We have deliberately curated our works to continue this narrative. Our increasing insight into the landscape and culture of New Zealand drives our relentless pursuit of its expression through the many artistic networks we maintain.

Using the word ‘design’ in isolation is too narrow to describe our business. We believe that design is inseparably connected to the processes of art and craft - art as a source of expression, and craft as in the shaping of materials. All of the artefacts in the essenze collection result from a mix of all three processes.

essenze seeks to carefully curate the collection and to communicate the stories of the designers and their passion for their work. We work with some of the most talented and inspirational characters from around the country, with workmanship that is refined, resourceful, sleek and surprising. Their “New Zealandness” arises from our culture and history, the use of local materials and the inspiration derived from the unique landscape – water, light, earth – our landscapes and in particular our forests.

In New Zealand, we are blessed with anabundance of coastline and beaches andthe sea is an integral part of mostKiwis’ (New Zealanders) lives, hearts andminds, providing a bountiful harvest inthe form of fish and shell fish.

Kina, the sea urchin, dweller of the rockyshore line. The Kina light is based onthese shells, the way the X shaped piecescreate lines over the surface is similar tothe repetitive form of the shell.

Another of the Coral's offspring, theFloral shares the materials and the basicstructure, but is a flowery evolution.

With the increase of curved forms in thestructure the lit inner faces become moreobvious the shadowed foreground.

Floral is more organic in look and feel,less geometric with curves adding to theplayfulness of the design, also evident inthe shadows thrown onto the wall whenlit.

For less formal, maybe even morefeminine settings, FLORAL is stunning.

HINAKI: 500, 900

The Hinaki is a Fish trap that was usedby early Maori, though often the name isused specifically for an eel trap.

They were made from woven vines, somein amazingly beautiful forms.

The first light David ever made in 1995was also shaped like this and calledHinaki.

FLAX: 800DAVID TRUBRIDGE

Harakeke is what the Maori called Flax.It is a versatile plant, with tremendousstrength in the fibres of its leaves.

For the Maori it was stripped and woveninto cord, its leaves were plaitedintricately to from Kete (baskets) andbasic containers.

The Flax light mirrors this layered,plaiting, with a spiralling rhythm andvessel like structure.

SWISH was designed as part of the flowfamily: a group of lighting combiningwood with polycarbonate in twisting,turning and swirling designs.

David was experimenting with thesematerials while at the California Collegeof Art as a visiting professor. He saw asolution for keeping the character of thewood while shielding the eye from thelight bulb, and retain flowing lines.

Swish is a delightful and playful pendantlight, suited to situations like over akitchen island. It can also be supplied asa table light for an occasional table.

The Ebb range of lights by DavidTrubridge explores the play between lightand shadow, form and motion.

The new range consists of four designs,Rise, Flow, Bounce and Swell andresponds to earlier Flow series. Thesependants are strong, graphic, dramaticpieces that suit domestic and commercialsettings.

Delicate cloud lighting forms float over,and mirror, island seat forms below, likethe puffy white clouds that sit over themany islands scattered across the pacificocean.

Aotearoa, the Maori name for NewZealand, means ‘land of the long whitecloud’.

The spiral is a universal symbol, and oneparticularly relevant to New Zealandwhere the ‘koru’ is a national symbol.

TANGLE STOOLCLARK BARDSLEY

Mathematical models of ‘orderly tangles’informed the twisting leg design of thisbar stool by Clark Bardsley Design. Clarkused a combination of digital andhandmade fabrication techniques tobuild the bar stool, which is produced byEssenze. The solid pine seat is CNCmachined to create the angles for thepowder coated steel legs. The legs doubleback on themselves using a speciallydeveloped wrinkle bending process. Aswell as creating a surprisingly light andstrong structure, the stool’s looped legsprovide a comfortable resting place forfeet without the need for footrests. Shipsflat packed -self assembly required.
