clear

fluids each hour.

Eat well and ask your friends or family to help you get meals so you that you can rest.

Consider taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help lower a fever and re-

duce headaches and body aches.

If you have a cough, consider taking medication with an expectorant and

cough suppressant. You can also use cough drops for symptom relief.

The flu virus cannot be treated with antibiotics. Also, antiviral medication is usually not recommended. You should seek immediate medical care if you have any of the following: Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath; pain or pressure in chest or abdo-men; recurring dizziness; confusion; severe or persistent vomiting; flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever or worse cough.

If you have a chronic health condition and are experiencing influenza-like illness, or, if symptoms worsen, please call (603) 862-2856 when Health Services is open or call (603) 862-WELL when Health Services is closed (after-hours). Also, feel free to call Health Services if you have any questions.

Don’t let this

happen to you!

It’s happened before... windows left slightly cracked open when it was freez-ing out, pipes breaking, thousands of dollars in damage billing—not a good sit-uation. Don’t let it happen to you! Please keep your windows closed during cold weather, especially if you are leav-ing for an extended period.

At this point in the year your heat should be working normally. If your apartment is too hot or too cold no matter how you adjust your thermostat please call UNH Facilities at 603-862-1437. Too Hot = Wasted energy Too Cold = Unpleasant, & potentially a sign of a larger problem

Winter Park-

ing Ban Info

The Winter Parking Ban (WPB) begins at midnight on December 1st and runs until April 1. Every night during this peri-od, regardless of weather conditions, most campus parking areas and spaces are off limits to parking from mid-night to 6a.m. Parking is limited to “exempt” areas only. Campus residents with valid parking permits are okay to park in their assigned lots. It is essential that cam-pus residents correctly advise their guests about the WPB and where it’s safe to park. For a complete description of the options and restrictions, please visit www.unh.edu/
