SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Tuesday: St. Vincent; Saint Marianne Cope Wednesday: St. Francis de Sales Thursday: The Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle Friday: Ss. Timothy and Titus Saturday: St. Angela Merici; Blessed Virgin Mary

Fr. Gerard’s Corner In the story told about Nineveh, the emphasis is on God’s boundless willingness to forgive. Nineveh had been one of Israel’s greatest enemies. Even though the Book of Jonah was written three centuries later, Nineveh was still regarded as one of the most remorseless and cruel oppressors of Israel. In reality, they never changed their ways. But Jonah imagines what would happen if they had. No matter how horrible their behavior had been, if they repent, God will forgive them. The forgiveness of God has no bounds. It is not just given to Israel after each time they repent; it can even be given to their most terrible enemy. It can be given to anyone who turns to God.

God changes course on the promise to smite Nineveh. This disappoints Jonah, for Nineveh is a sworn enemy. But God would rather forgive than punish. It is difficult to resist punishing those who have done us wrong. Jonah can’t accept this. But this is exactly what God is willing to do.

Last week we heard John’s account of the call of Andrew and Simon. Today we hear the noticeably different version from Mark. Andrew and Simon are now fishing. This gives Mark the opportunity to have Jesus refer to their profession when he calls them, “ ‘Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men’ ” (Mark 1:17). Discipleship demands both things—following Jesus and sharing the good news with others. Fr. Gerard

JON 3: 1-5, 10; PS 25: 4-9; 1 COR 7: 29-31; MK 1: 14-20

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” With these words, Jesus invites Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to follow Him and be His disciples. We often speak of the subtleties of trans-lation. In the origi-nal Greek in which St. Mark wrote his Gospel, a better translation would be, “Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” It is the beginning of a process.

We are called to that same process. It is not as if it happens quite suddenly. It happens over time, and it is a progression. If we are to be “fishers of men,” we are to be evangelizers and disciples of the Lord, and we are to represent what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God.

Of course, Simon and Andrew “abandoned their nets and followed him.” It may be more difficult for us to “abandon our nets” so to speak, but it does prompt us that we need to make major changes in our lives if we are going to follow Jesus. Simon and Andrew, and then James and John, were common men, normal people. They had no theological credentials nor did they have any special status in the world.

Most of us are similar. Jesus did not select them (or us) for who they were. He called them for what He could do through them. It is the same with each of us. Yes, we are called, but in order to really fulfill our calling we need to follow and trust in Jesus.

St. James—St. Leo Catholic Community is under the pastoral care of the Eudist Fathers, or Congregation of Jesus and Mary. We owe our name to Saint John Eudes who founded the Congregation in France in 1643. The Eudists currently operate in 15 countries, most of which are in the developing world. Evangelization, mainly with the poor and the youth, is our primary purpose, as well as formation to ministry in the

training of diocesan priests and lay ministers. Our motto is “To Serve Christ and His Church.” For more information visit: http://www.eudistsusa.org
