LWV to Discuss Primary ElectionsThe new League of Women Voters (LWV) discussion group will meet Sunday, October 8, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Lakelands Clubhouse. The topic will be Do our primary elections need changes? Some people say their vote doesn’t make a difference, so why bother to vote? Others want a chance to vote for candidates, but our closed party primaries keep them from participating. Do we need changes to address some of these issues? The LWV has studied a variety of different primary styles and will present some alternative ways to conduct primary elections in Maryland. The LWV is a non-profit, non-partisan political organization that neither supports nor opposes any political party or candidate. Everyone is invited to attend this meeting. For more information, contact Carol Blackburn, at [email protected].

Calendar of Events wishes to run for a director’s position should complete this form and return it to the management office by Friday, October 6, at 5:00 p.m. It is very important to the stability and efficiency of the LCA to have strong leadership. As such, it is imperative that qualified candidates come forward to serve on the Board of Directors. The five-member board is the governing body of the LCA. The members meet regularly on the second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Lakelands Clubhouse. Board meetings are open to all Lakelands residents. The responsibilities of the director position encompass the total operation of the association. Board members can expect to spend three to five hours per month attending the Board of Director’s monthly meeting and one or two committee meetings as Board Liaison. Additionally, board members must be familiar with the association’s governing documents and rules and regulations. Current board members, as well as management staff, are happy to assist with this. Several committees operate under the board and address a majority of specific Lakelands needs. All board and committee positions are volunteer positions. These dedicated individuals are vital to making life in the Lakelands the best it can be. All homeowners are welcome and encouraged to be a part of this  effort. For more information about committees, visit the Lakelands website at www.lakelands.org. If you have not received a Candidate Questionnaire, please contact the management office at 240-631-8338. The form can also be downloaded at www.lakelands.org. Ballots will be mailed to all residents toward the end of October. Stay tuned to next month’s Lakelands Leader for complete details on the candidates, the election and information concerning the Annual Meeting.

Ji Sung has always been interested in fashion. When she and her husband Tim opened Gazebo Café on Main Street a few years ago, she had originally wanted to open a boutique, but those plans were put on hold because the popularity of the café kept them very busy. This past spring, they had to close the café for a brief time, which gave them the opportunity to re-evaluate the business. They have decided to go back to their original plan. As of press time, Gazebo Boutique is scheduled to open in early October when the café reopens. Gi has spent a significant amount of time researching and finding products that she will sell at the boutique and is building her inventory. More than half of the items are from Korea, while others are from Hong Kong. The selection of items includes mostly dresses and tops. However Gi has also purchased a small selection of handbags, shoes, pants and

skirts. She stresses that the clothing is all high quality, made of the finest materials. “The trend right now is a loose style” said Gi. Many of the items that she has selected follow that trend. Customers can find both formal and everyday items. The boutique is located in the lower level of the 422 Main Street café and can be accessed through the back door

or through the café entrance in the front. Customers will not find well-known brands, but they will find a great selection of moderately-priced, fashionable items. The atmosphere is warm and bright, with clothing displayed on racks and a dressing area for trying on the clothes. Gi is happy to offer advice. “I want my customers to buy clothing that they really like, and that they will take home and be happy with,” she said. The hours of the boutique have not been established yet, but will likely be Wednesday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays after brunch, perhaps 1:30 – 5:00 p.m.

After 17 years of practice in the Kentlands, Dr. Karl Lee is retiring. Dr. Lee opened his dental practice on Market Street West on May 2, 2000, and his office has been a fixture in Market Square ever since. He recalls his business neighbors at that time. “Last Mango, Hakuba, Star Diner, Potomac Pizza, Persiano Gallery, an office supply store and Zany Brainy were in business,” he said. “We have seen significant positive changes in our neighborhood over the years.” Dr. Lee originally founded his practice on Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg in 1989. In 1991, he and his wife, Kathy, moved to their Rocky Gorge townhouse, the twentieth residence to be built in the Kentlands. An avid tennis player, Dr. Lee recalls watching the tennis courts being built. He also remembers the very first Oktoberfest in 1991, which was sponsored by Chevy Chase Bank. As a Kentlands business owner, Dr. Lee developed many close relationships within the immediate community, seeing his patients in and out of the office. “It was really special having my patients as my friends,” he said. Dr. Lee relished the fact that he could walk to work. In fact, he says that his best memories are walking home from the office, pausing to admire the sunset over Inspiration Lake, and thinking how lucky he is to live and work in this neighborhood.  Kathy is a 4th grade teacher at the Maret School, in Washington, DC, where their son, Bear, attended school from kindergarten through his graduation this past spring. With Bear leaving for college, Dr. Lee realized that it was time to make a change. Tennis instruction will be the next chapter in Dr. Lee’s life. He is a certified USPTA Tennis Instructor and will be working at Georgetown Prep, and with the junior development program of OSSA Tennis Academy, one of the most successful training programs for junior players in the Washington, DC area. Additionally, along with Marna Katzel, Kentlands Head Tennis Pro, he has started a program called Wounded Warrior Tennis, to teach tennis to wounded veterans. Dr. Lee shared his love of tennis with Bear, who just started his freshman year at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where he is playing on their 14th-ranked D3 tennis team.  Dr. Lee said, “I have had the good fortune to have Dr. Ernest Ponraj  and Melissa Chen, my long time Practice Manager, purchase my practice and retain its integrity and vision, having the commitment to provide excellent dental care in a nurturing environment.” The transition is effective as of October 1. Dr. Ponraj is a 2008 graduate of Loma Linda School of Dentistry and has practiced dentistry since that time.  He is originally from the Silver Spring area and considers this region to be his home.  Melissa has been with the practice for more than

eight years and will be retained as the Practice Manager and Assistant. Dr. Ponraj will be taking over Dr. Lee’s current 1,400 active patients. “I expect the high level of care to continue with the transition of the practice, as it will remain in their qualified and steadfast care,” said Dr. Lee.

The Facilities Committee is a vital component of the Lakelands Community Association. This committee has many roles, including recommending improvements to and maintaining the community’s recreational facilities, including the clubhouse, fitness center, tennis courts and basketball courts. They also establish policies for use of these facilities and look at ways to help the community save money with better use of energy within the clubhouse. Some of the projects that the Facilities Committee has completed recently include:• Renovation of the Red and Green Rooms and the bathrooms on

the first floor of the clubhouse.• Updated the lobby areas on

the ground and first floors of the clubhouse.

• Installed a backboard on the tennis courts.• Updated and maintained the

tot lots. Currently they are working on two major projects: the renovation of the men’s and women’s bathrooms on the basement

level of the clubhouse, and updating the fitness center. If these sound like the types of projects you’d like to work on, please consider joining the Facilities Committee. They cannot perform their functions with less than three members and they currently only have two. No experience is necessary to join, just a desire to be a part of the community and make it the best it can be! The Facilities Committee meets just once a month, on the 4th Wednesday at the Clubhouse at 7:00 p.m. If you’re interested, please contact Michele Kennedy at 240-631-8338 or [email protected].

Adam and Katie Lucas have lived in Lakelands for just a little over a year, but they have already immersed themselves into the community. They are a young couple that is passionate about the environment and their community. Adam is a member of the Lakelands Community Association Social Committee, and Katie is a member of the Muddy Branch Alliance (MBA). Katie is from Richmond and Adam is from Pittsburgh. They met as students at the University of Vermont in 2005, when Adam was a senior and Katie was a sophomore. Adam graduated with a degree in Natural Resources Planning and started working in DC, while Katie continued her studies, and graduated a semester early with a degree in Political Science and Biology. They have been married for eight years and have a son, Theo, who will be three years old in December. Adam is employed by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration at the  Department of Transportation, where he works in hazmat transportation compliance and enforcement.  Katie works for Booz Allen Hamilton in project management and data analytics for two main clients, the National Parks Service and the Department of Justice. After living in Montgomery Village for eight years, they moved to Lakelands. “It almost feels like college again,” said Katie. “We go out and see people we know everywhere.” Theo loved playing at the Lakelands pool this summer, Katie works out regularly at Foundry Fitness on Main Street, and Adam has been busy planning and executing the variety of community events sponsored by the Social Committee. “I really wanted to get involved in the neighborhood,” he said. “Joining the Social Committee has been a great way to meet people.” “We love the farmer’s market and we’re excited about the new plans for downtown,” said Katie. Perhaps what they love most are the trails located within the neighborhood. “So many people don’t even know we have these great trails right here in our neighborhood,” she said. Katie has always liked science and believes strongly in protecting the environment, which prompted her to join the MBA, a local non-profit group made up of citizens wanting to make a difference in their local environment. In particular they work to protect the trails and natural environment that surround the Muddy Branch, a tributary stream of the Potomac River which originates in Gaithersburg. Recently, Katie worked with a local youth who was working on his Eagle Scout project. She oversaw a group of approximately 30 students who re-routed a particularly steep part of the trail. “We re-graded it so that mountain bikers can use it,” she said. Getting kids outside

is another of Katie’s passions. She is planning a family walk with the MBA for Saturday morning, October 14, during which children and their families will have the opportunity to explore nature along the trail. In keeping with their love of the outdoors, this summer they took Theo to the Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp in the mountains of Pennsylvania, carrying on a tradition that Adam’s family participated in for many years. They spent the week exploring nature, fishing, swimming and relaxing. In the winter, Katie and Adam enjoy skiing and snowboarding. When they’re not outside, they enjoy music and home brewing. The Lucas family has found home here in Lakelands. “We’re here until we retire to Vermont!” said Adam.

The Lakelands Leader 23October 2017

By Gina Dropik

Moving to a new town as a teenager isn’t always easy. But when Brendan McGonagle moved from Cape Cod, Massachusetts to Lakelands in February 2015 he said he fit in right away. As a junior at Quince Orchard High School (QOHS),

Brendan says, “My friends and I always talk about how it feels like I grew up here, but really I only moved here two years ago.” Playing sports at QOHS helped make the transition easier. Brendan has been a member of the school’s lacrosse and football teams since his freshman year. He is currently a wide receiver and plays special teams for the varsity football team. ”I love the spirit, pride, competition, the Red Army,

the community, coaches, players, and just anything about QO,” he said. Brendan especially likes Friday game days when everyone wears red and wishes the players good luck. Brendan started playing football when he was just a little guy. His mom, Beth, remembers that he’d throw the ball and tackle himself. In Massachusetts, he played for the Sandwich Bulldogs Pop Warner team from second through eighth grade. Life in Lakelands is much different from life on Cape Cod, where Brendan recalls big houses with big yards. “Living on the Cape was more roomy and isolated. Here everyone is always with each other and there are so many places to go nearby.” He says what he likes most about living in Lakelands is that he is within walking distance to almost all of his friends’ homes.

He also loves all of the nearby amenities, such as the turf field, basketball courts, swimming pool and the fitness center at the clubhouse. Brendan has two older brothers, Jonathon and Colin. His father, Paul, is Vice President of News/News Director for FOX 5 and his mom is a preschool teacher at Georgetown Hill in Darnestown. Not surprisingly, in his spare time, Brendan enjoys playing and watching sports. He also enjoys just hanging out with his friends and family and taking vacations.  After just a few years in Lakelands, Brendan says he can’t believe how many great people he’s met that he can’t imagine not having in his life. With an eye to the future, Brendan said that going to Ohio State is one of his main goals if he doesn’t decide to play football. “If I do play football in college, I’ll go anywhere that has a good business program for sports and/or just business,” he said.

QOHS Booster Club Supports All School Clubs and ActivitiesBy Micaela Brick, QOHS Class of 2018

The hidden backbone of Quince Orchard High School (QOHS) has always been the Booster Club. Run by a group of dedicated parents and staff, the club raises money for numerous events that make QOHS great. Despite the common misconception that the Booster Club solely supports athletics like football, the club is vital to funding various clubs such as band, photography, Best Buddies and virtually any other program QOHS offers. Four-year club member Tara Kavadias said, “Booster Club is fun because it’s being there for all the kids at the school and recognizing all of their interests, not just athletics.” The way the club raises money is not just simply by asking for donations. They hold many events throughout the year to gather support and awareness. The popular mulch sale held every spring raised about $60,000 towards school benefits last year alone. Without the Booster Club, many QOHS favorites would not be possible, such as homecoming, concession stands at athletic games, and even spirit wear. Fundraisers are held year-round. Their next event, called the “Feast of QO” will be held at our very own Lakelands Clubhouse on October 21st. There is a $25 admission fee (which will all go towards school funds) and gives access to a silent auction, as well as food from different restaurants from all over the county. Anyone can become a member of the Booster Club, regardless of if you have a child who currently attends QOHS. There is a $20 fee to join, but you don’t have to be a member to contribute. Visit www.qohsboosters.com to purchase tickets for the event on October 21, or look for updates on other upcoming events. Go Cougars!

Q: I have a teenage daughter with significant emotional issues. Her friendships at school can be so short-lived. I have a hard time keeping track of who’s in and who’s out from week to week. Our relationship is quite volatile as well; there’s a lot of storming upstairs and slamming doors or sobbing at the drop of a hat. Her father has been giving her a wide berth lately, so I feel like it is all falling on me. I’m truly out of my depth on this one. Her pediatrician suggested a DBT skills group. Can you tell me what DBT is, who it is supposed to help, and how?

A: Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT, is a structured therapy for emotional difficulties that include, but are not limited to severe anxiety, self-harm, and the emotional volatility common in many personality disorders. This type of therapy is done in both individual and group settings. DBT helps people identify their strengths, thoughts and beliefs, and the habitual assumptions they have that are making their life harder. The main focus of DBT therapy is the development of specific mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills. Have additional questions or want to learn more? Visit our blog at KentlandsPsychotherapy.com or contact either Nicole Beane, LCSW-C or Gail Groboski, LCSW-C at Kentlands Psychotherapy at 240-252-3349. We are happy to discuss how DBT might be helpful to your child.

Attention Dog OwnersAs a pet owner, you have the responsibility to clean up after your pet. Please only allow your dog to defecate on common property and be sure to pick up the waste. There are some yards in the community that are not fenced and are often mistaken for common property. Additionally, please dispose of your dog waste only in public waste containers or wait until you get home and put it in your own trash can. Do your part to help keep the community clean and feces–free. Everyone will appreciate your cooperation.

Parking on City StreetsPlease park within marked street spaces. Cars that are illegally parked (too close to stop signs or too close to mews entrances) risk receiving a parking ticket from the City of Gaithersburg police.

The City of Gaithersburg is enforcing a 48-hour parking limit on public streets. You may be issued a ticket if you are parked more than 48 hours. The following is taken from the Online Municipal Code:

“No person shall park any motor vehicle or other vehicle upon any street, avenue, road, highway, public parking lot or vacant lot for a continuous period of more than forty-eight hours at any one time.”
