Zonta International Foundation

ZONTA INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIES TO END VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROGRAM Globally, gender-based violence is the most pervasive and least recognized human rights violation. Rooted in inequality, it affects women of every race, class, culture, ethnicity, age and country. Zonta International strives to promote and protect the human rights of all women and girls and reduce the incidence of violence through the Zonta International Strategies to End Violence Against Women (ZISVAW) Program by:

Supporting prevention and advocacy strategies locally and internationally. Awarding grants to United Nations agencies or recognized NGOs for projects that seek to

change personal and/or political knowledge, attitudes and behavior contributing to gender-based violence.

Increasing awareness and actions related to preventing violence against women by encouraging Zonta club involvement in local and national advocacy initiatives and service projects.

During the 2014-2016 Biennium, two projects are being supported by the ZISVAW Fund:

Respecting the Rights and Responding to the Needs of Adolescent Girls in Niger Location: Niger Partner: UNFPA Funding: US$1,000,000 (7% administrative costs) Overall Objective: To reduce early marriage and early pregnancy in a critical mass of communities and departments in four regions of Niger. Expected outcomes: This project is part of a five year (2013-2017) global UNFPA Adolescent Girls Initiative. 25,000 adolescent girls will be reached over 2 years with 400,000 members of their community benefiting from increased awareness. Adolescents will:

Develop health, social, and economic assets.

Know their rights and be in a stronger position to defend them.

Be safer and have a measure of protection against violence.

Have the basic tools required to lead fuller lives as adults.

Be able to actively participate in the socioeconomic development of their communities.

Voices Against Violence: Non-Formal Education Curriculum for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts on Ending Violence against Women and Girls

Location: 12 Countries Partner: UN Women Funding: US$986,000 (7% administrative costs) Overall Objective: To prevent and reduce gender discrimination and violence against women and girls through non formal education and youth engagement and leadership. Expected outcomes: • Increased awareness and knowledge of gender based violence through non formal education

activities.

Increased engagement of young people in prevention of gender stereotypes, discrimination and

violence against girls and women through advocacy and peer education.

• Enhanced understanding of participants of the safety measures to deliver the curriculum.

• Action plans developed to roll out the curriculum by participants.

From: Colleen Groen Sent: February 24, 2015 7:59 PM

To: [email protected] Subject: Thank you

Dear Zonta Club of Brampton-Caledon,

In November I received an achievement award in regards to my grade 11 science. I

just wanted to thank your organization again for your generous gift and support. I would also like to thank your representative for coming to present the award to me- it was very nice to meet her. I have applied to numerous universities and I will use your award money towards my education. It was very interesting leaning about Zonta, as I

was not aware of this organization and the great support it gives to women.

Thanks again,

Lauren Groen
