Even though Emaline has two boys falling in and out of love with her, what's most at stake for her is figuring out what she wants for her future and deciding who to prioritize within her highly populated and very busy life.

The Silver Star—Adult Fiction By Jeannette Walls

Being a single mother is never easy, but for Charlotte Holladay, a wannabe folk singer in 1970, raising her 15- and 12-year-old daughters, Liz and Jean (aka Bean), is more than she can handle. Known for dropping out when things get tough, Charlotte's latest spell of parental abandonment attracts police atten-tion and the girls flee rather than face being placed in foster care. A cross-country bus trip lands them on the doorstep of their only relative, the previ-ously unmet Uncle Tinsley. Their arrival proves to be as much of a shock for the reclusive widower as it is for the girls themselves. As the trio learns to co-exist, Liz and Bean try to fit into the small southern town. Readers familiar with Walls' backstory from her memoir, The Glass Castle (2005), will recognize ele-ments of her personal history in this captivating, read-in-one-sitting.

The Possibility Dogs: What a Handful of “Unadoptables” Taught Me about Service, Hope, and Heal-ing—Nonfiction By Susannah Charleson

Charleson journeys into the world of psychiatric service, where dogs aid hu-mans with disabilities that may be unseen but are no less felt. Inspired by her own experience, she learns to identify abandoned dogs with service potential, often plucking them from shelters at the last minute, training them to work be-side hurting partners, to whom these dogs bring intelligence, comfort, and hope. From Merlin the chocolate lab puppy with the broken tail, who now sta-bilizes his partner’s panic attacks; to Ollie, the blind and deaf terrier, rescued moments before it was too late, who now soothes anxious children, Charleson sees canine potential everywhere, often where she least expects it.

A Curious Man: The Strange and Brilliant Life of Robert “Believe it or not” Ripley—Nonfiction By Neal Thompson

After selling his first cartoon to “Time” magazine at age eighteen, Ripley gained notoriety with outrageous declarations that somehow always turned out to be true—such as that Charles Lindbergh was the sixty-seventh man to fly across the Atlantic. Assisted by a harem of female admirers and devoted researcher, Norbert Pearlroth, Ripley developed his wildly popular radio show “Believe It or Not,” which made him one of the most successful entertainment figures of his time and spurred him to search the globe for bizarre facts, exotic human curiosities, and shocking phenomena.

That combo made Hard Case Crime the perfect venue for this book. I also loved the paperback I grew up with as a kid, for that reason, Joyland has come out in paperback.”—Stephen King

Secretary of State, Ken Bennett, came to the library this week to officially hand off grant funding for new equipment.

The $10,250 grant was awarded through the Federal Library Services and Technology Act and administered by the Ari-zona State Library, Archives and Public Records for the Insti-tute of Museum and Library Services.

The library will purchase tab-lets for new computer classes in the newly created classroom alcove. The program, titled “Social Hour and More” will of-fer iPad classes for photo edit-ing; various social computing apps such as Facebook and Pin-terest; downloading e-books,

audio books, and magazines; and job searching. Classes will begin in the fall.

The Arizona State Library awards these funds on a competitive basis to librar-ies in Arizona. The library staff also thanks the County Library District for furnish-ing the new classroom.

Secretary Bennett said, “this is really fantastic to get the technology into the hands of the community members.”

Many local officials attended

the reception, in-cluding Representa-tive T J Shope, Coo-lidge Mayor Tom Shope, Assistant City Manager Jill Dusenberry, County Librarian Denise Keller, Executive Director of the Coo-lidge Chamber of Commerce Lynn Parsons, and Li-brary Advisory Board members.
