Repent, and Believe in the Gospel.

Jesus picks up where St. John the Baptist left off. "Repent" in the Greek means a change of mind. Isthere any area of our life where we need to change our minds? Is there any area of our life that needs change? It won't happen without some change of mind. We are held back by false notions of God and the life that He has given us. Themind is the battlefield.

Truth is necessary to grow in love, to grow in God. God is truth. Jesus said that He is "the Way, the Truth, and the Life."All things are resolved in Him. We may try to solve our concerns and desires elsewhere, but if we're honest, doesn't it alwayscome back to Jesus? Are we satisfied with something else? In fact, things in and of themselves don't satisfy. We were made forlove.

I couldn't sleep the other night, so I picked up this book called Hagiotherapy that a Croatian friend had given me forChristmas. I opened to a section on Agapetherapy which I was interested in. Here is the first paragraph that I read:

A basic trauma found in all patients is a lack of love. This is like having no ground to stand on. Love needs another togive himself, the security that death can be survived. Receiving love means being valued by another, not for any par-ticular reason, but just because I am, because I am an incomprehensible being, a deep well of existence, a gift fromthe Creator of the world to the world and to each human being, and because I bring special, unique gifts to the world, which no one else brings. Our deepest desire is to be loved.

(Diagnosing the soul and Hagiotherapy, Tomislav Ivancic, 424)

Too many never realize this fundamental truth of human life. We were made for love by Love, because "God is love." We shouldrepent of any other notion that doesn't support this.

Surely, we have all experienced sin, either sinning ourselves or being sinned against. Sin is a lack of love. Sin would rein-force the thought that life isn't about love, but rather about competition or striving or self-aggrandizement. We can bitterly resignourselves to such a fate, accepting the negative interpretation of life. Love conquers this disposition through its melting heat. Haveyou ever felt grumpy, and then had a friend with the courage to challenge you with a smile and a laugh, melting your mood intoone that is more carefree? This is an example of how love conquers evil.

St. John of the Cross said, "Where there is no love, put love, and you will find love." Let us take the courage to love oneanother and bring love into a chilling world. Global warming is a concept that many scientists accept as truth. Global chilling, as inthe time when "... because of the increase of lawlessness, the love of many will grow cold" (Mt 24:12), is not acknowledged bysecularism. We are living in such a world without God, my brothers and sisters, where lack of faith, hope, and love is celebrated. We are called to be the light, the fire that gives opportunity to know the Lord, the opportunity to know that we are made for love.

Words from Fr. Ed
