The Madison Jazz Society will present a jazz band that has been in existence for more than 60 years on Sunday, February 24, from 1-4 p.m. at the Coliseum Bar, 232 E Olin Avenue, Madison. The concert will feature the Original Salty Dogs jazz band.

MJS President Linda Marty Schmitz said, In 1947, a group of Purdue University students formed the Salty Dogs Jazz Band. In the earliest days of jazz, Indiana was the place where the great bands played, recorded and set down their musical roots. The Salty Dogs Jazz Band was born from that tradition and they continue today as living testament that great hot jazz will live forever. Today, with the most of the same personnel from the 1950s and with 60+ additional years of experience and polish, they are acclaimed as one of the foremost traditional jazz bands in the world.

The roots of the Salty Dogs run deep to the early jazz musicians of the 1920s - Hoagy Carmichael, King Oliver, The New Orleans Rhythm Kings, Jelly Roll Morton, Bix Beiderbecke, Hitchs Happy Harmonists and Louis Armstrong. They all recorded in Richmond, Indiana and many of their sidemen settled in the Chicago area.In the 1950s and 1960s, many of these players were still active and performed side-by-side with members of the Salty Dogs. The list includes some of the greatest names in jazz

The Madison Jazz Society is a non-profit, all volunteer organization formed to encourage the performance of and education about jazz. It annually sponsors six concerts and a jazz festival that attracts jazz fans from all over the nation. The group sponsors the broadcast of Riverwalk: Live from the Landing on Wisconsin Public Radio and awards grants to school music departments to enhance their jazz education programs. MJS was formed in 1984 and will sponsor its 25th annual Capital City Jazz Fest in April 2013.

We see a trend developing: the Chicago area has an ever-growing number of jazz festivals! The jazz fest plays an important role during this era of specialized media, in that it is perhaps the single best way to expose the general public to jazz music. Thats why we wanted to compile a list of a few local & regional festivals with in driving distance to Chicagoland so you can start marking your calendars and planning ahead. There are a few milestones on the festival list this year, of course the 35th annual Chicago Jazz Festival and the 46th annual Elmhurst College Jazz Festival are the oldest on the list, but the Englewood Jazz Festival is moving into its 14th year and the Frank Mantooth Jazz Festival at New Trier turns 30 this year! At a time when the economy is struggling, it is good to know that the determination to present jazz in a festival atmosphere is still alive and well.

Grammy Award winning Zydeco musician C.J. Chenier

has been having a good time doing what he does for

more than three decades. He was still in his teens when

he started out, playing in funk bands in his hometown

of Port Arthur, Texas. C.J.s life changed when Clifton

asked his sonwho had played saxophone and keyboards

before picking up his dads instrument, the accordion

to join his Red Hot Louisiana Band. My mother told

me that he was always saying that when I get old enough

he was going to try to get me in his band, says C.J. I

never thought it was gonna happen.

When that time did come, C.J. admits, he didnt quite

get zydeco music at first. I just didnt understand it.

It all sounded the same to me. Until I started playing

it. Then I was able to understand what was going on.

But every time I heard it my feet were tapping and my

head was boppin. It was such a fun music and the people

partied so hard that I fell in love.

By the time Clifton passed away in 1987, C.J. knew that

his lifes calling was to continue his fathers worknot

to play the way Clifton did but to bring zydeco into the

present. My daddy always told me to do the best I can

do in my style, he says. You master what you do. He

told me, Be yourself. Clifton Chenier already did his

thing. Im trying to just be C.J. Chenier.

FitzGeralds has been a gathering spot since it was built in the early 1900s. Up to 1925, the frame building at 6615 W. Roosevelt was a roadhouse used as a hunting lodge and sporting team headquarters. As more buildings rose along Roosevelt Road, the club was home to several nightclubs, the best-known being The Hunt Club, which flourished through the 1950s and early 60s--acts included Turk Murphy, Bob Scobey and Lill Armstrong. After the Hunt Club closed, the space became the Deer Lodge, complete with pool tables and a fortune teller.

Theatre and choral music at Chute Junior and Evanston Township High Schools were my start. I elected to major in music at Spelman College, Atlanta, GA. While my classmates had been studying since they were six or younger, I was enrolled in remedial classes and told I couldnt keep time. It was suggested I change my major. Working like hell, I made the jury honor roll 7 out of 8 semesters and graduated cum laude. I immediately landed a gig with Atlantas Theatre of the Stars and performed alongside Georgio Tossi, Michelle Lee and other celebs. However, my self-esteem was zilch, so I stopped for nearly 20 years. Venturing away from what was thought taboo in my home, I tried out jazz. My starch Christian family feared jazz/blues entertainers were bound to a lifestyle of drugs, sex and poverty, so in the Jones home Lawrence Welk and a glimpse of gospel were the order of the day. To that I finally said, hah! I was in love with jazz.

Biggest Obstacles you have faced in your musical career?Myself. Thoughts of not good enough, young enough, pretty enough and all that enough stuff got in the way. Heck, I decided to turn it around and work that much harder at loving and being the best Robin I can be and thats more than enough.

Greatest Achievements in Music to this point?I could say, touring Brazil or singing for President Carters inauguration, but actually it is hearing my big band members (Al Fooks and Jazz Unlimited) tell me my timing is impeccable) which aint bad for a girl who was told to change her major. Another great achievement, realized in the last year, has been packing houses at clubs and restaurants that have featured me, with customers asking where and when can we see you again?

Of course my hubby, kids, friends and church, but who has been most instrumental in my continuing was master bassist, Nick Schneider. I had stopped singing and a friend took me to a jam session and Nicky said, Oh yeah, you got it baby and were gonna get you out there. He landed me a job with his son--a phenomenal musician in his own right--at the Peninsula Hotel for 6-months and I havent stopped since.

Favorite CD you are listening to right now? Amazingly as a vocalist, I love instrumentalists and the funkier the better. Right now, I am listening to local yocals, Billy Denk and the Jon Weber Trios Circulicity and the late great Ken Chaneys The Awakening.

What are your future musical goals? To enwrap myself into the lives and song stylings of other jazz divas like Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Washington, Carmen McRae and my cousin Ella, so that venues abroad will clamor to have me perform. I want this Jazzlady to not only wear that title but emulate it.

favorite cuisine to cook at home?Im afraid I fall short in this department, lets just say Im not very domesticIm imported, or is it important, or impotent? Whatever, eating is my specialty.

Beverage of choice? Recently discovered Margaritas and Sangrias but one or two and Im done. Any more than that does me in.

Favorite TV Show?Its a toss-up between The Mentalist and Scandal, love the suspense.

Favorite place in Chicago to hang out?Reggae night at Tapas 7232. I let my hair down and dance .

Theatre and choral music at Chute Junior and Evanston Township High Schools were my start. I elected to major in music at Spelman College, Atlanta, GA. While my classmates had been studying since they were six or younger, I was enrolled in remedial classes and told I couldnt keep time. It was suggested I change my major. Working like hell, I made the jury honor roll 7 out of 8 semesters and graduated cum laude. I immediately landed a gig with Atlantas Theatre of the Stars and performed alongside Georgio Tossi, Michelle Lee and other celebs. However, my self-esteem was zilch, so I stopped for nearly 20 years. Venturing away from what was thought taboo in my home, I tried out jazz. My starch Christian family feared jazz/blues entertainers were bound to a lifestyle of drugs, sex and poverty, so in the Jones home Lawrence Welk and a glimpse of gospel were the order of the day. To that I finally said, hah! I was in love with jazz.

Andrew Distel is a vocalist and trumpet player. He was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio where he attended the prestigious College Conservatory of Music studying both trumpet and voice. He moved to Chicago to continue his education, receiving a graduate degree in jazz voice from Roosevelt University. He has played at such notable venues as: The Green Mill, The Pump Room, The Blue Wisp Jazz Club, Green Dolphin Street, and Pops For Champagne. His quartet plays regularly-every Friday and Saturday night at The Pump Room-featuring Pete Benson, Hyosub Kim, and George Fludas.

She has performed at many other top notch Chicago venues such as the Pump Room, Andys Jazz Club, Pops for Champagne, Fitzgeralds, the Jazz Showcase, and the Green Mill. A graduate of Yale and the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Logan, a Jazz Vocalist is a veterinarian by day and a jazz singer at night is available for Corporate Events. The classically trained vocalist has performed jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues in the U.S. and abroad. She has portrayed two of her idols, Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson, at the Black Ensemble Theater. She has released So Many Stars, her first major CD! National airplay began in September, 2008. Jims interest in jazz began in grade school when he discovered Daddio Daleys radio program on what was then WXFM. With a lot of tenacity and a little help from his older brother, Jim learned how to play the blues and to read music having no formal lessons until he was in college. Still, by the time he was studying music as an undergraduate, he was proficient enough to be selected to perform in a trio with guest-artist Wynton Marsalis. For Lindy Endres, music played a bit of a different role in the beginning. Finding the perfect song to choreograph and dance to was key, as Lindy dreamt of becoming a professional dancer one day. Her childhood was filled with an array of dance styles, recitals and show choir competitions, always being labeled the dancer, never the singer. Upon graduation from Sauk Prairie High School, Sauk City, WI, Lindy attended UW Stevens Point to receive her BA in dance. With her goal in sight, Lindy dove into the world of college dance, only to become sidetracked by the musical productions UWSP had to offer. These shows ignited Lindys flame for singing, a talent which she thought she would never desire. Being cast in multiple musicals paired with private voice lessons created a newfound goal; to become a professional singer.

Marc Pompe began performing around Rush Street as a solo piano/vocal in the mid fiftys and was influenced by the music of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. Vocal influences include Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Jon Hendricks. In 1965, Marc left Chicago to work out of New York and played at Jillys (NYC), Eddies Backstreet in St. Thomas, The Gaslight Club in Toronto and Mothers Lounge in Pittsburgh. After 40 years of performing, 1997 saw the release of Marcs first CD, Nobody Else But Me, on Kopaesthetics Records. Since then, Marc has released 4 additional albums.

Rhonda High Browne has been a singer/songwriter for a number of years in the Chicago area and elsewhere. Roger L. Harris is a pianist residing in Chicago, IL. His musical talents were evident at an early age. His father, Leo Harris, is the cellist that founded the South Side Family Chamber Orchestra and encouraged Roger to embrace his gift. Roger is currently the Conductor Emeritus of that orchestra.

After receiving his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Roosevelt University in Chicago, Roger taught band, orchestra, choir, general music, and commercial music in various Illinois and Indiana school districts.
