Speakers Report by Lou Abbondanzieri
Our Speaker for October was Jeff Wyatt, D.V.M., M.P.H. Director of Animal Health
and Conservation for the DEC. He is in charge of restoration of the Sturgeon in the Gene-
see River. The project started in 2003 when 1000+ Sturgeon, about 4” in size have been
released into the river. The same amount have been released every year to date, and some
have grown to 4’ long. These fish have about a 95% survival rate and are a protected spe-
cies. If you catch one you are asked to take a photo of the fish and also it’s tag if it has one
before releasing it. If anyone should run across a dead one you are to call the DEC immedi-
ately and Jeff will come out to retrieve it. Studying these fish is important to the survival of
the species. Male Sturgeon can live to be about 100 years old. The females can live to be
150. They don’t start breeding until they are 20 years old. So, in 2023 they should be in the
river spawning and will be about 6’ long at that time. Sturgeon are bottom feeders and love
to eat Gobies.
Jeff also works on the comparison of pollution of the Genesee River and the Opeongo
River in Ontario. They test the blood of sturgeon and other fish to monitor the amounts of
pollution in each river. Jeff can be contacted at: 585-266-8222

Conservation by Keith LaFleur
A bill of interest introduced at the end of the legislative ses-
sion is to change the age for young big game hunters from 14
to 12. This is also a major editorial in the recent edition of
Grass Roots News from the State Council. The FWMA meet-
ing last month had an extensive discussion on the current deer
mgmt plan (2012 to 2016) as well as the next plan to be intro-
duced. The current plan is available at the DEC website. Top-
ics need to include age level for young hunters for big game,
strategies to reduce deer populations in high population areas
(Region 8 has one of the highest), an early muzzle loader sea-
son, the antler requirements issue (not shooting yearling
bucks), encouraging landowners to allow hunting, a restructur-
ing of the management areas (fewer and larger), and incorpo-
rating the impact to deer resulting from the Young Forest Ini-
tiative. Trout Unlimited Seth Green chapter is starting a youth
chapter as a pilot program at RIT. Interested parties should
submit a proposal for grant money to clean up or improve in
some way the conservation activities associated with the
Genesee River. There is money available through an Eastman
Kodak Co. fund. The NYSCC is urging sportsmen to comment
on a rulemaking change.
Hunting & Fishing by Jim Willer
Fall has crept up on us in a hurry it seems. First things first;
as of 10-13 the perch have begun to move into the bay and the
fishing seems to improve the colder the nights make the water.
This past week has seen a good number of eight to nine inch
fish arrive, but the larger fish are lagging behind. If this year
mirrors past years, the best fishing will be between Halloween
and Thanksgiving. Unfortunate as it may seem, this also coin-
cides with some peak deer hunting times. Best gear is an ultra-
lite or medium-lite rod tipped with an eighth ounce jig and a
minnow fished 6-8 inches off the bottom or a 2 hook crappie
rig also with a minnow. Jig color does not seem to make a dif-
ference. Be prepared for an extremely light bite at times. If you
feel any resistance, at all set the hook. Water depth has been in
the 18-24 foot range, but if you have little luck try deeper and
don't spend more than 15-20 minutes in a spot if no fish or
small fish are biting. Sticks and strings and bows and arrows, if
you are in the market for a new bow in the near future it might
be in your interest to look at the Elite brand. TOG[ The Outdoor
Group] has been marketing for less than 10 years, but is already
a major player in the hunting and target bow market. Two
friends who are avid bow hunters and owners swear they are the
best bows they have ever shot. Did I mention that not only are
they made in America, but are made here in West Henrietta on
John St. Last but not least, I need your WEIGHT SLIPS for big
fish. Put them in the work hour box next to the bar and do not
forget to bring your racks to the JANUARY meeting to be
measured. With the upcoming deer-gun season, please be care-
ful. If using a tree stand, use a harness. Good hunting, fishing
and be safe.
Euchre Season 2015-16 by John Turner Euchre Season 2015 -16 by John Turner Euchre - where

some. Euchre Season dates for this year are Nov 14th and

Come join in the fun. The club loves your support The winners

ringer, 4th Tam Agnello, 5th Jeanette Laraby

Hunting & Fishing by Jim Willer
You won the woodland lottery and bagged a deer! You took it to
good butcher or did it yourself, now what do I do with this meat?
When you cook almost any cut of Venison, you will have to add
moisture because almost all wild game is very lean. Everyone has
their own way of preparing wild game, and this is meant only to be a
guideline and will cover one of the largest cuts you will encounter;
the Roast. Actual roasting requires fire. What we do in our oven is
baking, not roasting. A properly done roast is done over an open fire
with constant basting with butter or oil. This is marvelous if you
have a spit and fire pit which most of us do not. A better word might
be barbecue, slow, low indirect heat in a covered grill. You can sear
the outside when you are beginning or when you are ready to serve,
but patience and low heat of 225-250F are your allies. Can't do it
outside? No problem. Bring meat to room temp and sprinkle with
smoked salt and resalt when ready to serve. Initial sear somewhere
between 450 and 500F for about 10-15 minutes then drop temp to
300F. Now is a good time to add spices or herbs to the outside of the
meat. This is also a good time to drape 3-4 pieces of bacon over the
roast and baste it with butter or oil. Now the tricky part, pay atten-
tion to the meat temp and pull roast from oven when center is 125-
135F. Do not over cook. That is the largest problem with cooking
wild game. Rest the meat in the pan for at least 10 minutes. If you
don't, all the juices [flavor] in the meat will run out on the cutting
board. Cut thin and enjoy!

BEER TASTING By Tom Taillie
Friday Nov. 6 6-9 pm
Come to the Club for the debut BEER TASTING EVENT!
Each person will get their own 6 pack of Craft Beer (but not too
fancy) . There will be a beer aficionado (basically a home brewer
that likes beer) present to explain what you are drinking and what
gives each one its own particular taste. Also, specially selected hors
d’oeuvres will accompany and compliment the brews of the eve-
ning. General swill will be available at the bar (not included in the
ticket) before and after the event to bring your palette back down
to its normal level. $14.00
Bills vs. Patriots Tailgate Party by Char-
lie Levey
The good news – the Bills scored 32 points – BUT – the Pats
scored 40. Crying at the bar was softened with two 50/50 raffle
winners claiming $185 and $86. The 88 who enjoyed 1lb NY
strip steaks also were treated to 16lbs of jumbo shrimp. The
bar was hopping with fans, feeding the register $740.75 while
munching on shrimp, salad plates and ample crunchy munch-
ies. Desserts brought by the attendees were awesome!!! In
short, a good time was had by all – except for the Bills.
A big thanks to co-chair Jim Dengal and committee members
Gary Palmeri, Gene Milella, Rick Gasbarre, Mike Birecree and
Jack Schenkel. Kim did an excellent job behind the bar insur-
ing none were left thirsty. A VERY SPECIAL thanks to my
wife Mary who helped with EVERYTHING – planning, shop-
ping, running the kitchen, serving - cracking the whip to keep
everyone on track. As always, Linda Dengal and Jenny Moss-
graber were there to assist joined with a helping hand from
Yvonne Polle. As hoping to celebrate a Bill’s victory, come to
Tailgate 2016 or 17 or 18 or 19 or …….
You never know!
Clambake by Kevin Parks
Thank you to all who attended our annual Clam Bake. It
was a beautiful day and many were able to even sit outside to
dine. Thank you to all the crew who worked so hard cooking
and cleaning and shopping; and a very special Thank You to
Chuck and Jan Vordham who were able to let us use St.
Stanislaus's cooler to store some of the product that we didn't
have cooler space for. The clam bake is a lot of work and in-
volves not just hours but days of work; and this crew came
together and made this event such a success and fun time with
great Live music.
Pizza Nite Pizza Night will be on November 13th and December 4th.
At 6 pm. Bring an appetizer or dessert to share and a donation
bucket will be there to help offset the cost of pizza so we can
keep this happening.
