Kokomo 81, Manual 33
WRESTLING
Kokomo finished sixth in the John Hurrle Invitational at Tech
The Lady Kats bounced back from a poor outing Wednesday night and jumped all over
Indianapolis Manual Lady Redskins Friday night with full court pressure and came away
with an 81-33 victory.
The Lady Kats led 21-4 after one quarter and never looked back.
Leading the way for the Lady Kats were Chloe McClain with 17 points, Olivia Hemmerich
with 12, and Sanighia Balantine and Brooke Hughes each had 11.
McClain also had six steals, and Balantine grabbed seven rebounds. Zoey Reed had seven
assists to lead the Lady Kats.
Kokomo turned over Manual 47 times while only committing 13.
The Lady Kats outside shooting and free throw shooting are areas we need to improve on.
The Lady Kats play Anderson Saturday, November 30th, at Memorial Gym with a 12:00
p.m. JV tip.
Coach Windlan
The Wildkat grapplers placed sixth, scoring 246.5 team points, at the John Hurrle Memorial
Tournament held at Arsenal Technical High School. Highlighting the Kats’ performance
were:
113 Amari Barbary 9th with a 3-2 record
126 Omarion Clark-Stitts 5th 4-1
138 Wilmer Corrales 6th 3-2
145 Jaquan East 7th 3-2
160 Kymani Howard 6th 3-2
170 Myles Lenoir 4th 2-2
182 Mitchell Wyrick 4th
285 Branson Guge 4th
One other notable result was Myles Lenoir winning the first annual Francis Knue Mental
Attitude Award.
The Kats will be back in action at home tonight against county and sectional rival
Northwestern High School.
GO KATS!

Myles Lenoir accepts the Francis Knue
Mental Attitude Award.
The 2019-2020 KHS girls basketball team broke a three-game losing streak with a win
Saturday over Indianapolis Manual. The final score was 81-33.
It was exactly 3584 days since the Lady Kats scored over 80 points. Some 206 games ago, on
January 30, 2010, Coach Jason Snyder’s girls basketball team defeated Anderson 85-42.
Kokomo’s 48-point margin of victory was nowhere near a school record. In 1992-93, the Lady
Kats defeated Tipton 114-35 at Memorial Gym for a 79-point margin of victory.
Against Manual, there were 12 Lady Kats that saw action, and ten of those scored.
Four Lady Kats hit double figures in the scoring column, but none of them reached 20 points.
Chloe McClain topped the Kokomo scoring with 17 points.
The Lady Kats tied a KHS school record against Manual with their 29 steals, matching the
totals against Peru in the 1986-87 season.
Kokomo set season highs with points (81), field goal attempts (77), field goals made (33), field
goal percentage (42.9%), free throw attempts (26), free throws made (13), rebounds (44),
offensive rebounds (31), assists (21), and steals (29). They also set season lows in turnovers
(13), blocked shots (0), and personal fouls (11).
The Wildkats shot 47% from the field in the second half against Manual.
The Lady Kats had 52 points in the paint against Manual, while the Lady Redskins had just six
against the Wildkats.
Kokomo forced Manual into 47 turnovers. Those 47 errors were turned into 46 points by the
Wildkats.
The Lady Kats have made at least one three-pointer in each of their four games, but the
Wildkats have yet to make more than two from behind the arc.
Kokmomo was consistent in their scoring with Manual. The Lady Kats had 21points in the first
quarter, 20 in the second, put in 20 points in the third, and had 20 in the fourth.
The Wildkats have scored 174 points this year, but have given up 172.
The Lady Kats have made six three-pointers this year. Our opponents have hit 18.
The Kokomo boys basketball team opens their season tomorrow evening at Memorial Gym,
hosting the Western Panthers. JV tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m.
This will be the 117th season of KHS boys basketball.
The Wildkats have played 2730 games.
The Kats have accumulated 1742 victories and 988 losses in the first 116 years. That’s a
winning percentage of 63.8%.
Out of 116 seasons, Kokomo has earned winning seasons on 86 occasions, 74% of the time.
Kokomo has won 20 or more games in 24 different seasons, the last coming in 2013.
The Wildkats have had losing seasons of 15 or more games eleven times, the last one coming in
2007.
Kokomo has never had more than three consecutive losing seasons.
The Kats did have 15 straight winning campaigns from 1986 to 2001.
The KHS record for consecutive 20+ winning seasons is five. That occurred from 1957 to 1962.
Kokomo has never had a 20-loss season in boys basketball. The most the Wildkats have ever
lost in a single season was 17, and that’s happened twice, 1932 and 1937.
The fewest games the Wildkats ever won in a season was two, but that was in their very first
basketball season when they played four games, winning two and losing two.
In 116 seasons, Kokomo has had just four times when they had .500 years – 1904 (2-2), 1923
(11-11), 1927 (13-13), and in 2018 (12-12).
Joe Platt has the most wins in KHS boys basketball history with 260 in his 14 seasons from 1950
until 1964. That’s four more wins than the 256 of Carl McNulty, who coached from 1968 to
1986.
Joe Platt’s winning percentage of .765 is also the best in the history of KHS.
Of the 24 head boys basketball coaches prior to current coach Bob Wonnell, only three had
losing records for their career at KHS – Walter Cross, J. Paul Jones, and Rick Baumgartner.
Jones and Baumgartner just coached one season at Kokomo, while Cross coached two.
The last time Kokomo won 20 or more games in a row was in 1988-89.
The last time Kokomo lost 10or more in a row was in 1936-37.
Kokomo and Western tipoff the 2019-2020 boys basketball season at Memorial Gym
tomorrow night. The JV game is slated for a 6:00 start.
Over the last 25 years, the first game of the season has been the Wildkat-Panther battle with
the exception of four years ago when Kokomo opened with Lebanon because the season
opener was moved back. That was due to the success of the Wildkat football team.
Tuesday’s game between the two locals will be the 70th in the series with Kokomo winning 61
times to Western’s eight in the first 69 matchups.
Western won last year’s matchup 53-47 on the Panthers’ court.
The series opener came in the 1948-49 season when Kokomo posted a 47-38 win over
Western in the IHSAA sectional. That win started a streak of 18 straight victories in the series
for the Wildkats.
The last year that Kokomo and Western did not play on the hardwood was the 1977-78
season.
The first regular season game between Kokomo and Western came in the 1972-73 season
opener, a game won by the Wildkats 82-49.
Western’s first victory over Kokomo came in the 1980-81 season. The final score was 51-49
at Memorial Gym. Kokomo had opened the season a week before with a win over Cathedral.
The last time Western had beaten Kokomo at Memorial Gym was November 23, 2005. Coach
Rick Baumgartner’s Wildkats team fell to Coach Andy Weaver’s Panther squad 62-57.
Kokomo would go on to finish that year at 10-11, while Western closed at 17-7.
Western was 13-10 a year ago, breaking a streak of three straight losing seasons for the
Panthers.
Kokomo had an 11-15 record last year, their first losing season in the last four years.
Michael Lewis is in his third season as the head coach at Western and has a 19-26 record as
the Panther leader. Overall, he is 118-92 beginning his 10th season as a head coach, including
stints at Delphi and Greenfield-Central. Lewis is 1-1 in games against Kokomo, 0-1 in games
at Memorial Gym, and 2-1in games against Bob Wonnell-coached teams.
Bob Wonnell is also in his third season as the head coach at KHS. He is 23-26 in his two
years at Kokomo and 178-113 overall in his 13 seasons as a head coach, which included 10
years at Indianapolis Tindley and a state championships with the Tigers in 2017.

SEASON PREVIEW
BOYS SWIMMING
The Katfish are excited to dive back into the 2019-2020 season, and with the
new season brings renewed hope of hard work leading to fast swims.
This year we will be led by seniors Brayden York, Cameron Bryant, and Evan
McKinstry. The Katfish have many new faces out for the team this year.
During this season we will see these new swimmers grow and develop into
some phenomenal student athletes who will have some amazingly fast swims.
The team will have depth with several swimmers and divers returning to the
pool this year. With the influx of underclassmen committing to swimming this
season these underclassmen have their work cut out for them in making the
meet roster. Every one of these Katfish is learning to trust the process and
understand the tradition of Kokomo swimming. The hope is, over the course of
the season, they stay focused and stay hungry towards attaining faster and
faster swims.
These Katfish are zoned in and looking forward to fast racing and fast swims
this season leading to accomplishing goals they have set for themselves and the
team!
We look forward to seeing each of you on the pool deck!
Swimcerley,
Coach Fewell

In the IHSAA sectional semi-final at Memorial Gym, Western got out to an early 9-8 lead in
the first quarter, but Kokomo rebounded nicely to claim a 47-38 win over the Panthers.
Dick Bennett and Russ Walker got Western off to a fast start as Bennett had five points and
Walker recorded four. But the Wildkats would close the quarter with an 8-0 run, fueled by
baskets by Glen Umbarger, Benny Kendall, Ralph Baer, and Floyd Grant.
Kokomo, coached by Bud Overton, would lead 28-15 at the half and 32-24 after three
quarters.
