There are many specialized agencies created by the United

Nations working for labor, health, food and development. These

agencies are geared towards the promotion of peace and

welfare of nations.

The balance of power theory on the other hand is closely

parallel with the scientific notion about order in the universe. It

presupposes that if one nation grew too powerful, others would

form a coalition to counteract it, thus returning it to its proper

orbit and restoring equilibrium once again. The existence of

regional cooperation, peace treaties and the end of the `cold

war’ have proven this.

The United Nations played an important part in bringing new

states into being. It may not be clear as to what extent the U.N.

can influence the balance of power in the Asia Pacific and the

Middle East, but the U.N. organization will be forever needed in

aid of these newly independent states in their effort to be

counted in the Free World, and by all nations - for freedom from

wants and fear, and above all in our quest for lasting world

peace.

The UN and World Peace

How important is the United Nations Organization in the

attainment of world peace, security and prosperity? After the

League of Nations failed to achieve its purpose, the U.N. was

organized and took effect with its charter on October 24, 1945.

The League of Nations, the forerunner of the United Nations, may

have failed to remedy the world socio-political and economic

problems, so that the U.N. Organization’s success and why we

are celebrating it is significant. Based on the principle of

sovereign equality, the United Nations admit all peace loving

states, large and small for membership. Greater international

cooperation among nations and a full conviction among the Super

Powers is necessary in dealing with conflicts confronting the

nations and the world.

The maintenance of world peace and security is a primary

responsibility of the permanent members of the U.N. Security

Council. The concurrence of the council is necessary to decisions

on substantive questions like preventing the recurrence of

international global conflict. Within their common interest, the

Security Council and the rest of U.N. members conclude the

peace treaties and end wars. The maintenance of global order of

peace and security is continuously sought after by all member

countries.

The significant event was a time of remembering the American Missionaries-

founders of Central Philippine University who committed their lives to fulfill the

mission of building a spiritual, intellectual, moral and cultural institution; a school

that would influence Christian faith and character, promote scholarship, research,

and community service.

Reverend Dr.William O. Valentine who founded the Jaro Industrial School (later to

be called Central Philippine College and presently, Central Philippine University) is

among the American Missionaries laid to rest at the Philippine American Cemetery.

Dr. Valentine established the school on October 1, 1905 and became its first

principal from 1907 – 1915. The students worked half of the day and studied the

other half. Until his death on February 2, 1928, Dr. Valentine who was dedicated to

his mission work taught about the dignity in labor.

A fellowship breakfast followed at the PAC Pavillion.

Other events for the 108th Foundation Day were also held at the campus. A

lecture entitled Voices from the Past was held at the EMC Conference

Room. Dr. Elma S. Herradura, former Vice President for Academic Affairs

and co-author of the Scientia et Fides (First Edition) and author of the

book’s second edition, was the speaker. Students, faculty and staff and

alumni were truly enlightened by Dr. Herradura’s lecture. An exhibit at the

Henry Luce III Library was opened by Dr. Teodoro C. Robles and Prof.

Evangelica D. Padernilla, former Principal of the CPU Elementary School.

In the afternoon, students, faculty and staff participated in the CPU

General information Quiz at the Alumni Promenade-Concert Park. The

CPU Republic held a special program honoring and thanking the selfless

and dedicated faculty as part of the celebration of National Teachers Day.

The 108th Foundation day Committee is co-chaired by Engr. Dimpna C.

Castigador and Ms. Crista S. Huyong./ Cyrus A. Natividad
