    Also in this issue:

Trouble, hardship, and suffering come to all of us at some time or another. It may feel like such things are a waste of human life and should be avoidedat all costs. But that’s not the case. The secret when tough times come isthe attitude you have prior to bottoming out in your life. In other words, the

secret is how you look at andunderstand tough times.

Attitudes are important. God’sconcern is that our attitudeshould be right (Phil. 2:5), so thenour actions, for the most part, wiltake care of themselves. When

tough times come, it’s the things we are sure of that inuence our reactions. That’s why we need biblical truth, the foundation of knowledge upon which wecan build our lives through the development of proper attitudes.

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials”(James 1:2). Our humanity resents and rebels against trials and troubles. However, Jesus teaches us that Christian maturity can come only throughtesting. Trials produce patience and endurance, which lead to maturity.

God builds character before He calls for service. He must work in us before Hecan work through us. For example, God spent 25 years working in Abrahambefore He could give him his promised son.

James, Jesus’ half-brother, called himself the bondservant of God. James wascompletely committed to the service of God and His Son, Jesus Christ. Thiswas a voluntary commitment. The word servant is a favorite description of theChristian because Jesus Christ appeared on earth in the form of a servant.

God cannot work in us without our consent. There must be a surrendered will.A mature person will not argue with God’s will. Instead, he accepts it willinglyand obeys it joyfully. If we try to go through tough times without surrenderedwills, we will miss what God has for us.

How should you respond to tough times? We need the big picture: God is doingsomething. And we need the little picture: God is doing something in me!

We need biblical truth, thefoundation of knowledge uponwhich we can build our livesthrough the development of

    proper attitudes.

Dr. Young, does God tempt us?

God never tempts us to sin. The evil forces of this world and Satan tempt believersand nonbelievers.

But sometimes tough times come and we don’t understand why. We say, “What’s going on? Whathave I done? I know I’m not perfect, but I don’t deserve all this pain.” God puts us through timesof testing to get us in shape and to produce endurance.

There is a testing of our faith. When tough times come into your life and into my life, it will revealthe genuineness of our faith, or the lack of it.

Do the writings of Paul and James contradict each other? Are we justied by faith or works?

Paul says in Romans, “Put your faith in Jesus Christ and you are right with God, and then works willfollow.” James ips it over and says, “Show me your works, your Christian lifestyle, and you can be

sure that behind that Christian lifestyle of righteous living will be a faith in Jesus Christ.”

Romans says faith then works. James says show me your works, which will be an indication of your faith. Paul deals primarily with the doctrine of justication before God, which comes not at allthrough works, but entirely through faith in Jesus Christ and His atoning death.

James, on the other hand, deals primarily with justication before men. He is emphasizing the factthat such a faith in Christ should result in an outward life of good works, of moral living, and thusmen can see our faith. James deals with the practical Christian life, as it should be lived before thewatching world.

    Dear Friend,

Have you felt totally inadequate at times to deal with situations thathave popped up in your life? The Bible has the solution for this: AskGod to give you wisdom! God does not scold you for a lack of wisdomor for foolishness. He offers you a full measure of wisdom.

Much of the wisdom you need is found in the Bible, His Word. The

Bible is full of proven truth. It speaks authoritatively to all aspects ofyour life, including your social life, your secular life, your sex life, andyour spiritual life.

The way God gives to His children is beautiful. He gives liberally withno thought of any return whatsoever. Many times we give and weexpect some sort of return. That’s not true with God. He keeps givingand giving!
