Two years ago, John Katz stood on a pile of dirt and imagined a renais-sance.

Katz, president of the Columbia Fire�ies minor league baseball team, took a detour on his way to Charlotte in 2014 to swing by the future home of the Fire�ies’ stadium, Spirit

Communications Park. Far from the $37 million showpiece that just earned Ballpark Digest’s 2016 Ballpark of the Year award, Katz found himself looking at red dirt and dilapi-dated buildings.

“I remember standing here that �rst day,” said Katz, then president of the team that would move to Columbia, the Savannah Sand Gnats. “I just kind of walked around, and I could start to see it.”

Katz’s vision is well on its way to becoming reality, as the 20-year, billion-dollar build-out of the mixed-use Commons at BullStreet continues around the ballpark that is its centerpiece. Tenants are being recruited for 414,000 square feet of retail space that will include apartments and a hotel. In July, Cobb �eatres announced plans for a 10-screen

“Our executive chef, Tim Morton, is in charge of the menu,” says Graham Ervin, director of sales
