PARENTING SUPPORT
Welcome to today’s newsletter. This week’s ‘Parenting Support’ article is called, ‘The language of
independence’. These twelve tips, are very well researched and each one identifies a clear
personal goal to develop. I particularly like the emphasis on building a ‘family culture’. Culture
refers to the way we do things and I believe children benefit greatly from experiencing a strong
family culture that is ethical, predictable, consistent and empathetic.

Thank you to Wally Robertson, Leigh Priest, Jan Priest, Jim Lane, Maureen Lane and Doug Nolte. I would also like to acknowledge the ‘The Great War’ book, a gift from Roma Britnell, State Member for South West Coast. Thank you also to our school ambassadors for their presentations at our town service on ANZAC day and to all other students, families and teachers who attended. We were very well represented!

sequenced ideas. Phonics/Spelling in Milo Monkey activities we are learning the sound ’h’
and writing closed syllable words; eg. hit, hop, hat, hut. In Maths we are learning about
measuring the time using calendars and analogue and digital clocks. Ms Argent will be

Grade 3/4’s
This week we have looked at the significance and history of ANZAC day. Some of us have
ventured down to the War Memorial, explored the first day at Gallipoli through
technology, and read stories. Well done to those who made it down to the Dawn service
Tuesday morning. In Reading, we have been exploring the comprehension strategy
'Finding the main idea', and learning about Grammatically incorrect sentences. In Writing
we are continuing to analyse persuasive texts, and exploring ways to persuade the reader
to try out an activity/hobby that we enjoy. In Maths, we are continuing to explore
fractions and decimals.
Grade 5/6’s
A big thank you to all the students who participated in the ANZAC service last Tuesday.
We had a terrific representation of 5/6 students who were dressed in school uniform and
our school ambassadors read their personal reflections to a large audience. Year 5
students have been preparing for the upcoming NAPLAN testing in week four while year 6
students have been working on their writing projects. All students continue to work on
fractions, persuasive text and comprehension activities.

CHESS TOURNAMENT 2017
What a great day our chess players
had last Friday. Our students
thoroughly enjoyed themselves and I
had as much satisfaction watching
them concentrate and take in the
friendly but competitive atmosphere.
Each student listened intently as the
organisers of the event gave advice
during the intervals.
The event clearly showed how
capable students can perform when
they put their minds to work. Mental
discipline was a key feature of the day
as was the process of learning along the
way.
Thanks so much to our parent drivers for
assisting at such short notice, the students
for being so well focused and the
organisers of the event. Bring on the 2018
Chess Championships!
Our school came second in the school's
team event and a number of students
won individual honours - Well done!
Bob Beekhof.
It was a really enjoyable day, you could read the wins and loses on the kids faces as
they reported in between the rounds, everyone having a share of both. The
encouraging lessons and feedback given to the kids between rounds ensured everyone
would leave the better for it. The kids are already talking about and eagerly
anticipating next years event .
Andy Kennedy.
Comment of the day...."Mr B, I had all my prawns in a row!"
