She just received an e-mail from a former student who now lived in Washington DC and who was working for military intelligence as a Russian interpreter. He stated that the only year he spent in her class had inspired him to know that he wanted to learn other languages as his life’s work. He stated that while sitting at his desk he just realized, but for the inspiration in her class, he would probably still be a rudderless youth in Orange County, attending community college. I told her it was the greatest reward she could ever expect from her job. VARIED SUBJECT MATTER Today’s program was an interesting mix. Our speaker, Keri Anderson was from the district speaking on the perineal subject of membership. Keri is from the Claremont club, and has a bit of experience in membership and how to stimulate members to think in terms of getting new members. The meeting started on an uplifting note with Rev. Luff Johnson delivering one of his well prepared invocations. After announcements it proceeded to Keith Hilliard producing an hilarious fining session that involved Gene Morrill helping Keith bust up a console TV set on the back steps of their home. Gordie praised President Joe on his masterful management job at a recent community gathering where all of San Gabriel Valley showed up. Librarian Janet Stone proudly announced the completion of the new carpeting in our splendid library, and the meeting collected $288 for the Shepherds Pantry.

LIGHT UP ROTARY

! ! ! ! ! BREAD CAST UPON THE WATERS !Our Daughter Vicki has been teaching in the language department of Orange Lutheran High School for a number of years.

! ! ! ! ! VARIED SUBJECT MATTERToday’s program was an interesting mix.

The Argentinean author, Jorge Luis Borges went blind shortly after he was installed as librarian in Bueno Aires. He is reported to have stated:

"I speak of God's splendid irony in granting me at once 800,000 books and

darkness.”

A ROTARY MOMENT How the districts came to be:The district system came about in the early days of Rotary, when in 1914, a San Francisco Rotarian N a m e d H . J . B r u n i e r, h a d exper ienced the process of traveling from one club to another, and suggested grouping them according to the railroad routes that connected the nation at that time. The process was adopted at the 1915 convention, putting in place a system that has served RI well over the years, in spite of all of the the transportation changes that have happened since then. Your editor found this information at a very interesting website named RGHF, which stands for Rotary Global History Fellowship.

Past President Gary Boyer got involved with the fining session today offering to pay the fine in place of Tony Sayegh because Gary had missed his dental appointment with Tony. It sounds suspiciously like a clear case of selective memory.

"IN GOD WE TRUST" is on this currency. The Latin above the pyramid, ANNUIT COEPTIS, means, "God has favored our undertaking." The Latin below the p y r a m i d , N O V U S O R D O SECLORUM, means, "a new order has begun." At the base of the pyramid is the Roman Numeral for 1776.

If you look at the right-hand circle, and check it carefully, you will learn that it is on every National Cemetery in the United States. It is also on the Parade of Flags Walkway at the Bushnell, Florida, National Cemetery, and is the centerpiece of most hero's monuments. Slightly modified, it is the seal of the President of the United States, and it is always visible whenever he speaks, yet very few people know what the symbols mean.

The Bald Eagle was selected as a symbol for victory for two reasons:

To be cont’d. TRF Committee chair, Craig

Henderson handed out a couple of Paul harris Fellowships today, to Jim Nakano and to Gordie Norman. Multiple in both cases I believe. Craig deserves commendation and a lot of credit for taking hold of the Foundation Program left vacant by the recent passing of both Ed Hupp and Lani Exton, which duo had kept a strong presence going for the club for many years. Craig addressed it as the important job it was and proceeded to create his own style of the opperation.

! ! ! ! ! THE PRESIDENT’S SIGNATUREIn past years when the RI President was from one of the oriental countries your editor does not recall him signing his name in his language characters, along with his name in English, as our current president, Gary Huang of Taiwan did in his monthly column in our Rotrarian Magazine this issue. Actually, those characters are what the name is, and has been all his life. When he grew up and began interacting with members of other nations, he accommodated with a version in English that came close to expressing the sound of his name. We English speakers smugly assume it to be the world’s language because our ancestors imposed it upon the world of commerce which they were ruling at that time. Everything we can do to respect and minimize these differences will help.

Somehow Pat Janes got involved with holding George McGill’s winning ticket in today’s opportunity drawing, escorting George up to the front and helping him draw the wrong ace out of the deck.
