• Believed that blacks should focus their energy on education and learning a skill so they could become employed and self-supporting

• Created Tuskegee Institute that was supposed to be a model for black self-improvement through education

• Invited to speak at the International Exposition in Atlanta

• Speech made blacks cry and whites cheer.

• Graduated high school valedictorian and enrolled in Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee

• Helped found the Niagara movement which became re-structured as the NAACP.

• Popular writer, scholar, and leading Afro-American intellectual of the time
