What a great time of year! We are still blessed with warm days to cruise the lake or sit on the veranda for a dining experience. It’s also a time to be with family and friends and remember the good things! Let the Club be your gathering place! Give us a call and we will make room for you and your family this holiday season. If you want to stay at home and have us prepare all the food, give Kelsey Kraus a call and take advantage of our holiday take out menu.

Don’t forget to make your reservations online today for our annual Thanksgiving Day Feast, the Tree Lighting and Members Guest Holiday Party, Santa Brunch, Lighted Boat Parade and New Year’s Eve Gala. We anticipate these events will not only be fun but have great attendance.

I hope that you have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!

WiNTer prepArATONHarry Smith, Marina and Aquatics ManagerIf you have not already done so call today and let us schedule your winter service. Don’t wait for the first freeze to make a decision!

Below are a couple of key facts and other suggestions about different alternatives for winterizing your boat. • Heaters-Affective but must be checked. Heaters cannot be installed and then forgotten! Heaters must have electricity to function properly and just be tested! • Antifreeze/Full engine and water system winterization- Safest and most affective and no doubt the best way to protect your systems. • Light Bulbs - NOT AN OPTION!!! • Battery Charger/s-If you don’t have one get one! Chargers can help give you longer life of your batteries and will also allow the bilge pump to function properly.

Here are some other items to also consider during the off season. 1. Oil change, impeller, spark plugs, etc. 2. Fiberglass repair a. Spider cracks b. Resealing hatches, windows, etc. c. Swim platform dings 3. Shore cord inspection (cut the power first)

Email me now to schedule your service so your boat is ready for next season - [email protected].

Marina Manager reminder by bOAT uSVisiting Your boatThe First Line of Defense Against a Dockside SinkingIf you need a reason to visit your boat more often, consider that the cost of repairing a boat that has been underwater, even briefly, is usually about 40% of its value. Besides having to pay the deductible, the skipper typically loses the use of the boat for several weeks while it is being repaired. At least twice a season, inspect any fittings above or below the waterline that could be letting water into the boat. All too often, skippers rely on bilge pumps to bail them out when they can’t visit their boats. The pump fails and the boat sinks. If you can’t visit your boat regularly, consider using a buddy system with other boat owners to watch each other’s boats.

October saw more sailing events at PYC following the success of the September Peninsula Cup Regatta. The raft-up, with the Power Fleet Committee, was held on October 7 and Fellowship Series races were held October 8 and 22. The Leukemia Cup Regatta and Pumpkin Cup Junior Regatta were October 14.

There are still two more events planned for November. The Fellowship Series Races to be held on November 5 and 12. The fresh fall breezes are great for practicing sailing strategies for speed and boat placement. I hope to see a good representation of PYC boats on the starting line for these last two sailing events of the fall.

Your Sail Fleet Committee is continuing its follow-up to the 2017 Peninsula Cup Regatta. Premiere, of course, is to work hard on winning back the Yacht Cup Challenge! In addition, a short survey has been sent to all registered skippers and volunteers soliciting suggestions on how we can make the Regatta event even better for 2018. Your suggestions for improvements in the Regatta or the PYC sailing program are always welcome as well.

Hopefully you have also noticed the Sailing link on the home page of the NEW PYC website. This link is a quick and easy way to go directly to the PYC sailing calendar and also view highlights of other sailing activities at the club. You can also register to be a crew member or host your boat for needing crew. A great way to get other sailors involved!

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS Rear Commodore, John CampIt is time to think about winterizing your boat or to just assure it is ready to operate in the cooler conditions. At PYC, Harry Smith can help you with any preparations you may need for this season’s boating. Contact Harry at the Ship’s Store with any questions.

Two of the largest boating events at PYC are now behind us - The Poker Run and the Peninsula Cup. They both set new records for power and sail participation this year. We had lots of volunteers for each event. Participation and donations to charity also set new standards for next year.

For the Power Fleet: The Poker Run made donations to local charities again. The contributions from the Poker Run Silent Auction were greatly appreciated. This year, the club Raft-Ups have become very popular again. The autumn raft-ups had as many as 15 vessels participate (all sizes of power and sail). PYC provided food and beverages for everyone (thank you Bruce and Team). Consider joining the next raft-up. Whether a seasoned or novice participant, everyone is welcome. The raft-ups are managed so that the first time participant can join the fun with assistance from the raft-up coordinator.

For the Sail Fleet: The Peninsula Cup hosted boats from Clubs all over Lake Norman. This year there were donations to charities and scholarships from the event. The Fellowship Sailing Series is coming to a close. There are two more races this month. Please feel free to join the events. With fair winds, we will have very competitive races.

Finally, do not forget about the Lighted Boat Parade in December. It is a great event to be in and also a great event to just watch. This will be the last chance to earn points toward the Ed Sherrard Power Boater of the Year award for 2017. The award is now in its third year. Check out the Plaque in the Show Case downstairs. Your name could be next on the plaque.

Remember to watch the Club calendar. PYC is a year-round club focused on all our members. We have lots of events scheduled year round.
