The Market for Diesel Locomotives in Australia/Pacific

Vehicle installed base/age structure The railway network in this region is characterised by long overland lines. A low degree of electrification led to a dominance of diesel traction among the locomotives operated, for which nearly exclusively diesel-electric traction is used. Almost 80% of the diesel locomotive fleet is operated in Australia and 20% in New Zealand. The diesel locomotives of the Fiji Islands only form a small part of the total fleet. Around 65% of the operated diesel locomotives are operated in mainline transport and 35% in shunting operation.

Since 1960, diesel locomotives have constantly been procured in Australia/Pacific. Procurement peak took place in the 1980s followed by a decline in procurements in the 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium. The installed base has an average age of around 25 years and is currently being rejuvenated and extended by numerous procurement projects.

Manufacturers/products/market shares In the last five years, Electro-Motive Diesel sold the most diesel locomotives in the region. A total of 25% of the vehicles were delivered by EMD. A further 20% of the diesel locomotives came from China and were manufactured there by CNR or CSR. Alstom sold a modified version of the diesel-electric PRIMA to Iran. A total of 100 vehicles have been ordered by the Iran state railway. GE Transportation was very successful in the region with the Evolution series, which will be delivered to Egypt.

Market volume and market development The current market volume for new diesel locomotives in Africa/the Middle East is around EUR 130 million per annum; for after-sales services, around EUR 200 million. This market development is influenced by the following drivers: Driver Brief description Importan

ce Trend

Transport demand An increase of the mining volume in the coal mining region, especially in the leading market of South Africa, will lead to an increased demand for traction in the long term. For this purpose mainly mainline locomotives will be needed.

Investment funds Funds for operation and vehicle procurement will increase. In Iran, Egypt and Algeria diesel locomotives are either currently being procured or there are concrete plans for their procurement. However, as the companies need investment funds in all segments of railway operation, the funds available are distributed accordingly.

Fleet structure The installed base, however, has a relatively low average age, in some submarkets of the region (e.g. South Africa and Iran) this average is higher so that SCI Verkehr anticipates an increase in replacement procurements in the coming five years.

Operational requirements

In order to increase transport capacity on existing lines, locomotives with higher drive power and higher availability will be ordered.

Infrastructure In the coming years network sections are increasingly going to be put into operation or old lines are going to be reactivated in the region. These projects include investment in infrastructure and traction.
