2015 SPRING FLING FESTIVAL 2015 Spring Fling Update - Dateline Saint Paschal Baylon, Highland Heights 41o31’58.49”N, 81o28’38.36”W, elevation 1,019 feet. T minus 12 weeks and counting. As we look over the mounds of snow piled up in the parking lot, it can be a little difficult to envision a festival midway up and running. To supplement Father Lane’s “good weather” candle we have added a festival meteorologist, on loan from NPR “Car Talk”, Luke Audavindo who has assured us that the snow will eventually melt. Unfortunately, specifics are not his strongpoint. Good news to report on the entertainment front. Two of three possible outdoor bands have been booked. Velvet Shake will perform on Friday evening followed by That 80’s Band on Saturday evening. For those country and western aficionados, get those denim jeans and boots out because we are looking at a country and western band to play from 5-7PM on Saturday evening. As always, new faces are welcome to our core committee. Information on individual volunteer opportunities to staff the various venues will be provided as we get closer to the start. Contact Bob Mastrangelo via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 440-442-2854 for additional information.

STEWARDSHIP REPORT

FROM THE PASTOR’S PERSPECTIVE

1st SUNDAY OF LENT: Don’t you love Mark’s “no

nonsense,” direct approach of sharing Jesus’ message? “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” If you are not paying attention, it goes quickly by. This is “to the point” and a direct command of action for all of us. The two verbs, “repent” and “believe” remind us of the tremendous responsibility of being a Christian – constantly turning, renewing, changing so that we can live the Gospel message a

bit better. Once again, we are given a chance to take these simple, powerful and difficult words and make them come alive in this Lenten journey. Just as the Spirit drove Jesus out into the desert, the Spirit will guide us in this process. Blessings and good luck, and don’t forget: we do this together. LENT EVENTS: Here are some kind reminders:

• Rice Bowls: If you haven’t had a chance yet, please take a rice bowl from around the perimeter of the church to practice almsgiving – sharing with this important work of Catholic Relief Services. During Lent we sacrifice and place that sacrifice for the lives of others. Return your Rice Bowl on Good Friday or Easter.

• Stations of the Cross: Each Friday night at 7:00 p.m. practice this devotion.

• Parish Mission/LUKE LIVE – with babysitting this year – February 28 – March 4 – devote these days to your own personal retreat; either in the morning after the 9:00 a.m. Mass or weeknights Monday – Wednesday, 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Fr. James DeLuzio is on the cover of the bulletin and is noted for his popular presentation. He is also on YouTube. Fr. James will also visit our parish school and Eymard Spiritual Group.

• Diocesan Night of Confession: Wednesday, March 4, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. at a church near you! The churches of the Diocese of Cleveland open their doors to share God’s gift of grace and reconciliation.

• TAIZE Prayer: Wednesday, March 11, 7:00 p.m. This style of prayer comes from a village in France name Taizé. It is a mantra style, similar to the songs we already know like, “Jesus Remember Me” or “Eat This Bread.” There are many other melodies. We have moments of singing these mantras, moments of silence, a few readings, and all in the setting of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. Join us for this holy hour.

LUKE LIVE – PARISH MISSION: We are pleased that our Welcome Committee will “open” the parish mission on Sunday, March 1, after the

NOON MASS, with a pizza, salad and soup reception. More details – plan on attending and meeting Fr. James and blocking off your days and nights for this event – February 28 – March 4. CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL 2015 – “Open Your Heart”: Last week you heard me preach at every Mass of the needs of our annual appeal to help those most in need in northeast Ohio. Our diocese is hoping to raise 11 Million Dollars to have these funds matched, dollar for dollar, to support $110 Million Dollars worth of services around the diocese. We are the largest Catholic Charities – and the oldest in the country. Please, for the first time, or once again, place your pledge before the Lord in an act of love and sacrifice, sharing the equivalent of one meal to another person. If every parishioner gives generously (may I suggest $20 – the price of most meals today), we will

make our quota and then also be able to assist in the vital works of charity. May God bless you in your stewardship and care, remembering those words, “When you gave to the least of my brothers and sisters, you gave to me!” Let us continue to pray for each other! In Christ our Eucharist,

This is the final weekend of the in-pew portion of the 2015 Catholic Charities Annual Appeal. This is not a special collection; rather, the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal represents the chance for all Catholics to make a significant pledge, payable in installments, to Catholic Charities in order to support its mission of a society that stands united in its support of the “least among us.” Many parishioners have received a letter from Bishop Lennon requesting their support. If you have not received this letter, please respond to the in-pew commitment process today! If you have received the mailing, please respond to it. There is a box on the in-pew envelope to indicate that you have responded by mail.

There is joy in giving and there is joy in serving. Over 399,000 people from every suburb and city in Northeast Ohio benefit from Catholic Charities programs and services each year. Please consider a generous gift to the Catholic Charities 2015 Annual Appeal, and please pray for the success of this important Appeal.
