THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF PARISH CLERKS STEPHEN PLUMB - MASTER 2017-2018 The Master was born in 1958 in Bow in the heart of London’s East End. Having been baptised at the Eton College mission parish (St Mary of Eton, Hackney Wick), he and his family became part of the great diaspora from London to Essex. Stephen then spent the whole of his childhood and teenage years in Chingford, living just a stone’s-throw from “London’s” Epping Forest. Upon leaving school, he commenced an eighteen-year stint with Lloyd’s underwriters working in both the 1958 as well as the iconic Richard Rogers’ building. It was whilst at Lloyd’s that he started regular midweek worship in the City; firstly at St Helen’s Bishopsgate and thereafter at St Katharine Cree (where Stephen served on the GCC for some years). In 1995 he left Lloyd’s (“which had ceased to be fun”) to develop his music agency as well as performance opportunities. Having studied percussion whilst at school, he went on to play drums in the London jazz scene; broadcasting in BBC TV, Radio 2 and 3 as well as playing in all the major concert halls in the UK. Stephen is married to Angela, a midwife who trained at the London Hospital. They have four married daughters between them as well as two granddaughters. A Liveryman since 1995 of the Musicians’ Company (serving on the Jazz Committee), he is also a Court Assistant and Almoner of the Hackney Carriage Drivers’ Company, having held a London cabbies’ licence for twenty-five years. Serving as Chairman of the Society of Young Freemen in 1994/5, Stephen is a Past President of Aldgate Ward Club and a Life Member of Lime Street Ward Club. Stephen has been Parish Clerk of St Christopher le Stocks and a regular worshipper at St Margaret Lothbury since 2006. Stephen and Angela manage the Sidesmen’s team at their local parish Church, St James’ New Barnet. He is a member of the Prayer Book Society, Church Society and is Treasurer of St Albans Diocesan Evangelical Fellowship. Stephen’s interests are: Social and Economic history of London, Real Ale, English Numismatics, as well as being a Friend of Nunhead Cemetery where the mortal remains of the parishioners of St Christopher le Stocks are interred.
