~ ANNOUNCEMENTS ~
Services of Healing - June 14
A Healing Service is a worship experience that focuses on our individual needs for restoration of mind, body, and soul. This corporate wor-ship service invites participants to receive an anointing (blessed oil placed on one’s fore-head made in the name of God) through the ancient rite of laying on of hands after time spent in prayer with the pastor/leader. The ser-vice is more meditative and self-reflective and seeks to unite the healing power of Christ with our wounded selves. People attend the service often for themselves or for a loved one whom they are concerned about. Renown Chaplain, Pr. Brent Hoy-Bianchi will lead us through this special worship day. There will be no Holy Communion on June 14.
Shared Harvest Our shopping list for June:
Peanut butter (41 jars) Chili (41 cans)
Canned vegetables (82 cans) Toothpaste (82 tubes)
Toothbrushes (82 brushes) Try to bring by June 21 (okay to bring by the 28th). Assembly is at Holy Cross at 1pm on June 28.
Congratulations to these LCGS Members who won prizes in the
ACTIONN raffle: Debbie Leone, Matt Leone, Carolyn Cramer, and Cara Paoli. ACTIONN thanks all of you who purchased tickets and donated prizes. ACTIONN has also received grant funding through the Ford Foundation and will be hiring a full time Organizer position. If you’re inter-ested in applying, see their website for more information (actionn.org).

June Guest Pastors Today, June 7, Pr. John Handrich, a familiar face, will preach at all services. We also congratulate our high school graduates. Summer begins for Good Shepherd as the choir and Kids Community are on hiatus. On June 14, Pr. Brent Hoy-Bianchi will preach. He is an ELCA pastor, a member of Good Shepherd and is currently the chaplain at Renown Medical Center. We will have a full Service of Healing (see other page for details.) There will be no Holy Communion. On June 21 Pr. Mike Zurek is a former member who was confirmed by Pr. Ruth Hanusa in the early 1990’s. He has become a pastor and is called to a church in Visalia. His family still lives in Reno and he was thrilled to be asked to come back and preach here! On June 28, Susan Palwick, a UNR English Professor will preach. She preaches regularly at the Episcopal church in Sparks and some will remember her from Lenten worship and Faith formation classes last year.
TODAY’S READINGS IN THE BIBLE Genesis 3:8-15 This section of the Yahwist narrative in Genesis 3 probably functioned as an etiological (explains an ori-gin) myth about the Israelite rejection of the Canaanite goddess Asherah, who was imaged as a snake in a tree. That public nakedness is shameful indicates something of the mores of the Israelites who told this story. Many ancient cultures tell a story in which the woman is at fault for human unhappiness. The creature—a snake with legs—may have been imagined as a kind of primordial dragon. The explanation for human sorrows and sins as told in Genesis 2:4b—3:24 contrasts theologically with the later composi-tion found in the positive poem in Genesis 1:1—2:4a. 2 Corinthians 4:13—5:1 Paul writes to the Christians in Corinth of his confidence in the resurrection: our incorporation into Christ means that we will share in his destiny, which is eternal life with God. Our current condition is called “our outer nature” and “an earthly tent.” The quotation (v. 13) is from the Septuagint of Psalm 116:10. The “house in the heavens” fits with the Greek Platonic idea —not one original to Judaism—that what is truly “real” is the ideal that is beyond this earth. Mark 3:20-35 Mark’s intent in this section is to establish the authority with which Jesus acts to heal, teach, and gather disciples. The idea is that human power must come from either God or Satan. “Satan” became in intert-estamental Jewish angelology the leader of the forces of evil. The accusation of insanity was to the origi-nal readers identical with that of demon possession. Beelzebul, a reference to an episode in 2 Kings 1, is the name of a Philistine god of Ekron, originally Beelzebub, altered in ridicule to become “lord of the flies.” To blaspheme is to dishonor the divine. Part of the disquieting picture that Mark gives of Jesus is his disregard for his natural family. The doctrine of the perpetual virginity of Mary, popularized by Jerome in the fourth century, is not based on Mark, who narrates nothing supernatural about Jesus’ birth and speaks of Jesus’ siblings. The reference to blaspheming the Holy Spirit is obscure but perhaps indi-cates an honoring of the Spirit of Christ.
Welcome Pr. Scott Trevithick
The Governing Board is pleased to announce that we have hired Pr. Scott Trevithick to serve as our ¼ time mid-week pastoral minister. He will be in the office on Tuesdays and will:
Provide pastoral care to all members of the congregation including hospital visits, funerals and pastoral counseling
Participate in the key leadership including attending Governing Board meetings as scheduled
Lead mid-week Bible studies teaching the word of God (Tuesdays at Noon and 5pm)
Provide support to the staff by attending weekly staff meetings and as requested by key staff
If there are other pastoral needs in the week, he will be on call to assist Good Shepherd. It is our plan that Pr. Scott will be with us until our permanent pastor is in place sometime this sum-mer. Pr. Scott will not be here on Sunday mornings but we have scheduled guest pastors for each week who will share the good news from their perspective.
