1 Colour Your Life! By Ingrid Ortgies, IWC CHAIR Dear ladies, I am very glad to welcome all new members 2010/2011 of the IWC of Budapest. My name is Ingrid Ortgies, I have lived in Budapest since the beginning of April, 2009 with my husband. We thoroughly enjoy the variety of the Hungarian culture as well as the excellent food and the great selection of Hungarian wines. When I came to Budapest, a lot of colour has been brought into my life by the International Women’s Club. I find it exceptionally exciting to get to know people from all over the world — and the IWC offers this to me. Besides the fact that this club still performs much good for the destitute of this country, my goal and the goal of our whole board is to make the following points stronger in 2010/2011: - Interesting events for every taste (event, activities etc.) - Partner Pogram (with great bonus packages for our members) - Variety of charity projects As a valued member of the IWC of Budapest, I would be very happy even if you only support us with your membership and participation in our General Meetings. I invite you warmly to our next general meeting on the 27th of September, from 10 o'clock at the Corinthia Hotel. Colour Your Life!By Ingrid Ortgies, IWC CHAIR

Dear ladies,I am very glad to welcome all new members 2010/2011 of the IWC of Budapest.

Besides the fact that this club still performs much good for the destitute of this country, my goal and the goal of our whole board is to make the following points stronger in 2010/2011:

- Interesting events for every taste (event, activities etc.)

- Partner Pogram (with great bonus packages for our members)

- Variety of charity projects

As a valued member of the IWC of Budapest, I would be very happy even if you only support us with your membership and participation in our General Meetings. I invite you warmly to

our next general meeting on the 27th of September, from 10 o'clock at the Corinthia Hotel.

With hearty greetings,

Ingrid Ortgies

A New Year With IWC2010/11By Sally Momtaz, IWC VICE CHAIR

It is an honor for me to be one of the board members, presenting the club goals and yours as well as a part of it, creating brand new creative ideas, making best decisions, adding values to each IWC member and making everything easy and enjoyable for you in order to serve your needs and expectations.

I hope each of you enjoyed the summer and back full of energy and inspiration ready for very special year full of fun with International women club, I would love to see you all at IWCA General Meetings, Events and Activities.

Our pleasure to get through the entire club members requirement, all the fun comes towards you with the shades of the autumn winds.

Enjoy the season...

The Pottery StudioBy Jutka Fischer

The summer I arrived in Budapest  in 1999,  I was only going to stay for one year.  A grant from my regional Arts Board back in the UK had enabled me to bring my most essential pottery equipment, to work here in a studio, to see how a different culture might influence  creative processes. Eleven years later, and I am still here!

Before coming to Hungary, I lived most of  my life in the USA and England, where I did my BA degree in ceramics, in London,  and later a postgraduate diploma in Arts Management. I worked for over two decades as a practising potter, exhibiting my ceramics both nationally and world-wide in galleries, museums and shops. I also taught in a variety of places, including hospices, prisons, adult education centres, and schools.

But I was, and still am, interested in the wider social context of art, and how engaging in a creative activity can enhance and change people’s  lives. For instance, a married couple, Pip and Julie, who used to come to pottery evening classes in Sussex, are now happily running a quality gift shop in Sussex, where they make their own pots in the back. Pip used to be a crab fisherman, working in the Newhaven fleet.

Another life-enhancing moment was when I worked as an artist-in-residence at an art centre in Surrey, where we had

organized a 6-month programme of how to reach the most people in the area with creative activities. One of the targeted groups was a youth club, where most of the teenagers had never been to an art gallery. We organized  pottery days where they could try throwing pots on the wheel, and also a “raku” day where pots are fired instantly, instead of the usual two-day cycle. We had set up long trestle tables at their club, with biscuit fired pots for them to glaze and decorate. They were mostly on rollerblades, and would whizz by, quickly choose and paint a pot  and whizz off again. But when it came time open the kiln, where the pots were glowing with white hot molten glaze, they were transfixed.

Artist-in-residence schemes, which have been going in the UK for a long time now, are a brilliant way to introduce people to the magical possibilities of creative expression.

Back in Budapest, as well as doing my own ceramics, I have also been running courses for adults and children, where I hope to convey my enthusiasm about pottery to my students, some of whom have been coming for several years, and some even end up doing a degree course themselves, back home.  A recent move to larger premises -the Pottery Studio- means we have more space and can offer even better facilities.

We are having OPEN DAYS at the studio on the weekend of  October 9-10, from 10am-5pm each day, where student’s work will be on display, as well as my

own, and where visitors can have a go at trying a simple hand-built pottery piece. I do hope you will be able to call by and see what we do.

IWC BoardI welcome you in the new club year. I hope you had a great summer time and you are looking forward a fun filled IWCA year. During the summer I was working on to put together a survey to find out what is your opinion about our club life, what would you like to see in the future of the club. It would be a great help, if you could fill in this questionnaire either online or in the General Meeting and return it to me. I find it important to learn about your ideas. With your assistance we can form the club the way you would like to. I’m glad to tell you that during the summer coffees nine new members joined our club. I hope we will attract more new members during this year. Therefore we are working on a new IWCA leaflets to promote our club. We also try to participate on occasions that give us opportunities to introduce IWCA to the expatriate community. As the first occasion of this club year at the end of August we took part in the Newcomers’event at the AISB. Many ladies came to our table and were interested in receiving information about IWCA. I hope some of them will join us soon.

As you know our club year starts from the 1st September and we kindly ask you to renew your membership. You can do it by paying in cash at the General Meeting or as a new option we would like to introduce the payment by bank transfer. You can transfer your membership fee to the following account:IWCA ING Banka/c.No. 13700016 04520012

The yearly membership fee is 15.000 HUF.In the description of the bank transfer please indicate your name and membership fee. If you choose this option, please inform me by e-mail that your contact details remain the same or it has been changed.

In order to keep an up-to-date membership record during the club year and making sure that you receive your Ribbon and electronic newsletter, please inform me about any changes in your contact details. You can either send an e-mail or hand it to me at the General Meeting during the registration.

I wish you a very active and interesting club year. If you have any suggestions, ideas about our club and membership, I’m looking forward to hearing it. Please visit me at the registration table at the General Meeting.

We all know how waking up on a sunny day can lift our spirits, while a grey, rainy day may make us feel down. Fortunately, for the majority of us these shifts in moods will not affect our ability to cope with daily activities. For a minority group though this is exactly what can happen.

During the winter months, some people may suffer from symptoms of depression. This is due to SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The onset can be immediate or appear gradually. These symptoms tend to lessen as spring arrives and stops during the summer months.

Symptoms may include:

• Fatigue

• A drop in energy level

• A tendency to oversleep

• Difficulty concentrating

• Craving foods high in carbohydrates

• Weight gain

SAD can be linked to the lack of sunlight during autumn and winter. Those working long hours inside office buildings, without windows may suffer all year round. It is thought that the lack in sunlight and short daylight hours can cause an imbalance in the brain. Younger adults and women are thought to be at higher risk, although SAD may develop at any age.

Increased exposure to sunlight can significantly improve these symptoms. So now spring is around the corner and things will start to get a little warmer, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy more daylight. Taking a long walk outside at the weekend or even just getting off the bus a few stops earlier and walking the rest of the way to work, could help you get rid of that SAD feeling.

However, if at any time you feel your depression is severe, please don’t delay. Make an appointment to see one of our doctors promptly and get help.
