CADENCES A cadence is a point of relative repose. Music is filled with such moments, which vary in l ength, strength, and import. Cadences may entail a breathing point in the melodic line, an ebbing of the harmonic flow, a respite from the rhythmic action, or all of these. They fulfill a function similar to the artfully timed caesuras in an effective orator’s delivery—they group, separate, emphasize, and dramatize ideas. The feeling of musical repose created by a cadence is often rhythmic—a longer note value, or a brief silence. (See Example 6-1.) Perhaps even more often a cadence is harmonic—a two-chord succession that conveys one of two messages: 1. “This is t he e nd o f so met hin g.” (a conclusive cadence) 2. “This pause is o nly moment ary .” (an inconclusive cadence) These messages appear repeatedly in the course of a musical work.
