Three Beliefs Happy People Share

I have had the good fortune to have worked with some great teams and have found that happy team
members produce the best results and customer experience. I am intrigued with the concept of
happiness and believe that we each have the option of choosing to be happy. So, to achieve our goals in
business and life, the question becomes how to develop the skills that result in feeling happy more
often.
I struggle to define happiness and yet am passionate about achieving it. I suspect you may feel equally
interested in and challenged by the topic. We are exposed to a variety of concepts, theories and
practices purporting to help us achieve happiness. Having studied hundreds of books, audio programs
and seminars from thought leaders in sales and personal development, I can say that I do not envision a
time when I will complete my study of personal development nor my pursuit of happiness. I think it is a
process that is ongoing throughout our lives.
One of the challenges we each face is defining happiness. It’s personal and differs for everyone. It is also
difficult to prioritize our time to pursue the practices that can develop a positive attitude and reinforce
happiness in our lives. I have found the following concepts to be helpful in framing my view of
happiness.

1. Visualization
You may be familiar with this concept being called the law of attraction. Countless motivational authors
espouse the importance of defining our goals. By understanding where we want to go, believing in our
ability to achieve our goals and moving in that direction, circumstances will align to help us achieve our
vision. Of course, we have to take steps towards achieving our goals. They don’t happen by themselves.
I believe people with a vision are happier. They know where they are going and have a sense of purpose.
They are not a rudderless ship bobbing along their life’s journey. They have a plan. They get a sense of
accomplishment as challenges are met and overcome. Their days are guided by a vision grounding them
and giving their life a deeper meaning.
2. Abundance
I believe that the pie grows as people achieve their dreams. The slices don’t get smaller. If you didn’t get
the promotion you felt was a perfect fit even after you did everything right, maybe it wasn’t meant to
happen. Something different or better is in your future, or you have more to learn before being ready
for that next step.
Therefore, there is no room in our lives for being jealous of others’ achievements. When someone wins,
we do not lose. We can celebrate everyone’s success knowing that their success does not diminish our
opportunities. Their success is proof that our goals can also be achieved and be just as fulfilling.
3. Gratitude
We have all heard that we should treat each day as a gift. I agree we should be grateful for each day,
however we often struggle as daily priorities and responsibilities drive us from one meeting or task to
another. We tick off lists getting a sense of accomplishment for each checkmark as we run through our
days, rarely taking time to look up and notice how fortunate we really are.
I believe we can each be a little happier by taking a deep breath and looking up from our lists now and
then to be grateful for our lives and the people in them. By being grateful for our lives today we can
follow our path towards achieving our desired future while enjoying the journey. Living for today while
pursuing a better tomorrow do not have to be mutually exclusive activities.

The simplicity of these concepts belies how difficult it is to incorporate them in our lives. Interwoven in
these beliefs is the over-arching principle that we gain the most satisfaction and happiness by helping
others achieve their goals. I believe that by working together, we all will have a more rewarding journey
and can celebrate our inevitable successes together.
