Parish Stewardship

Stewardship Spotlight - Third Sunday in Ordinary Time January 21, 2018

The theme for today’s first reading from Jonah is evangelization leading to repentance and salvation. Jonah was charged by God to warn the city of

Nineveh to repent or be destroyed. He warned the people and they repented, so God did not destroy the city. Jonah acted as a prophet of God and

saved over 100,000 people. We live in a society that performs much worse actions than in Nineveh, and we are baptized to be priests, prophets,

and kings. How many of us, however, proclaim God’s word in an attempt to change our society and perhaps save some wayward souls? I venture

to say, and speaking for myself, very few.

Now the other part of the story of Jonah that most everyone knows is him being swallowed by a large fish (some say a whale). He was swallowed

by the fish because he was fleeing by boat from God’s command that he prophesy in Nineveh. God troubled the boat to the point that the crew

threw him overboard. After the fish spit Jonah out at Nineveh, he did wat he was commanded to do, as told in the first reading.

The other part of the story that even fewer people know is that after Nineveh was saved by Jonah’s prophesying, he was angry at God for not

destroying the city! He was so full of self-righteousness that he had personally condemned the whole city. Fortunately, God’s mercy is far more

powerful than our petty judgments. This part of the story should make us ask ourselves if we are more interested in seeing the people we judge as

being bad or evil punished, rather than being converted and saved. Look at the parables that Jesus gave us showing the joy in heaven over

repentant sinners.

Are we content to count on our own salvation and leave our brothers sisters to their own fates with no attempt at intervention from us? Will we

ultimately be held accountable for the people whom we did not even attempt to lead to God? In the book of Ezekiel (3:18), God says “If I say to

the wicked, ‘You shall surely die’ — and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade the wicked from their evil conduct in order to save their

lives — then they shall die for their sin, but I will hold you responsible for their blood.”.

We are stewards of God’s Word, his Mercy, and his Kingdom on Earth. Are we willing to accept God’s command that we make disciples of all

nations (yes, even our nation and society) to save them from ultimate destruction?

All human life is sacred because from its inception it involves the creative action of God. God alone is the author of life from its

beginning to its end therefore no one can take it upon themselves to directly destroy a human life. (CCC #2258)

Each year we host a Banquet for Life to celebrate Life of all ages and to raise awareness of our Medical Center. This is our main

fundraising event. The program includes a banquet dinner, musical accompaniment, a raffle, a video presentation, and a Keynote

Speaker. This year’s speaker will be Mary Ann Kuharski, a founding member of PROLIFE Across AMERICA. The purpose of this event is

to communicate with our supporters about our progress and to raise donations for our clinic. Our community has made our mission

possible through prayers, donations, and services. Our intention is for this annual event to be a fun celebration of Life, so all are welcome

and invited to attend the Banquet. If planning to attend, please contact us at A Woman’s Answer Medical Center before January 29, 2018 at

(CIC #2258)
