Salt for the Weak
Boy was He mad. Jesus, that is. The scripture lessons in the third week of Lent begin with the giving of the law, the Ten Commandments, and end with a teaching about God
and anger and true worship. And yes, Jesus was angry—not sinfully so, but rightfully so! The necessary transactions of currency exchange for travelers to pay temple tax and the procuring of animals for sacrifice had turned into a full-scale rip-off, and as always, who suffered the most, but the poor! Jesus is always on the side of the poor, the oppressed, the down-trodden, those on the fringe. His ministry revealed a graphic shift from rule-based to relationship-based. Have we made that shift yet? Are we rending our hearts because of ungodly relationships? Are we lending hands to improve relationships? Are we mending lives through mending relationships? This is our challenge for these forty days and for all the days of our lives. Now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation. Have a blessed week.
For Your Reflection
* Someone once said: “God have us Ten Commandments, not Ten Suggestions!” Realizing that they are merely the “tip of the iceberg” for our examining our conscience, can I name all ten without looking? Are there known areas of sin in my life that the commandments don’t seem to cover?
* In what ways is Jesus Christ crucified a “stumbling block” and “foolishness” to some people of today?
* Are you someone who demands signs? * Are you someone who always must “figure it
out?” * What do you think was Jesus reason for
overturning the moneychanger’s table in the temple area? Can you think of a possible parallel from today?
* Re-read the last two verses of the Gospel (Jn 2:24,25). Do those lines give you comfort or discomfort? Why?

Estate Gift to Your Parish—Have you ever considered leaving your parish a gift as part of your will planning? Please consider this idea as a way of supporting us long after you are gone. This isn’t just for the wealthy, but for all. If you would like more information about leaving a legacy gift, contact Sandy Klaus, Emmaus Pastorate Business Manager, (563-928-7200).
LENT
How are you at evangelizing? For this season of Lent, try your hand and heart at evangelization by: * Inviting/bringing someone to daily or weekend
Mass. * If someone is struggling, ask if you could pray for
them (and do it!). * Pick up some missals/hymnals at Church and
take them to someone. * Gather up some Lenten
prayer cards and pass them out to anyone and everyone!
* Watch the mid-week check-in online with someone new.
* Be a disciple! Be an instrument.

Audio Recordings—If you don't have a Mending Our Hearts book, have a hard time seeing or reading the daily devotionals, or just want someone to pray with you, there are audio recordings posted daily on the St. Mary Facebook page. Please feel free to share them with friends and family.
Reconciliation Preparation—A fruitful celebration of Confession (Reconciliation) centers on examining your conscience. Because this is hard to do alone, examination sheets are available in the back of every church for you to take. Spend some reflection
time as you prepare for either our “Parking Lot” reconciliation services or the opportunities that are scheduled during the week. A thoughtful examination of conscience will surface patterns and areas to take to the Lord for healing and insight. This is one of the meanings of “Rending” your heart. Develop true sorrow for your failings and ask Jesus for the strength to make needed changes in your life. His divine mercy will free you and strengthen you. Pick up your EXAMINATION of CONSCIENCE SHEET today.
Keys to a Transforming Lent—Participate in weekend worship at one of the Emmaus Pastorate Parishes so you can be formed through the themes of preaching. Set aside a little time to reflect/pray through the reflection questions in the bulletin. Make an effort to cut down on the chaos in your home. That may mean less TV, computer, music, social activities, running around… Make some sacrifice each week. Remember, a sacrifice is something that hurts—”no pain, no gain.” Notice the first two are about prayer and the last two are about lifestyle changes...
Have you ever made a “Holy Hour?” Visits to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament are a tremendously underutilized devotion. Stopping in to any Catholic church to pray before the Tabernacle is a special way of inviting and adoring Jesus in the midst of your week. We stop in to see a friend or relative and say “I just wanted to stop in and say ‘Hi!’” Why not do the same thing to your Savior? Most of our Emmaus parishes offer a Holy Hour each week. What is it? What do I do?
Simply come and place yourself in the presence of the Eucharistic Lord. It might be the only time you are silent (and awake!) during the day. Be attentive to your thoughts and feelings and ask Jesus to give you peace and calm. This is a great time to pray with Scripture, using the passage listed in the bulletin each week—possibly preparing the Gospel for the upcoming Sunday. Other spiritual or devotional reading is also appropriate, and it’s always great to pray the Rosary. We are so blessed to have Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament in our Churches— they are never empty, and we are never alone. Take the time. Make the time.
See the weekly Liturgy and Activity Schedule for weekly Adoration Schedule.
Is your family expecting a baby? Congratulations! Father John will bless expectant mothers at the March 21 weekend Masses. This is part of the Emmaus Pastorate’s observation of the 25th anniversary of St. Pope John Paul II’s encyclical The Gospel of Life. We look forward to celebrating with you. In addition, the pastorate will host a prayer service reflecting on the gift of life at the March 25 Eucharistic Adoration at 7:00 p.m. at St. Mark in Edgewood.
RENDING… This weekend we offer another PARKING LOT RECONCILIATION. This is an extraordinary opportunity to receive absolution.
Normally we celebrate individually with the priest with a more personal experience with the
opportunity for a bit of spiritual direction. The Church offers this option especially in trying times, such as our COVID-19 experience. A reminder that those in
the state of serious (mortal) sin should come to individual confession within the year or next reception of the sacrament. Not only are we
reconciled to God but also to the Church, who represents the Body of Christ here on earth. More
detailed Examination of Conscience sheets are available in the back of all Pastorate churches, as well as online. It is in taking some quiet time, with the aid of questions, which helps us to look at our
“thoughts, words and deeds” in a prayerful way. This prayerful preparation gives us insights into ourselves
and our actions that’s not normally possible in our day-to-day jam-packed lives. For senior citizens it
can also be a time of great consolation as you reflect on the landscape of your lives and seeing all you
have for which to be grateful. Make every effort this Lent 2021 to celebrate Reconciliation at one of the
parishes, or at individual times scheduled in the bulletin. God bless your Lenten journey!

Lent is a time for us to change our lives and grow in holiness. Through the three pillars of Lent—fasting (giving up), almsgiving (giving to others) and prayer, we endeavor to develop a closer relationship to God. Each week, write down your fasting, giving and prayers. Place your sacrifices into the jars in our Lenten garden and watch how it grows over the next 40 days. Here are some ideas for each of the pillars. Let's grow together. Prayer—Participate in one of our small group discussions; say a rosary daily; participate in weekly Stations of the Cross; pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet; read a Bible story; learn a new prayer Fasting—Fast from electronics; fast from sweets; fast from snacking between meals; fast from TV; fast from complaining; do things the first time you are asked; skip a meal today; drink only water Giving—Choose one toy to donate; donate clothing; collect change to give to charity; donate extra to your parish this week; donate to food pantry; write a kind note to someone; help at one of the many church events
The next food pantry/community meal date at St. Mary will be March 17. Daylight saving time starts on March 14 so the pantry will go back to being open from 3:00-6:30 p.m. and the community meal will be served from 5:00-6:30 p.m. The menu for the meal will be meatloaf, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and St. Patrick day cupcake.
For the week of February 27, we light the candles for Walter Whittle.
Church Cleaning—All parishioners are invited to clean the church on Thursday, March 11, at 8:00 a.m. We will have all the supplies you will need. We just need you to help us prepare for Easter. Thank
you for considering this task. Parish Life Meeting—Thursday, March 11, at 6:30 p.m. in Saint Joseph Parish Hall. We will be discussing ways to rend. lend, and mend using our talents as a parish community. Please plan to attend.
