As a company we have grown ourcustomer base with ongoing, and pastprojects including schemes running inexcess of 60-100 weeks. We have a largebase of local builders and constructioncompanies, who know they can rely on aprompt, safe and professional scaffoldingservice and have repeatedly requested ussince we commenced trading.

Our current portfolio contains largerprojects incorporating the new homessector (Leach Homes, Wheatley Homes,Regal Homes and Beverley Homes),major refurbishments to listed buildings(City & Country Construction and CompleteRestoration) and in the current climatewhere residents are unable to relocateproperties but are happy to remodeltheir existing abode, we are finding thepercentage of loft conversions hasincreased dramatically (Scott McCabeAssociates). We strive to ensure that weare able to cover every aspect of ourindustry and such determination hasresulted in us providing access systemsto motorway schemes, railway andairport projects (Bowmer and Kirklandand Jackson Civil Engineering)

We provide national coverage, working asthe preferred scaffolding supplier forNew World Builders (and Vision Express).

Whatever the size of theproject, myself and the team here at V&Soffer a personal, and professional serviceworking with the customer, and assistingwith the fine tuning of the scaffold. Thiscan be from our initial site survey orduring the contract works by completingvariations or adaptions as the projectprogresses. We aim to pass on ourexperience to save the customer costs,but without compromising safety.

All our operatives are CISRS registeredand CITB trained with all current healthand safety legislations adhered to withregular in house tool box talks to reiteratethat the safety of both public andemployees is paramount to our reputation.Individual training in slingers and signalling,and fall arrest at height training are keyissues, with individuals trained in theseareas. Our main priority is to provide asafe and efficient scaffold service toenable the project to run smoothly.

There continues to be a high level offatalities caused by falls within theconstruction industry, according to thelatest Health and Safety Executive (HSE)statistics.

Some 59% of construction fatalities – 23deaths – were caused by falls in 2012/13.Over the same period, 28% of reportedmajor injuries and a further 12% reportedover a 7-day absence are caused by fallsfrom height. In total, some 920 injuries inconstruction were caused by falls.

The law, Work at Heights Regulation2005, requires that employees and theself-employed undertake a riskassessment for all work at heights. Therisk assessment should then inform thedevelopment of a safe working methodwhich is planned, communicated toemployers and implemented in theworkplace.

A specific hierarchy of controls exists tomitigate the risks of working at height.In priority order, the following are to beapplied:

• Avoid work at height where it isreasonably practicable to do so.

• Where work at height cannot beavoided, prevent falls using either an

existing place of work that is alreadysafe, or the right type of equipment.

• Minimise the distance and consequencesof a fall, by using the right type ofequipment where risks cannot beeliminated.

Around 1 in 5 deaths in constructioninvolve roof work. Some of those killedare specialist roofers whilst others areinvolved in routine maintenance, likegutter cleaning and minor repairs.

Of those deaths and major injuriescaused by roofing, falls from the roofthrough openings, off edges or throughfragile surfaces are the main causes.

Many of these accidents would havebeen prevented through the use ofsuitable equipment and if those doingthe work had been given adequateinformation, instruction and training.

Safe access to a roof requires carefulplanning, particularly where workprogresses along the roof.

Typical methods to access roofs are:• General access scaffolds;• Stair towers;• Fixed or mobile scaffold towers;• Mobile access equipment;• Ladders; and • Roof access hatches.

Falls from roof edges occur on bothcommercial and domestic projects andon new build and refurbishment jobs.Many deaths occur each year involvingsmaller building operatives working onthe roof of domestic dwellings.

The height of roof safety

Paul Haxell, Chair of the Institution ofOccupational Safety and Health (IOSH)Construction Group outlines the risks ofworking at height and what mitigationsteps should be taken…

Sloping roofs require scaffolding toprevent people or materials falling fromthe edge. You must also fit edgeprotection to the eaves of any roof andon terraced properties to the rear, aswell as the front. Where work is of shortduration, (tasks measured in minutes),properly secured ladders to access theroof and proper roof ladders may be used.

Falls from flat roof edges can be preventedby simple edge protection arrangements– a secure double guardrail and toeboard around the edge.

All roofs should be treated as fragile untila competent person has confirmed theyare not. Do not trust any sheeted roof,whatever the material, to bear the weightof a person. This includes the roof ridgeand purlins.

Fragile roof lights are a particular hazard.Some are difficult to see in certain lightconditions and others may be hiddenby paint.
