Journeying with Jesus: Lenten Season

Lent is a time for evangelism and for true conversion – a

time for growing through repentance, fellowship, prayer, fasting, and concentration upon our baptismal covenant. We are to be signs of God’s kingdom in this world. The themes of repentance and preparation for sharing in the death and

resurrection of Christ are basic to those preparing for baptism and confirmation and to the whole body of

Christians who will renew their baptismal faith during the Easter Season. Lent is thus not giving up something but

rather taking upon ourselves the intention and the receptivity

to God’s grace so that we may worthily participate in the mystery of God-with-us.

The biblical metaphor for Easter spirituality is found in baptism. The baptized life is a life that is lived in the pattern of death and resurrection. . . . This is a daily, existential, moment-by-moment experience as we choose in this or that situation to die to the sins for which Christ died and choose the life of the Spirit for which

Christ was raised to a new life. Robert E. Webber, Ancient-Future Time: Forming Spirituality through the Christian Year

The Church’s One Foundation

(W&C #277)

The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her Lord; She is His new creation By Water and the Word:

From heav’n He came and sought her To be His holy bride;

With His own blood He bought her, And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation,

Yet one o’er all the earth, Her charter of salvation

One Lord, one faith, one birth’ One holy name she blesses,

Partakes one holy food, And to one hope she presses,

With every grace endued.

‘Mid toil and tribulation And tumult of her war,

She waits the consummation Of peace for ever more’

Till with the vision glorious Her longing eyes are blest,

And the great Church victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in One,

And mystic sweet communion With those whose rest is won:

O happy ones and holly! Lord, give us grace that we,

Like them the meek and lowly, On high may dwell with Thee.

RESPONSIVE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you alone, have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are justified in your sentence and blameless when you pass judgment. You desire truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence,

The River Brian Doerksen | Brian Thiessen | Michael Hansen

To the river I am going Bringing sins I cannot bear

Come and cleanse me come forgive me Lord I need to meet You there

In these waters healing mercy

Flows with freedom from despair I am going to that river

Lord I need to meet You there

Precious Jesus I am ready To surrender ev'ry care

Take my hand now lead me closer Lord I need to meet You there

Come and join us in the river

Come find life beyond compare He is calling He is waiting

Jesus longs to meet you there He is calling He is waiting

Jesus longs to meet you there

Our God Saves (Brown / Baloche)

In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son

In the name of the Spirit, Lord, we come

To call on our Savior to fall on Your grace

In the name of the Father, in the name of the Son In the name of the Spirit, Lord, we come We're gathered together to lift up Your Name To call on our Savior to fall on Your grace

BAPTISMAL RENEWAL (From Living Faith)

Renunciation and Affirmation (turning to the West with arms

extended)

Trusting in the gracious mercy of God who has been faithful to us in all generations, do you turn away from sin, renounce all evil powers in the world which rebel against God or oppose God's rule of justice and love? I renounce them. Do you renounce the ways of sin which separate you from the love of God? I renounce them. (turning to the east with hands receiving) Do you turn to Jesus Christ, accepting him as Lord and Saviour, trusting in his grace and love? I do. Do you desire, in dependence on the Holy Spirit, to mature as a Christian in the church, to seek the guidance of Christ as you listen for his Word, to celebrate his death and life at the table he provides, and to engage in his mission to the world? I do.
