PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Harmony Day This year’s theme ‘Our diversity is our strength’ reflects our school philosophy about being inclusive, showing respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. We celebrated the day by respecting the students within our community who come from 53 different countries. Congratulations to the Harmony Day poster competition winners. Riverbank PS and The Ponds HS ANZAC Day Service Our ANZAC Day service will be held with The Ponds HS on Thursday 28 April at 11.30am in the HS hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Following on from the combined service Riverbank will be holding a dedication ceremony for our new memorial stone to be located near the flagpoles. Our School Leaders will also be attending the Riverstone-Schofields RSL sub-Branch 2016 ANZAC Day Dawn Service. Choir Our Senior Choir performed beautifully at Michelle Rowland’s Harmony Day morning tea. Thank you to Ms Edwards for leading the choir. Easter The Easter Hat Parade was once again a happy successful occasion. We saw many creative designs on hats, baskets. Thank you for attending and supporting the students. They were very excited to welcome our special visitor the Easter Bunny. Thanks to Lesley, Jodie and Kristy from the P&C and the many families who contributed to the raffle prizes. Riverbank’s strong anti-bullying stance acknowledged on the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence On Friday 18 March RPS joined 930 000 other school students around Australia to say ‘No’ to all forms of bullying and violence. We acknowledged the day with lessons from our anti-bullying program. 5/6R presented a strong message during their assembly performance. We are proud our students at Riverbank have a strong voice in shaping the future of our school. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) NAPLAN is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. It has been an everyday part of the school calendar since 2008. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling and numeracy. The assessments are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full week in May. Students in Year 3 and Year 5 will be sitting the tests next term. In NSW, NAPLAN is administered by the Board of Studies. The tests will be conducted across Australia on the same days for all students according to the following timetable: NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas of:

• Writing 10 May • Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) 10 May • Reading 11 May • Numeracy 12 May •

Student Success Kaya A (3/4O) has been selected in the Sydney West Boys Soccer train-on squad. Kaya has an upcoming training session to attend where the final team will be announced. We wish him the very best. We also wish Joshua T (5/6T), Lachlan P (5/6K) and Lee B (5/6K) all the best for their upcoming trial for the Sydney West AFL team. Good luck, boys! School fees and contributions The fees for Term 1 are due. The accounts were sent home earlier this term and a number of accounts are still outstanding. Reminders will be posted this week and prompt payment would be greatly appreciated. Parents in financial difficulty should speak to me. Please remember you can pay on-line securely, through the school’s website. Coffee meetings From Term 2 morning coffee meetings with the Principal and P&C President will resume. The meetings are informal and are held in the staffroom on a Monday directly from 9am lines. It is an open invitation to parents and community members who cannot attend P&C meetings. The coffee meetings allow for parents to be updated on school and P&C initiatives. Wear Blue for Autism Awareness Month - Friday April 8 April is Autism Awareness Month. We are requesting all students wear Blue on Friday 8 April, for a gold coin donation to support the Autism Advisory and Support Service and to spread awareness around Autism. This will be our mufti day theme for the last day of Term 1. School Photos Our School Photographs will be on Tuesday 3 May (week 2). Order forms will be sent home next week. Finally Congratulations to our Kindergarten students on completing their first term at school. Their academic and social progress over the last ten weeks has been wonderful. They have discovered the many routines of school life, become more independent and are enjoying their weekly visits to the library in preparation for borrowing next term and made many new friends. Most importantly I enjoy seeing their happy smiling faces every day. As we come to the end of the Term, I would like to congratulate our students who have seamlessly transitioned into their new school environment or new class with positive and inclusive attitudes. I would also like to extend my thanks to the teaching and administration staff for their dedication and hard work. The staff have worked tirelessly this term to support the growth of 260 new students this year and who continue to ensure all opportunities are available for the students. Calendar update School disco planned for 29 April will now be held on 9 September. Have a wonderful and relaxing holiday. Students will return to school on Wednesday 27 April in full winter uniform. Lost Property We are finding a lot of lost property around the school grounds every afternoon. As the mornings become cooler and the days are gradually warming up, we are finding a lot of jumpers and jackets being left out in the playground. Could you please ensure that all the children’s property is CLEARLY labelled, so we can promptly return their property. Winter Uniforms Our uniform shop will be open on Monday 11 April from 9am – 3pm (first Monday of the school holidays) or alternatively you can pre-order and pick up on that day or on April 26. This year our senior boys will commence wearing a tie as part of their winter uniform. In 2015, students in Stage 3 presented a motion to our School Parliament requesting the senior boys wear a tie during terms 2 and 3. This motion was unanimously passed and then presented to the P & C.

Kindergarten Corner It’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of Kindergarten’s first term at school! It has been a busy term of ‘firsts’ for many of the children and they particularly enjoyed working with their 3-6 buddies to create an Easter hat for last week’s Easter Hat Parade. Kindergarten even became drivers and pedestrians last week, as they participated in the RAPS road safety awareness program. The Kindergarten teachers are looking forward to sharing your child’s progress with you, at next week’s Parent Teacher Interviews. Mrs Jessica Gibbs Assistant Principal- Early Stage 1

Riverbank Public School Learning Support Team The prime function of the learning support team is to ensure that the needs of students in the school are being met by considering individual student need, teacher need and whole school planning. Special Education Handbook for Schools THE LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM – OPERATION AND RESPONSIBILITIES Effective Learning Support Teams (LSTs) play a vital role in supporting both students and their teachers. The learning support team focuses on addressing the learning needs of students by ensuring that collaborative planning and programming occurs, that effective implementation strategies are in place, that available and appropriate school resources are being utilised, and that monitoring, assessment and reporting strategies have been agreed upon. A practical and direct way for parents and carers to be involved in their child's learning is through the learning support team. Parents and carers know most about the child's abilities and needs in a non-school setting, and their insights can add significantly to the work of the team. Together teachers and parents work to support students and achieve outstanding outcomes through planning, expectations of success and positive school culture. The learning support team at Riverbank Public School comprises of: • Assistant Principal (learning support team coordinator) • Principal • School Counsellor • Learning Assistance Support Teacher (LaST) • A representative from each stage in the school When possible classroom teachers attend meetings of the LST when the wellbeing and/or academic progress of one of their students is being reviewed, or when they wish to refer a student to the team to better address the student’s specific needs. Learning support team meetings are held Monday recess. The meetings: • discuss needs • share information • share resources • set goals • devise strategies • decide on future action. The learning support team process may result in: • request for or supply of additional background information • collaborative planning / teaching • support for the classroom teacher through allocation of additional teacher time • targeted interventions/programs designed to address specific learning needs • modified classroom practice and/or • individualised planning. A learning support team meeting may lead to: • establishment or review of a personalised learning and support program • further assessment • application for, or referral to, support services external to the school. Should you require further information about the Learning and Support Team please contact your teacher. RPS Learning Support Team

CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS

This week our senior choir were wonderful in representing our school at A Harmony Day Morning Tea, hosted by Michelle Rowland, Federal Member for Greenway. This event marked the first time that the choir has performed this year, and they were met with an abundance of praise from community members and from Michelle Rowland herself. We congratulate the students on a very positive first performance and for their outstanding behaviour on the day.

As we come closer to the end of the term, I would like to thank all the students involved in our extra-curricular performance groups for all of their hard work and to the teachers for their dedication. We are looking forward to another great and busy term.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN

WOW, what a fantastic effort Riverbank! All our hard work, shopping, collecting stickers and sticking them to sheets really paid off. We collected 512 sheets by October 2015 for the Woolworths Earn and Learn program and look at all these amazing resources that can be used across all grades and in every aspect of the students’ learning. Some of these resources are conversation cubes which we can use in our circle times, 80kg of air dry clay for fabulous sculptures and big books that we can read as a class.

A BIG thank you to all who supported this program and I cannot wait to see how many stickers we will collect this year.

SCHOOL BANKING

School banking for 2016 is off to a great start! Thank you to all the students who are bringing in their bank books on Tuesday's and supporting the program. Every deposit made through school banking helps to raise funds for Riverbank PS. Please ensure that all details are filled out in your bank book with the correct money attached. Unfortunately, if the bank book is not filled in, we cannot process your deposit. Additionally, it is important to send in the bank book, not just the deposit slip and money in an envelope. Many of you are currently eligible to redeem from the Term 1 prizes, so be sure to check how many deposits you have made on the reverse tab in your bank book- 10 deposits entitle you to a prize! Prizes are ordered weekly and will be sent to you through your classroom teacher. As always, we welcome any parent/carer support to assist with the weekly banking process. It is simple to learn and a great way to support Riverbank PS. Please email the banking team on [email protected] if you are able to help on a Tuesday morning.

Since we established school banking mid-2015, we have raised over $1,100 for Riverbank PS. Thank you for your continued support of the school banking program. We look forward to seeing more money raised throughout 2016!

29th March 2016

Dear Parents/Caregivers, Once again this year, Riverbank Public School will be encouraging all of our students to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC). This is a wonderful opportunity for you to interact with your child in a meaningful way and for them to experience a variety of quality literature throughout the year. The challenge is now open and runs until 19th August 2016. To complete the K-2 challenge, your child can listen to a book, participate in a shared reading of a book or read part/all of a book independently. Students will be given the opportunity to experience PRC books in class and in library lessons (Ms Whelan will add these books to each child’s reading record). Our library contains many PRC listed books (all of which are labelled as such) and has dedicated sections for these books, making them easy for students to locate. Local libraries also usually provide this option.

Students (or parents) need to log in to the PRC website https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html

using the student’s DoE username and password (see below):

DoE username DoE password

NB: It is the responsibility of parents to ensure that each child’s reading record is entered

and complete, on the official PRC website by the closing date of 19th August 2015. On the reverse of this note is a factsheet for parents about the Challenge. For further details, please visit the PRC website. If you have any questions, please contact Ms Whelan in the Library or via the school office. Ms K. Whelan Mrs J. Brown Teacher Librarian Principal

Premier's Reading Challenge Tips for parents and carers for participating in the Challenge

Find out the name(s) of your school’s Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) coordinator(s) and how they

plan to administer the Challenge.

Familiarise yourself with the PRC website. Logon is not required to view the Booklists or read the

Rules.

Visit the new Premier’s Reading Challenge Support website. It allows you to search for information about the PRC and also contact the PRC team.

Set reminders for Challenge opening and closing dates in your and your child’s calendar.

Find out your child’s logon details. For public schools, students’ logon will be the same one they use to

access computers and the internet at school.

Assist your child to borrow books from the school or local library. Listen to your child read and talk

about the story/ characters/ information. Read to or with your child if she/he is participating in the K-2

Challenge.

Help your child to add books to her/his Student Reading Record regularly. Log on and go to: Student

Reading Records > enter books by ID or Title or Author. To enter a Personal Choice book, select the

‘Add a Choice Book’ tab > enter part of the title or author > select ‘Search’. If your book appears as an

option, select ‘Add’. If it does not appear, scroll down to the ‘Still can’t find a book?’ section > enter the

full title and author > select ‘Add’.

Check your child’s Challenge history – log on to the website, go to Student Reading Records and

select tab ‘My Information’. If Challenge participation at a previous school is not listed, contact your

child’s PRC coordinator.

Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if: Your child has any difficulty using her/his logon details to access the PRC website.

You are concerned that your child’s name is spelt incorrectly in the PRC website.

Your child’s online Student Reading Record (SRR) must have the required number of books recorded

to complete the Challenge by the student closing date. School PRC coordinators have an extra week

to validate the SRR. Only students with a validated SRR are eligible for a certificate.

In the final weeks of the Challenge, log on regularly to the website to check the status of your child’s SRR. Contact your child’s PRC coordinator if you are concerned your child’s SRR has not been

validated.

Important notice about bus safety

Unfortunately this year there has been two separate occasions where students have been

injured by a car after alighting from their bus on the way home.

Both students walked in front of the bus and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Thankfully neither student was seriously injured, however the situation could have been

much worse.

The road safety message for all students is:

Wait until the bus has gone and then use a safe place to cross the road.

In light of these recent incidents, schools are asked to remind and reinforce safe road user

behaviours in and around buses with their students.

The following quality teaching and learning activities can support teachers and students:

Early Stage 1 -Stage 2 primary students:

The key message for this age group is to:

Always hold an adult’s hand and Use a safe place to cross.

Information to educate parents and carers is available from the Centre

for Road Safety’s “Keeping our kids safe around schools” newsletter

inserts.

Stage 3 primary students:

Safety Town bus video

Bus safety teaching and learning activities

Stages 4-5 students:

Happy Easter to everyone and I hope you had a wonderful time over Easter.

Thank you to those who attended our P&C Meeting on the 23rd March 2016. It was wonderful to see new faces. Remember these meetings are a way you can assist the school and find out what is going on around the grounds between P&C and the school itself.

Thank you to Mrs Jodie Brodie (Events Manger) and Mrs Carolyn Mitchell for all their time and efforts in preparing for the Easter Raffle and our Mother’s day stall for 4th May 2016.

Dates and events over the coming months will be Red day in conjunction with the Canteen, Mother’s Day stall, Disco term 3, and Movie night Term 4. Letters will go home with volunteers needed for these events.

Our Easter Raffle was a huge success with over $2100 raised to go toward Air Conditioning. Thank you to all the families that have supported our goals.

We also raised over $700.00 for the Harmony day morning.
