PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As many of you have noticed and asked about,

the archives are still missing from the AWC website. In light of what has happened with the archive material, the AWC Board has hired a lawyer who specializes in copyright law to look into who owns the material that was produced from AWC documents that was scanned and posted on the website by a volunteer doing work in support of a club effort. We felt that this situation should be straightened out legally and in the process we are finding out how to ensure that any future pub-lished material put out under the auspices of the AWC will have copyright that is held by the club and not any individual member of the club.

The complaint regarding the Board of Directors ballot counting at the National that was filed with the AKC will most likely go before the AKC Board at their July meeting. I use the phrase “most likely” because that is the way it was presented to me. I am guessing that means that if their Board meeting runs long or if other matters come before them that they consider more pressing then the complaint will be bumped to August or later. Unfortunately, as I previously men-tioned while this action is still pending there is no work being done on the proposed changes to the By-Laws. I asked Michael Liosis in Club Relations the following: “What is the likely outcome of something like this [the AKC Board action]? Will the AWC be fined? Will we possibly have to have a new election? Will the AWC Board all have to give up their first born children? (I can’t speak for the others on the Board but I sincerely hope the latter isn’t the case – I’ll be 59 in August and don’t have a first born child so at this point in my life I hope the AKC Board won’t expect me to father one just to give it to them.)” His response was that per-haps the outcome would be a one-way trip to a U.S. military base in Cuba. Obviously, he was kidding. He was kidding, right?

On a much more pleasant topic, I would like to welcome Leila Anichi, Lauri Austin, Diane Fast, Joseph Mendelsen, and Sarah Kylr Sibinovic as the newest members of the AWC.

Have fun with your four-legged children. Take care and be safe. Russell

To The Editor,

The AWC archival materials, including the AWC Whippet News Annuals and the AWC Whippet Newsletters, which are still missing from the AWC website and apparently still in limbo because they had been removed to David Howton's personal website, where he claims on his front page that the content therein “is a result of the creative effort of the site's owner” (something you had to attest to before you could view these materials).

As a result of this mess, I have a few words to say about “volunteerism” and “creative ownership”, particularly relative to the AWC Whippet News Annual, because I can speak for it directly, although what I say also applies equally to the AWC Whippet News (for more years than I even know produced by the efforts of Pat Dresser and Christine Hopperstad).

Apparently, because Mr Howton had devoted considerable time to scanning back issues of the Whippet News Annuals for the AWC, he decided to consider them his own “creations.” When he had a falling out with the BOD, he removed these files (along with all the archives) from the AWC website and placed them exclusively on his own. Please note that Mr Howton VOLUNTEERED to scan the content of the AWC Whippet News Annuals and place them on AWC WEBSITE. Yes, it took many hours to do so, just as did his VOLUNTEERING to maintain that website for the AWC, but he is not the only person who VOLUNTEERS many hours of his/her time in service to the AWC, often with little or no recognition of one’s efforts. If he feels unappreciated for his time and effort, he can join with many others who probably feel the same. Get over it. Do the job, or give up the job. Don’t sulk.

Doing a little scanning hardly gave Mr Howton “creative ownership” of the AMERICAN WHIPPET CLUB Whippet News Annuals. He did not “create” any AWC Whippet News Annuals. I have put MY heart and soul and many THOUSANDS of hours into actually PRODUCING these books for the last THIRTY-THREE YEARS. If any person were to claim “creative ownership” of these books, it would certainly be ME, and NOT Mr Howton. In MY opinion (the person who actually produced, edited, created the artwork, organized the printing, and did the mailing of the Whippet News Annuals for the last 33 years!) the American Whippet Club Whippet News Annuals belong to the AWC and nobody else. I VOLUNTEERED to do this work on behalf of the American Whippet Club. The Annuals are MY contribution to the AWC and the Whippet Fancy and I do so with pleasure.

Just as Pat Dresser created the AWC Whippet News for dozens of years. Just as Christine Hopperstad has also done. Just as so many uncounted numbers of VOLUNTEERS perform uncounted, often unrecognized, tasks daily on behalf of the AWC, so that we may enjoy our Club and our breed a bit more.

None of them tried to take their “creations” and leave.

Sincerely,

Wendy Clark American Whippet Club WHIPPET NEWS ANNUAL Editor, Art Director, Graphic Designer, Publisher, Mailing Service

American Whippet Club Annual Membership Meeting

April 7, 2011 The annual meeting of the American Whippet Club was called to order by President Russell McFadden at 7:45 am on April 7, 2011 in the main ballroom at the Marriott Griffin Gate Resort in Lexington, Kentucky. 117 members signed in and established a quorum. Jackie Hubble made a motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes from the last annual membership meeting and that they be approved as published. This was seconded by Red Tatro and it passed. Prior to beginning the business of the club, the Cardiologists for the Whippet Health Foundation asked to speak. Dr.’s Rebecca Stepien and Virginia Fuentes took a few min-utes to bring the membership up to speed on the current status of the Whippet cardiac study and their recommenda-tions for heart testing. They will be publishing a paper on nor-mal Whippet values within the next year or so based on the information they have gotten from echocardiograms done on Whippets at our nationals and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where Dr. Stepien and Dr. Heidi Kellihan are on staff. They recommended having echocardiograms done for pre-breeding screening, stating auscultation alone is not enough and several lesions have been found on Whippets with no murmurs. They also recommended screening young dogs (as well as middle-aged to older) as several Whippets in the study have been normal one year and significantly affected the next year at young ages (i.e., a normal Whippet heart at 3 years may not be normal at 4). A motion was made and seconded to suspend normal busi-ness to discuss infractions by the Board of Directors. Motion passed. Joe Light asked to be recognized and allowed to speak from the floor regarding alleged infractions of the By-Laws and the election process by the AWC Board of Directors. Peg Rideout read a petition (see attached) and Russell re-quested a copy to be able to respond. In response to the letter to AKC of alleged By-Laws viola-tions read to the membership and the Board, Russell stated that he could answer to the points made and asked to see a copy of the letter just presented so that he could do so. He stated:

#1 In following the procedure that had been established a few years earlier and used every year since, the counting of the major number of ballots had been done prior to the an-nual meeting. This was done because it took anywhere from three to five hours to count the ballots depending on the num-ber returned so it was therefore impossible for the ballots to actually be counted during the time frame allowed for the an-nual meeting unless everyone wanted to sit around for hours while the counting was done. The Board had approved the people who had volunteered to be tellers this year and the major number of ballots was counted on Tuesday. However, any ballots handed to the Secretary after that but prior to the

annual meeting would have been turned in to the Tellers for inclusion in the final count. #2 This year a mailing service was used to send out the ballots. The envelopes were turned in to them Febru-ary 24th with the guarantee from the service that they would be in the mail on or before March 1st. Cindy stated that she has the receipts from the mailing service in Colorado Springs that support this. If the ballots were not mailed by the March 1st deadline defined in the By-Laws then responsibility for this was with the mailing service – not the Secretary. Cindy had defined the March 1st date when she handed the service the envelopes but had no control over whether that deadline was met once they were no longer in her possession. #3 The results of the election were not announced prior to the meeting. Since all of the prospective Board members had been asked to attend the Wednesday morning Board meeting, the people on the ballot were told of the preliminary results so that they could choose to attend or not. The preliminary results would have been unlikely to change unless a large number of ballots all voting for one individual were handed to the Secretary between the counting of the ballots on Tuesday and the official announcement of the results at the annual meet-ing. This was unlikely since only one or two ballots are typically delivered by hand so letting the prospective Board members know the results ahead of time is done as a courtesy. The fact that the preliminary results were made public did not change the fact that the official an-nouncement of the results would come at the end of the annual meeting as specified in the By-Laws. #4 The Whippet News was used as the method of noti-fication for the nominees on the Board ballot. Since this was not put up on the website until January 24th, the notification to the membership was nine days late. We have used The Whippet News as the method of notifica-tion for the Board nominees because it is mailed to all members and using it saves the club the cost of an extra mailing sent through the US Post Office. Next year we will make sure the membership is notified by the January 15th date even if it requires this extra cost of going through the post office. Much discussion took place. Fred Lutz asked to be rec-ognized and stated that he thought the Board was doing a good job and he motioned to close the discussion and move on with normal business. Jeff Kimmelman sec-onded. Motion failed. More discussion followed regarding the possible re-count of ballots. Scot Northern motioned to recount the ballots, Mallory Ballard seconded. Motion failed. Red Tatro, who was one of the tellers stood and ex-plained the ballot counting process. After the ballots are opened and verified against the January 1, 2011 mem-bership list, those envelopes are destroyed. Therefore a recount could be done but not verified. More discussion was held. Donna Richards made a motion that the ballots be accepted as counted on Tues-day. Jackie Hubble seconded, motion passed. There were 5 nays.

Jackie also moved to return to normal flow of business, Fred Lutz seconded, motion passed. President’s Report Russell introduced the newly elected Board members Treasurer's Report Treasurer David Samuelson reported a balance of $55,996.51 as of December 31, 2010. Copies of his complete report were made available to the members present. David stated we now are required to file annually with the IRS and he has worked with an accountant to file the return. David commended the board for their fiscal re-sponsibility and their hard work to keep to club financially strong. Secretary's Report Cindy had a report from Kathy Slater, Futurity Chair that will be published in Whippet News in May. Committee Reports

National Show Chair Cindy Scott reported that the 2012 National will be held at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, Ohio starting April 14 2012 with Judy Lowther as the local chair. The 2013 National will be held at the Valley River Inn (same place as 2008) in Eugene, Oregon starting April 20, 2013. Balloting for the judge for that National will go out this summer. Whippet News No report AKC Delegate No Report Performance Director Lisa will give her report in the May Whippet News which will include the ASFA delegate’s report Whippet News Annual The 2010 Annual is not yet at the printer, partly be-cause the National is about 3 weeks earlier this year, and mostly because we are kept waiting by other clubs and organizations who take forever to complete their end of year statistics. It is should be about the same size as last year's book was. I want to thank all of the people who help to make the Annual a success, particularly Jill Baum for the AWC Spe-cialty results, Lisa Costello for her fabulous Performance Report, Donna Lynch for her help with the Pedigree Sec-tion, Barbara Parsons for the Top Producers, Lois Obelcz for proof reading and Bo Bengtson for his AWC Archives article. ROM Chair Gail Boyd will announce and give out certificates at the banquet. Whippet Health Mary Beth Arthur, Dr. Rebecca Stepien and Dr. Virginia Fuentes spoke to the membership regarding the cardiac study, the WHF pre-breeding health screening recom-mendations, the WHF funded thyroid study and CHIC

blood samples. Drs. Stepien and Fuentes answered ques-tions regarding the cardiac study. WRAP Dr. Barbara Henderson thanked everyone for their support of WRAP. She reported that we had lost a very valuable and big supporter of WRAP when Dr. Tom Sooy passed away in October of 2010. Tom provided his knowledge and surgical expertise to all rescues free of charge. She asked that peo-ple take a moment and see the tribute to Dr. Tom on the Rainbow Bridge table. In 2010 we had 198 rescues this was an increase from the 72 rescues in 2009. 101 females and 97 males. The rescues varied in ages. There were 24 under one year and 28 ten years and older. The rest were between one and 10 years. Eight states had a high number of rescues. Illinois had 21, Oregon and Texas 19, California 14, Georgia & Louisiana 11, Michigan & New York 10. Thirty one states saw rescues in 2010. The rescues came from foreclosures, shelters, breeders that could not be lo-cated. We always try to locate the breeder of a rescue be-fore trying to place the dog. If the breeder is unable to take the Whippet back we will place the dog in a home and would appreciate a donation from the breeder. Our major expense was Veterinary fees. JUDGES EDUCATION Mary Dukes cannot be present for the hands on portion of judges education but she has appointed a committee to present it.

WRAP Report - June 2011

Brigitte Greenberg November 3, 1967 - June 15, 2011

A wave of deep sorrow has washed over the world of Whippets with the loss of our dear and de-voted friend — tireless WRAP volunteer, Whippet ad-vocate and Ace Reporter, Brigitte Greenberg. Brigitte developed serious medical complications after eso-phageal surgery due to cancer on May 23rd and was hospitalized in the ICU due to respiratory decline fol-lowing the surgery. On June 5th, Brigitte was moved to Washington Hospital Center and connected to a bedside ECMO machine for respiratory failure. On June 13th, Brigitte suffered a serious medical set-back, never to recover. She passed away on June 15th at 1:30 pm EST. Brigitte was 43 years young. The 111 WRAP volunteers are sending our thoughts, prayers & blessings for continued comfort and strength to her mother, Beverly, immediate fam-ily and Whippets: Bambi, Rudy, Daisy, Summer, Corey and Pony during this time of bereavement. Brigitte will be remembered for her enormous contri-butions to WRAP, the Whippet world and love of the breed. Brigitte's service was held on Sunday, 6/26/11 at 12:30 PM at the Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home in Silver Spring, Maryland. Burial followed at Judean Gardens Memorial Cemetery, in Olney, Maryland. In honor of Brigitte’s commitment to Whippet Rescue, her family has requested in lieu of flowers,

donations be sent to WRAP at the following ad-dress: Whippet Rescue and Placement, Inc. c/o Jean Schroeder, Treasurer 17502 S. 750 W Wanatah, IN 46390

If you would like to express your condolences to Brigitte’s family, you may send cards to her mother at the following address:

Beverly Greenberg 10409 Edgewood Ave. Silver Spring, MD 20901

Special note: Our friend Brigitte Greenberg died from complications of esophageal cancer. As a public service, we think it is appropriate to honor her by publishing a link to an article Brigitte wrote in 1999. As a tribute to her memory, we hope a life may be saved for someone who may not be paying attention to the warning signs. Because, by press time, we do not have permission from AP to reprint the article, we can only provide this link: http://community.seattletimes.nwsource.com/archive/?date=19990318&slug=2950158 WRAP Adoptions: Linda Larson of MI adopted Huron John and Nazik Kissinger of MI adopted Sonny Shawn Curtis of OH adopted Devo Kathryn Miller of WA adopted Lucy Loo Timothy and Lori Heaton of UT adopted Ellie Ruth Jacquet of UT adopted Oliver Steven and Elizabeth Billings of OH adopted Chance Adrienne Farrell of Canada adopted Blais Ilona Yenny of CO adopted senior boy Jack John and Renae Simmons of CO adopted Serena Kyle Lewis of NC adopted Ruby WRAP Donations: Kelley Lewis $50 in memory of Alex who was loved by Leslie and Brian Hagert Hale Pet Door $34 (donation from purchase of a pet door by Brigitte Greenberg) Doug and Mary Beth Arthur $150 to thank Dr. Henderson for her veterinary care at the national and also a thanks to Christine Heath and Jan Swayze Curry Jeanette and Steven Bell $30 in honor of Nicole Pepoon's birthday Helping Udders $35 for our rescue link AWC $1360 for WRAP's 1/3 portion of the 2011 National Raffle proceeds

2011 TOP TWENTY The 2011 AWC National in Lexington was a wonder-ful Whippet centered weekend. On behalf of the Top Twenty Committee, I want to thank Jan Swayze Curry for all her support. Jan did an outstanding job! I want to thank the 2011 Top Twenty Judges for their service. Our Top Twenty Event judges were: Group Judge: Susan St. John Brown, Breeder Judge: Kathy Armato and Handler Judge: Karen Roberson. Thank you for your part in making the Top Twenty Event a success. Our Top Twenty “People’s Choice” was the beautiful red brindle and white bitch GCH. Snowcap’s Patent Leather owned by Harriet Vincent and Dianne Reimer and shown by Leslie Potts. The AWC Top Twenty Winner for 2011 was the stunning black and white bitch GCH. Snow Hill Onyx at Stoneledge SC owned by James Clever and Susanne Hughes, DVM and shown by Graham Swayze-Fudge. Scott Northern was our MC and I want to thank him for a wonderful job filled with humor. Thank you Scott! Harriet, the music was a wonderful addition to the-Top Twenty Event. I appreciate all your hard work coordinating the music and for suggesting it would add to the Event. It was a great addition. I also need to apologize to Harriet and Dianne for the errors in their ad. A corrected ad will be published. This year the Top Twenty planning was especially difficult for me due to many trying family issues and a remodel of our house. I appreciate the patience from the committee. I especially want to thank Sue Carbajal who stepped in and helped out. It is frus-trating when you have to move the majority of your household goods to storage units and then try to find the items you need. If you have ever worked on events, getting people to stay to help clean up is difficult. I really appreciate all the help we received after the event. I want to thank the people who helped with set-up and clean up. That is always difficult and the additional help was greatly appreciated. A big thank you to: Sue Carbajal, Jackie Hubble, Harriet Vincent and her hus-band Ed, Scot Northern, Joe and Anne Fazio, Red and Denise Tatro, Kim Newell, Kim Harwood, Judy Filler, Bill Davenport, anyone else I may have forgot-ten and most of all Ron Waggoner who had to put up with hauling all the Top Twenty supplies to Ken-tucky, Thank you all!

Linda Waggoner

SECRETARY’S REPORT

Please take time to read the minutes from the an-nual meeting held in April and the petition that was presented to the Board and membership. They are printed elsewhere in this edition of Whippet News. We received the invitation and application for the Meet The Breeds event to be held in New York City this November. Sharon Sakson has graciously agreed to head that committee this year and did a bang up job in 2010. Thank you Sharon!! The AWC has donated $1500 to the AKC Disaster Relief Fund for all of the horrendous tornados in Geor-gia, Alabama, Mississippi and Missouri. Many, many dogs have either lost their owners or are unclaimed. $500 of this came from the Western Regional Spe-cialty. Thank you!!

WHIPPET SPECIALTIES 2008-2010

Are specialties still special? In the 1970s and into

the ‘80s there were basically only three or four Whippet specialties each year in the US. All of them were huge, often with 200 dogs entered or more, so winning any of them was a big deal, and it seemed as if all the major ex-hibitors from around the country travelled to all of them. (I know I used to go to both the AWC Eastern and Mid-Western regional specialties, plus of course to my “local” AWC Western regional, and once in a while to the South-ern as well.)

Then, in 1984, the Southern California Whippet

Fanciers Association held the very first Whippet specialty that was not hosted by AWC. What a great idea, we all thought, and since then the number of regional club spe-cialties has grown to such an extent that I’m wondering if specialties are the victim of their own success. We now have anything from 17 to 19 Whippet specialties each year, and the support for them isn’t what it used to be: many of them don’t even have 30 Whippets in competi-tion, and how “special” is that? However, for the record, we’re not even close to many other breeds, some of which have more than a hundred specialties each year…

Nevertheless, if any shows are important it’s the

specialty shows, which usually have breed specialist judges and at best attract all the local competition and sometimes outsiders as well. Interestingly, while the spe-cialties today are generally smaller than they used to be, the AWC National has remained a true showcase for the breed, one of the biggest single-breed shows of ANY breed anywhere. The first national was held in 1987, insti-gated by Cathy Gaidos and myself, but later taken to greater heights by Cindy Scott and her amazing teams in different parts of the country. It’s the biggest Whippet show in the world, and instead of going to the other AWC regionals many of us now just focus on attending the Na-tional.

If specialties have any importance, Whippet peo-

ple ought to know where they are held, who’s judging, how big the entry was and who’s winning. I compiled an early list of all Whippet specialties, from the first one in 1931, that was published in the AWC 2000 and 2001 An-nuals, and an update appeared in the 2008 AWC Annual. Below is a list of Whippet specialties held from 2008 through April 2011. These results are taken from the monthly AKC Awards published through June 2011 and should be complete, but there are a few question marks (see below*), and if you see anything in the following that’s incorrect I would be grateful if you could write to me at [email protected] so we may print a correc-tion.

For the record, it appears conclusive that the all-time US SBIS record is shared by two bitches, Ch. Brush-wood’s Moxi of Endeavor and GCh. Starline’s Chanel, cur-rently with 11 SBIS each, while Ch. Sporting Fields Rock On has 10. With the ever-increasing number of special-ties, these figures will no doubt change in the future.

More figures: the last four AWC national special-

ties had an average of 452 dogs in competition. The 21 regional AWC specialties I have figures for during this time averaged 68 dogs in competition, and the 36 most recent other Whippet specialties, hosted by independent regional clubs, averaged 55 dogs in competition. (AKC, of course, prints only figures of dogs present and competing in the official classes.)

The abbreviation in parenthesis after each club’s

name simply indicate in which AKC Awards issue and on which page the results appear.

I have offered Christine to send regular specialty

updates to Whippet News in the future as I go through each new month’s AKC Awards.

BO BENGTSON

* I have access to all the AKC Awards CDs ex-

cept those for January and February 2009, and AKC has promised replacement copies. The only specialty likely to be covered in those CDs is the one hosted by the Greater Chicago Whippet Club in November 2008; I have in-cluded the results I found on the club’s website.

The AKC Awards for some reason does not list

the Whippet classes at Atlanta KC on 10-23-10 as an AWC specialty. I am sure that’s an error, so included the results below anyway.

P.S. AKC of course does not record Sweepstakes results, since such classes are not official competition. AKC also does not specify if a specialty is a national or a regional event.

P.P.S. I should have added GCh. titles when ap-

plicable below, and will do so in the future. Sorry… 2008 (17 specialties): Arizona Whippet Association (AA April 246), Scottdale AZ 2-28-08. Judge Harriett N Lee (Winsmith), 88 in comp.
