■ Shim Selection

f the pitch is large or the thread diameter is small, the thread lead angle will

beome large and the effective clearance angle will become small.

It is ideal to set the threading insert so the left and right clearance angles are

equal.

In order to do this, it is necessary to choose the correct shim based on the

machining thread pitch and effective diameter using the table below.

■ Shim Selection Procedure

① Chose either “right thread” or “left thread” based on the table below.

② Confirm the machining thread “pitch” row.

① Confirm the value that matches the machining thread effective diameter.”② Confirm the part number of “shim” listed above for the corresponding value. If

it is different from the part number you are currently using, change the shim.

Example: If you’re machining a right M16 × 2.0 thread,

the effective diameter is 14.701 mm, so the

values of a [2.0] mm pitch and [11.4 to 17.4] mm

effective diameter in the table correspond.

Therefore the “YE3-1p” in the “For External

Diameter” column is the corresponding shim.

Shims for β°1 = - 1.5°, - 0.5°, 0.5°, 2.5°, 3.5° and 4.5° are sold separately.

* Shim for SSTI R1812M16 and SSTI R2016M16 is not necessary. (Standard tilt angle 1.5° already comes with the holder.)

・ The grooves of the thread are machined while leaving the crest untouched.

(The machined surface from the previous operation remains)

・ You can machine a thread with different pitch widths with the same insert

・ In the process before threading, it is necessary to nish the workpiece with

the specied external diameter (or internal diameter)

・ Sharp threads are easily formed

・ Thread shapes conforming to the screw specications can be machined.

・ Only specic thread specications and pitch can be machined.

・ In order to nish a thread with the wiper edge, a nishing allowance of

0.1mm per side is required.

・ Sharp thread peaks can be round off.

■ How to Replace Shims

■ About Wiper Edges

■ About Cutting Methods

We recommend modified flank infeed machining as a cutting method for SSTE type and SSTI type.

With this cutting method, chip curl diameter is smaller, it is possible to stabilize chip control, and you can suppress the

trailing edge damage that commonly occurs with radial infeed machining. (We recommend a 1° modified angle)

● Apply the insert on the right to the STHI type holder.

● If using NIR2000 with a pitch over 1.5mm or NIR3000 with a pitch

over 2.5mm, it is possible to make the rounded blade edge large

enough so it doesn’t get in the way of thread accuracy.
