SportsGolfers keep swingingby Kyson Channell

The boys’ and girls’ golf teams have been very busy this spring. The varsity girls ended their regular sea-son first in the SRV, with the varsity boys in second place. The ladies had a perfect, undefeated season, while the boys won two tournaments.

At the JV district tournament May 5 in Payette, both teams did well. Kourtney Grothaus finished in first place, and Rylee-Anne Mackay placed third. On the boys’ side, Jim Hehir took second place, and Jackson Wall was fourth. Neither team had enough players, however, to make a full team for team stats.

The varsity teams competed in their district tourna-ment May 8 in Homedale. The boys’ team finished first by four strokes, followed by the girls’ team in second place. Lindsey Hurd and Matt Hurd both finished third individually.

The state tournament was held earlier this week in Buhl. At press time, results were not available.

Tennis sends three to stateby Demmy Navarro

The tennis season is down to the state tournament. Singles’ districts were held in Parma and doubles’ in Fruitland May 8, 9, and 10. Dominic Aubrey took first in men’s singles, and the team of Ashlyn Brush and Katelyn Westover took fourth in girls’ doubles. These three Wolverines will compete in the state tournament starting today at Vallivue in Caldwell.

“I’m really excited to be coaching WHS tennis. I very much appreciate the effort that each student athlete makes to be a part of our tennis team. It’s my goal to draw out the best in each of them, to teach them a love for the sport of tennis, and to help them become competitive, strong players individually and as a team,” said new head coach Angie Soulen.

Baseball ends seasonby Michael McCallie

The varsity baseball team re-cently wound up its regular season with an overall record of 10-12, going 5-3 in conference play. The team was led by Aus-tyn Grothaus, Hauston Roth, Logan Rowley, Matt Pritchard, Kristian Claudio, Zac Hinton, Chris Beltran, Evan Loomis, and Jacks Whitehurst.

In the district tournament held in Payette, the boys lost, 6-3, in the first round to Homedale. This sent them to the consolation round versus Parma. The boys pulled out a close win, 4-3. In the next game versus Homedale, the boys lost 3-1 with Pritchard on the mound the whole game. Senior Chris Beltran had the team’s only scoring run. This ended the Wolverines’ season.

Coach vonBrethorst listed “strong pitching with a significant increase on batting” as a strength from the end of the season. “Defense wins champion-ships; offense sells tickets,” he added.

The state tournament will be held this weekend.

Softball ends seasonby Michael McCallie

The varsity Lady Wolverine softball team ended their regular season with an over-all record of 14-9, going 4-4 in conference play. The team was led by Kelsey Noble, Trista Goodenough, Emily Gluch, Sarah Jensen, Katie Davis, CJ Davis, Ti-ara Goodenough, Theresa Moyle, and Maren Coffman.

In the district tournament, the Ladies beat Fruit-land, 3-2, in the first round. This sent them to play Homedale next. This was a tough game for the Ladies, losing 11-4. In the third round, the team played Fruitland, losing 5-1. Senior Kelsey Noble pitched the entire game, with senior Alex Rowley scoring the only run. This ended the Ladies’ season.

JV Coach Peterson said, “Our play and confidence peaked at the right time. It has been a fun team with positive growth.”

The state tournament will be held this weekend in Nampa.

Opinion/Editorial

Editor’s columnby Lupita Perez

The countdown begins! Only a few days remain for the Class of 2014. Af-ter four years of learning and moving to the top, we seniors will, once again, be underclassmen. This time, however, we will be on our own. It seems that senioritis didn’t hit as hard this year as it has in others. This year, I have observed, many were still able to keep up with homework. Although procrastination did, once in a while take over, seniors were responsible in turning work in on time. As the school year comes closer to an end, I wish good luck to the graduates of 2014 and a big thanks to all of those who have helped or supported the Wolverine Scoop in any way. Without you all, this year would have been a rough one. It has been a great year full of great articles. We are sure, Sarah and I, that the new, soon to be senior editors, Becca and Sheridan, will continue to bring great things to the newspaper. I hope that everyone has a fun and safe summer and good luck to the Class of 2015.

Junior editor’s columnby Sheridan Curtis

We’re done for this year! Well, the seniors are when they read this. Sorry, everyone else. However, don’t be depressed. We will be done and you will have the entire summer to do as you please. It’s been a good year; don’t ruin it with stupid decisions! STAY SAFE THIS SUMMER! See you next year as we progress to the position as Wolverine Scoop’s senior editors!

College Cornerby Miss Peterson

As the school year winds down, so, it seems, does ambition to do school work. It is much more fun to stay outside in the warmth than to finish homework. However, in most classes, this part of the year is just as important as any other, if not more so. We are finishing senior projects and getting ready for finals. Every year counts when it comes to your GPA, so making sure that you’re putting in your full effort to all school work is always important.

Planning is another part of the equation when it comes to preparing for life after high school. One way to start on that track is to attend Weiser High School’s College Night May 20th. It starts at 6:30 pm and is an event for students and families (students can come by themselves as well). The evening will begin with a scholarship and finan-cial aid workshop followed by three sessions that students can attend by college and military reps. Current representatives scheduled to attend are: Northwest Lineman College, Idaho State Univer-sity, Boise State University, University of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State College, College of Southern Idaho, College of Western Idaho, Treasure Valley Community College, Razzle Dazzle School of Cosmetology, Idaho National Air Guard, United States Coast Guard, and the United States Marine Corps. It’s not often that we get this many rep-resentatives to WHS, so take advantage! Eighth through eleventh graders are invited.

Lastly, I want to remind juniors about taking the ACT or SAT this summer. The best time to take it is June because there is no school, but the material is still fresh in the brain. Many seniors regret not taking either the ACT or SAT multiple times when it comes down to admissions and scholarships. Take each at least once!

Fashion policeby Esmeralda Negrete

What I love about fashion is how different it is in other cultures. India’s fashion is rich in out-standing tradition and bright colors. Women have traditional clothing that is worn in varied styles. Known as a sari, which is a piece of long fabric, it comes in different styles, textures, and colors. The way that a woman wears a sari depends on her age, status, occupation, region, and religion. The short little blouse worn under a sari is called a choli. Surprisingly, nose pins are common in women. They signify purity and marriage. Jewelry is also very popular in young and older women. On one’s wedding day, the attire is “elevated”. The dresses are much more vibrant and beauti-ful, and their jewelry is astonishing. Although, some may argue that tattoos in American aren’t “fashion”, in India on their wedding day, brides get a henna tattoo. It isn’t a permanent one, but that temporary tattoo is part of their fashion on that day. As for men in India, they may be found wearing conventional western clothes.

College of the Month: University of Idahoby Becca Torres

The University of Idaho, founded in 1889 in Moscow, Idaho, is Idaho’s oldest public university. As a land-grant university and the primary research university in the state, UI has the largest campus in the state (1585 acres). UI is a rural, residential campus, with four residence hall communities to choose from on campus, as well as 27 housed fraternities and sororities. On cam-pus residence is currently required for freshmen, and many other upperclassmen choose to live on campus in the Greek system or the residence halls. Apartments on campus are available for families, married couples, graduate students, law students, and non-traditional students. The “Law Cluster” is a group of apartments reserved for law students, allowing for a community close to campus for law students, facilitating study groups.

Career of the month – Interpreter/Translatorby Taylor Kissell

Median Salary: $44,160Speaking, writing, and sign language are some of the most common ways that people inter-act with each other, no matter the language or dialect being used. Interpreters and translators are advantageous in this field if they master a language that could be translated or interpreted in all fields of communication. They could be hired by global companies for customer interac-tion.

National chocolate chip dayby Vanessa Negrete

May is filled with vari-ous interesting and bizarre holidays. However, today, May 15, is a sweet holiday that you won’t want to miss out on. May 15th is National Chocolate Chip Day, a favorite holiday to all bakers and cookie addicts. Chocolate chips are an essential ingredient in dozens of delicious baked goods—chocolate chip cookies, chocolate chip pancakes, chocolate chip muffins, chocolate chip brownies, chocolate chip bagels, and many more. Today, 25% of all the cookies baked in the United States are chocolate chip! So grab a bag of chocolate chips this month and enjoy this recipe!

Ingredients1 cup (2 sticks) salted butter, softened½ cup sugar1½ cup packed brown sugar2 eggs2 tsp. vanilla extract2¾ cups (12 oz.) all-purpose flour¾ tsp. smallish-medium coarse sea salt1 tsp. baking soda1½ tsp. baking powder2¼ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

InstructionsPreheat oven to 360 degrees. Cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar until it is nice and fluffy (approx. 3 minutes on medium-high speed). Add both eggs and vanilla and beat for an additional 2 minutes. Add baking soda, baking powder, salt, and flour until cookie batter is fully incorporated. Finally, add chocolate chips until well distributed. The cookie batter should be somewhat thick. Drop about 2 tablespoons of dough or use a medium cookie scoop and plop the batter onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12-14 minutes until the edges are nice and golden brown. Remove from heat and allow the cookies to stay on the cookie sheet for an additional 2 minutes. Pick up the parchment paper with the cookies still on top and transfer to a cool non-porous surface. Allow the cookies to cool on the paper for at least 3 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

May 2014 horoscopesby Kayla Tuel

Aries (3/21-4/19): As far as getting ahead and achieving things, this is a low point. Try to work out or find ways to express yourself physically, like working in the yard or playing sports. Otherwise, you are prone to become belligerent with the people you are closest to.Taurus (4/20-5/20): Sudden meetings with strang-ers may not seem quite so strange today. Occasional-ly it’s an idea to open up to chance encounters which are karmic throwbacks and relish the resumption of relationships. Be open to ‘new’ friendships which aren’t new at all.Gemini (5/21-6/21): What is said and what is felt may not at all be the same today, so watch out for inner contradictions coming from those around you. Putting pen to paper may mean a rewrite down the line, so be careful what you sign, and intentions and reality may not be on the same page. It is a better time for winding things up than diving in.Cancer (6/22-7/22): Good luck comes in threes, so be on the lookout for those omens today. As the day wears on, each successive omen could herald better and better things. You must remain aware and alert to what the universe is saying.Leo (7/23-8/22): It’s a good time to get together with close friends or acquaintances and just so-cialize. Communication comes easily, and you can get yourself across without having to work at it. By joining in the general company, you enjoy the benefits of all. People are feeling insecure, so avoid encouraging any negativity you encounter. Virgo (8/23-9/22): This is a time for being with people and especially giving something of yourself and your talents to others. You want to be seen and noticed. You receive appreciation and a positive response, and possibly an opportunity or personal contact which will be quite beneficial.Libra (9/23-10/22): Self-improvement on all levels is something that you are certainly not adverse to, and today could hold an opportunity to advance yourself in some areas. News of someone’s success is something to celebrate. A work challenge becomes something you truly relish, despite having to cram beforehand.Scorpio (10/23-11/21): Good taste is timeless and relying on the good old ways will pave your way to success. Rely on moves you have perfected, the simpler the better, and your style will be a magnet to what/whomever you want to come your way. Refined elegance beats bluster every time, so come on like the class act you are.Sagittarius (11/22-12/21): Your ambition to better yourself is coming to the forefront. You want to not only improve your lifestyle, but would like to achieve more independence as well. Your desire for success and recognition is growing and will drive you to make changes that ensure you will enjoy both in the near future.Capricorn (12/22-1/19): An unresolved romantic problem could resurface and you’ll have to deal with it. The trick is to stay calm and keep a positive attitude towards your partner, as well as to those you encounter in your social life generally. Some irritation or displeasure caused by others could be a reflection of your own inner uneasiness just now. Aquarius (1/20-2/18): Have faith in yourself and those around you. Stability and permanence satisfy a deep emotional need. Music is likely to play a more important role for you than usual, and a period of material acquisition can satisfy a deep yearning to be free from want. Envision what you need and it will appear for you right on time.
