The 2017 Sailing season is now history so I thought a quick summary of our racing activities would be appropriate. In 2017 Peninsula Yacht Club hosted two Regattas, the Peninsula Cup and the Leukemia Cup, and two series of races, the Lake Norman Keelboat Council (LNKC) Icicle Series and the PYC Fellowship Series. A total of 17 boats represented PYC in these events with 9
boats regularly racing. PYC skippers also participated in Lake Norman Yacht Club’s (LNYC) Ice Bucket Regatta, July 4th Regatta and Labor Day Regatta. Nine PYC boats were racing in Outrigger Yacht Club’s (OYC) Wednesday Night Series. In 2018 I hope our planned racing and social sail/raft-up events draw additional PYC sailors out on the water.
The first racing opportunity of the 2018 season will be the LNYC Ice Bucket Regatta on Monday, January 1st at LNYC. This one-day regatta is open to all boats with either a LNKC PHRF Certificate or a Portsmouth rating. Check the LNYC website for details (www.lnyc.org).
The Ice Bucket Regatta will be followed closely by the Lake Norman Keelboat Council Icicle Series hosted this year by Outrigger Yacht Club (note the correction from the December ‘Sailing Scene’). The scheduled dates for this series are January 13, February 3 and February 24 with a make up day on March 3, if necessary. The OYC website (www.outriggeryachtclub.org) has the details for this series.
As always, the Crew Board is available on the PYC website. The Crew Board can be used to solicit crew for your boat and to list your availability to crew. The Crew Board can be accessed from the PYC website home page by clicking ‘Sailing’ and selecting ‘Crew Board.’ Follow the instructions to let others know of your crew needs or availability. Most all the skippers would love to introduce new people to sailing, as would I.

Happy New Year to All - It is hard to believe that 2018 is here! As we look back at 2017 and look forward to opportunities awaiting us this new year, we should realize we have much to be thankful for. As the incoming Commodore, I have many to thank for their mentoring and friendship, especially those who have served and continue to serve Our Fleet Committee. Our mission in 2018 is simple - to represent the members of the PYC through creating a connection between club members,
owners and staff in order to: (1) Promote Effective & Consistent Communications, (2) Foster Boating Education & Safety, (3) Preserve/Continue Our Traditions, and (4) Enhance and Integrate the Social & Yacht (Power & Sail) Experience that will lead to new and everlasting friendships. And let’s be sure to have FUN while serving our mission!
When we look back at our accomplishments in 2017, we reflect on Team successes such as a financially successful Poker Run and a Peninsula Cup Regatta that stands second to none, where we made significant charitable contributions to the Levine-Dickson Hospice Center in Huntersville and the Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center. Over the years, the Fleet Committee has led these major events which have recently taken on a life of their own, requiring ‘committees’ as opposed to the ‘1 or 2 person’ team in past years. As in 2017, we will be looking to manage these major events through various committees, leveraging each other on the Fleet Committee along with those in the Social Committee, and with other Volunteers from our Club Membership. Additionally, we saw a renewed interest across our members who attended our Spring & Summer Raft-Ups and Fall Draft-Up (due to inclement weather in October) - It was great to see so many new faces and boats - both Power & Sail. And let’s not forget the additional efforts of our Sail Fleet Committee members who also successfully coordinated the Fellowship Series Sailing Races and expanded their purview to Junior Sailing activities as well - a job well done by this dedicated group of Sailing professionals who I look forward to working with this year.
Not to be undone, I will partner with our Publicity & Boating Education Chairperson, David Goodman (also known as Our Honorary Commodore) to further expand our relationships with the US Sailing Hall of Fame, The Safe Boating Council, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. David has worked tirelessly to build these relationships that have become pivotal in positioning the PYC as the ‘Premier’ Yacht Club in the region. Together, we will seek out new opportunities to provide the PYC with additional exposure both locally and at the national level.
One of the most significant affairs held at Our PYC each year is the Commodore’s Dinner & Dance Ball scheduled for Saturday, February 18, 2018 - Themed as “A Night in Tuscany”. This event is held each year to honor our outgoing Commodore and to introduce our new Commodore and Fleet Committee members. Additionally, all new officers and committee members are recognized at this special occasion, filled with an exquisite dinner, dancing, and good times. Remember, you don’t need to be a Committee member to attend this special event as it provides a wonderful opportunity to have an enjoyable evening with your significant other and to make new and everlasting friendships with other club members. So come one and come all, and make this event an exciting and extravagant affair for all.
In closing and on behalf of our Fleet Committee and general membership, I would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to Commodore Michael Miller for his leadership, commitment, and dedicated service to the 2017 Fleet Committee. I hope to carry the torch and our traditions forward in the coming year, and with the support/assistance from our Vice Commodore, John Camp, and Rear Commodore, Vince Watkins, lead this esteemed committee to celebrate even more successes in 2018 that will result in new opportunities for our general membership. And remember, Let’s Have Some Fun along the Way!
