General introduction Within the framework of the course of Marketing & Innovation, we are asked to make our imagination walk. Indeed, we have to form groups of 5 to imagine an innovation by the services. It’s called the “servicization”. For that, we have three possible options :

• Product oriented service • Usage oriented service • Result oriented service

Once we have found ideas, we are going to discuss them to choose the better on. Then, we will be able to analyse it according the strategic marketing and the operational marketing.

Part 1 : Innovation

Introduction This first part gets organised according to three points :

• Do a brainstorming to find many ideas by following the three possible options that we have

• Choose the three ideas that we prefer among all of those that we expressed • Organise a focus group to discuss the three ideas and to choose the better one

After that, and before going on the next part, we have to define exactly what will be the project to develop it in the best conditions. !!

I. Brainstorming First we had to find innovating ideas, using a brainstorming, at the beginning we try to find idea without framework, we had a lot of ideas but most of them were not enough focused on the subject (innovation by servicization). So we decided to structure our thinking. First we ask ourselves what was trendy and we came to sustainable development then we thought of what bothers us in our daily student life and finally we reflected upon what will always remain necessary (basic need according to Maslow) such as eating and drinking. The vast majority of our ideas stemmed to these three categories.

A. Idea classification

! Product oriented service

"All you need for your kids" Children grow quickly and that all their clothes, toys, sport equipment are no longer used and take place in the cupboards. The concept here is to organize a barter which would be administrated via internet with an inventory of all the articles (photos, description, sizes and prices).

! Usage oriented service “The printer of the neighbour” Students often need to print documents and they do not necessarily dispose of a printer. Moreover it is expensive to get it done in a print shop. First thing would be to create the list of the people who own printers. Then the idea is to create a web based platform offering printers to those who need it. Their description and location would be available and payment would be made on line. « Shared dressing » The idea here is to exchange elements of a wardrobe or some accessories like handbags. People who have many clothes and fashion accessories would list them on internet and they would "rent» them for a limited period of time .For the "customer" it gives the possibility to wear different clothes, etc.. for a limited amount of money and not to be obliged to always put the same things on. There could even be an option to sell/buy rather than rent . “A shared vegetable garden” The concept is the following: the owner of a garden rents an unused part of it to another person who can grow her own choice of vegetable. This builds upon today's desire of eating sound food and the service would be provided easily through an internet platform.

Page 5: The wine's bank marketing report

! 4!

! Result oriented service “The wine's bank” This concept originates from the fact that many people do not have the possibility to keep their wine in good conditions. We put a cellar at disposal , we manage it and offer additional services on demand .We create a website to ease the exchange and render a smooth service. “Get your "home grown" vegetables delivered at home” A professional gardener owning a large garden would grow a selection of vegetables upon demand of people who don't have the possibility to do it. The vegetables would be taken care of, harvested and delivered by the gardeners following the seasons . That would be done against an amount of money with the benefit of a guaranteed origin and a good and sound quality.

B. Our selection

1) The wine's bank 2) The shared vegetable garden 3) The printer of the neighbour

Why these three ideas? First we eliminated a couple of ideas because they were not economically viable and then we selected the most promising ones. In deed we felt there are the ones which are likely to meet a real demand, to correspond to “real needs”.

II. Our three ideas

A. A shared vegetable garden

! What is it ? This concept is based on solidarity, share and proximity. Nowadays, people are careful with what they are eating. They want to know from where it comes from. So, we want to take advantage of this new way of thinking.

Page 6: The wine's bank marketing report

! 5!

Indeed, this concept means that a person living in a house with a garden could share it, by renting it, with an other one who doesn’t have access to a garden, for instance because he lives in an apartment. So, a person who have a vegetal garden, but too much place, can rent a part to an other one who doesn’t have one. This other person comes with its own seeds and cultivates what she wants and the way she expects it to be. Except that she has to respect the other part of the person who rents her the vegetable garden. This concept creates a real win-win situation, for 2 people, because they can share their passion, the owner can rent the excess garden that he doesn’t use and the other person can have its own vegetables. Moreover, it’s in the mood of the time for people to consume fresh and seasonal products.

! How does it work ? The best way to make 2 people meet for this concept is to create a platform on Internet. This platform could permit to the 2 parts to sign up :

- the one that as a big vegetable garden or who wants to develop with an other person a vegetable garden can put an advertisement

- the one who is looking for a vegetable garden can have a look at the advertisement and chose the perfect one according to its criterion.

All these persons could meet each other on this platform, and they could choose some characteristics too :

∴ The profile ∴ The location ∴ The vegetable garden’s size ∴ The garden’s size ∴ The things to do to maintain the garden ∴ The “opening hours”, when the garden owner can open his garden

With this platform, it’s easy and quick ! With this concept, intended to urban people, we have economical, social and environmental dimensions, and a win-win exchange. It’s open to everyone.

Page 7: The wine's bank marketing report

! 6!

B. The wine’s bank

! What is it ? This concept is based on community and proximity. For a lot of people who live in big cities, it’s difficult to preserve good bottles of wine because of a lack of cellars. Most of people living in big cities are in apartment, this implies that they don’t have cellar, or enough space to conserve wine for a long time and with quality. That’s why we invent the concept of “The Wine’s Bank”. The aim is to create a big collective cellar in the centre of a city, where all conditions are gathered to preserve wine (temperature, humidity, luminosity…). People could bring their bottles in this cellar to conserve them the time they want. This big cellar is advantageous for particulars because it reduces the risks for the wine to mature bad, and it permits to include a lot of bottles in the same time. In addition,

this cellar could purpose a lot of additional services like advice to find the good bottle of the moment, advice to know how to match a wine with a dish, courses of oenology, etc.

! How does it work ? The best way for owners of wine to drop off their bottles in our Wine’s Bank is to register on Internet. On the Wine’s Bank’s Website, owners could sign up and enter their characteristics :

∴ When they want to drop off their bottles ∴ How many bottles they have ∴ How many space they want ∴ How long bottles have to be conserve

Once the bottle are in our Wine’s Bank, each owner has his own Cellar Book to know :

∴ When a bottle enter the bank

Page 8: The wine's bank marketing report

! 7!

∴ When a bottle exit the bank ∴ How many time the bottle will state in the bank to reach the good maturity

In addition of this basic service of conservation, the Wine’s Bank could purpose a lot of additional services like :

∴ Oenologist advices ∴ News about tendency ∴ Advices to know where people should buy their future bottle of wine ∴ Delivery at home

In term of money, we thought that packages are the best solutions. Each service has a price but the possibility to do packages will be more interesting for clients. They could have the choice to pay to rent only the number of boxes they need according the number of bottle they have, or to pay for a packages that allowed us to rent space in the cellar but also to have access to additional services. This concept is thinking for people having a comfortable life, and having the means to buy good bottles of wine and services to conserve them. We think that this concept could be very interesting and very beneficial, keeping the spirit of community and proximity.

C. Printer of the neighbour

! What is it ? !This concept emerged from our student’s experience and needs. So it’s based on proximity and share. It is quite simple, as students we always have to print a lot of things such as courses, documents reports, etc. But it’s difficult to find a printer and the printer shop is really expensive and rarely next to your house. So the concept is to share printers between students who have a printer and student who don’t have. The idea is quite similar with

“la machine du voisin”. !!

! How does it work ? !All starts with an Internet platform where students can search a printer close to his house or his neighborhood. For this we use a geolocalisation technology that allows to see on a map where printers are located. Once the

closest printer located, the student makes his choice and has to take out a subscription.

Page 9: The wine's bank marketing report

! 8!

Subscription is a minimum of print per month. The principal goal of a subscription is to avoid to the printer’s owner to earn money cents by cents because the cost of one print is very low. For example 300 prints for one month could be 15 euros, paper not includes. Finally the control of prints and payment is made through our website: each subscriber has a number account, which permits to the printer owner to identify him to check his account status and reports how many prints he has made. The aim sources of revenue for us are from advertising spots on our website and subscribes where we take a commission.

III. Focus group

C. Analyse of the three ideas

! A shared vegetables garden

First impression It is a good idea, but the project is not well understood in general, there is confusing aspects and the goal is not really clear. We had difficulties because all members of the group did not agree to the same thing: some would like to rent a part of the garden, others to pay, others would like to introduce a social dimension of aid learning and sharing etc. Advantages This project is also based on the concept of sharing and exchange. It would allow for savings, share a passion for some people who have a large garden and carry a passion with those who do not have a garden. As with the previous project, there is no large initial investment because everything depends also on the website. This project could help in cities some social mixing between people in apartment and those with homes and create new friendships. Linking individual is free and they can determine the conditions of the contract : repayment of a portion of the crop to the owner , lease of land , crops against harvest etc. Environmental and ecological aspects are highlighted because there is no need to develop new areas and harvested products are then consumed by the gardener and the owner, which is the trend now because people like to know where come from what is on their plate. Disadvantages It is a concept that already exists and several websites offer it. There are also community gardens in many cities as well as vegetable pickings, so to be attractive we must differentiate

Page 10: The wine's bank marketing report

! 9!

prices. Then, it is quite complicated to know how to organize the service and it implies that the owners give their keys to gardeners or remain available at home for days. Improvements We need to be more precise in defining the objectives and to limit the service only to a free exchange or a rental, but not both. Then, once individuals are brought into contact they are allowed to arrange them for the distribution of crops.

Also, it is could be useful to create a schedule to register online for one hand the times when the owner is at home and another hand the availability of the gardener.

! The wine’s bank !First impression Interesting idea that seems to meet a real need in big cities. This concept fits well in the concept of servicization because the service comes from a product that already exists. However, the question is to know if people are willing to rent a space especially for storing their wine. Advantages Project that allows fans and passionate of good wine store their bottles in a safe place and receive professional advices specifically tailored to the bottles they have in the cellar. In addition, the room is removable and can therefore grow or shrink depending on the consumption of each. So there is no lost space and all necessary for the proper wine storage conditions are met. We also want to play on the proximity so people do not have to go too far and there is also a possibility to set up a system of home delivery. Regarding security cameras and systems will be installed digicodes to reassure our customers. Finally, once the wine is placed in the cellar it is supposed to stay there for several years that we generate income in the very long term. Disadvantages We thought to hire someone to monitor and manage the cellar. However, for this type of service there will probably not pass every day because when the bottles are placed people leave them for several years. That is why it is not possible to hire someone but we must rather do this by telephone and install digital codes for each room.

Page 11: The wine's bank marketing report

! 10!

At first we thought about doing that between individuals, but the conditions of the contract for the duration, rates and security seems us difficult to establish. Rents in major cities are relatively expensive, especially in Paris and it can cause problems for our initial installation because we have not yet generated a lot of revenue. Improvements We have to develop some packages to suit the desired space and the opportunity to receive professional advice. It should also offer slots with making appointments to pick up the bottles. We thought renting a true cave but as it is difficult to find rent we think rent a local in town and arrange it for all storage conditions are present.

• Printer of the neighbour

First impression The idea seemed to please everyone because it is true that as student we are all affected by this problem, so we could be first interested in this new service. In addition, it is a servicisation because we share an expensive and bulky product (printer) for drift it in service. It is also quite simple service that needs a large part of the population. Advantages This project does not require an initial investment too important because it is only necessary to create a website on which individuals will register to exchange with other people, on the same principle that « la machine du voisin ». Then the concept of sharing and social cohesion is present because the service is between individuals. This service would allow individuals with no place or who can’t afford a printer to use one, cheap and especially close to home, and printer owners could profitable quickly by sharing with their neighbors. It will also savings of moving because we are trying to develop a local service, ocusing the proximity. Desavantages After extensively studied various aspects of this project we realized that several items were questionable. Firstly there is the price of this service: indeed, to print only a few pages the cost is unlikely to exceed a few cents. Is that printers owners will be willing to stay available at home for a long time to receive in exchange a ridiculous amount of money ? Thus there arises the problem of the payment, if the exchange is cash it requires having always carry small change, so we thought to payment cards with 10 € slices but therefore it is necessary for printer users to use this service a number of times large enough to be able to finish their

Page 12: The wine's bank marketing report

! 11!

card. Finally, the last problem is our own remuneration because it is difficult to collect a commission on each service performed because the amount of money is too low. Improvements To overcome these problems we thought it would be possible to extend this service to other products, especially on appliances and DIY. Thus, payment cards could become profitable faster and the site could attract more members. Then the financing of this project could be done through advertising on our website. It should also establish a system of online payment, avoiding use of the cash and make sure the owner to be paid and possibly imagine a price on time. Finally, in addition to the rent it would be interesting for offer to exchange goods between individuals, where each person has a product that the other wants to use.

D. Chosen idea To help us choosing the best project between the three, we asked the members of the focus group to give a mark and to classify the three ideas from the best one to the worst. On average, “the wine’s bank” reaches the first place followed by “a shared vegetables garden”.

Here are the average for each project :

∴ The wine’s bank : 7/10! ∴ A shared vegetables garden : 6/10 ∴ The printer of the neighbour : 4,8/10

It’s clear that we cannot take the risk to develop the project “The printer of the neighbour”. Indeed, thanks to the focus group, we noticed that it was not a project very interesting. However, we could have hesitated between the two others. In fact, the members of the focus group gave us good advices for both of them. They were hesitating between the two. Finally, we decided to choose “The wine’s bank”. Why ?

∴ It fits well in the concept of servicization ∴ We all agreed to develop that project ∴ We clearly know what we want to develop ∴ We have many ideas to make it growth

Page 13: The wine's bank marketing report

! 12!

Conclusion First of all, the first part was quite funny. We exchanged a lot at the beginning to try to find three potential ideas. It was impressive to see how our brains could have crazy ideas. Secondly, it was very interesting to conduct a focus group. We learnt a lot from their critics. But they also gave us very helpful advices so that we can improve our project. We understood how much it was important to share ideas to make them more relevant. That is why, we have chosen to develop the project “The Wine’s Bank”. Indeed, during the focus group, that project was more apparent than the others. The guests found much more possible options to develop in that project. We hoped that we have made the good choice and that this marketing report will be interesting to read !

Page 18: The wine's bank marketing report

! 17!

Agathe : Oui tu as raison Ophélie.

Page 19: The wine's bank marketing report

! 18!

Page 20: The wine's bank marketing report

! 19!

Page 21: The wine's bank marketing report

! 20!

Page 22: The wine's bank marketing report

! 21!

Page 23: The wine's bank marketing report

! 22!
