The investigative arm of U.S. Immigrations and Customs En- forcement Homeland Security Investigations led the operation that saw about a dozen businesses and plants raided and the arrests of 14 business owners and managers and more than 130 workers. Most of the arrests occurred in northern Nebraska and southern Minne- sota. Several of the businesses were in O’Neill, Nebraska, a town of about 3,000 about 160 miles (260 kilometers) northwest of Omaha. Officials said they were still looking to take three owners or managers into custody as part of the operation. Special agent in charge Tracy Cormier described the operation as one of the largest in Homeland Security Investigations’ 15-year history. “I would say the amount of criminal warrants that are being executed will be one of the largest for HSI,” she said. “I’m not aware of a bigger one.” Between 350 and 400 federal, state and local law enforcement officers worked together on the arrests, she said. The focus of the operation is unusual in that it targeted business operators for arrest. Most immigration raids have targeted workers suspected of being in the country illegally. TDAP VACCINATION Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department encourages all preteens (age 11 or 12) to get their Tdap vaccination. Tdap vaccine protects against three serious diseases: tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (also called whooping cough). The Tdap vaccine takes the place of what used to be called the tetanus booster. If your teen hasn’t gotten a Tdap shot previously, ask their doctor or nurse about getting the shot now. Also, if you are a parent or grandparent of infant children, talk to your provider about this vaccine. Often infants contract whooping cough from the ones who take care of them. These diseases are caused by bacteria. Diphtheria and pertussis are spread from person to person through secretions from coughing or sneezing. Tetanus enters the body through cuts, scratches, or wounds. Before vaccines, as many as 200,000 cases of diphtheria, 200,000 cases of pertussis, and hundreds of cases of tetanus, were reported in the United States each year. Since vaccination began, reports of cases for tetanus and diphtheria have dropped by about 99% and for pertussis by about 80%. If you have questions about Tdap or any immunization, call Melissa Propp, RN Public Health Nurse at (308) 345-4223. FOOLISH VIRAL VIDEO CRAZE A viral video craze perhaps even more foolish than the Tide Pod Chal- lenge is emerging which is making traffic safety experts cringe. It’s called the Kiki Challenge or the Shiggy Challenge. People tape themselves hopping out of cars while the vehicles are still moving to dance beside the rolling car to a song by rapper Drake. Nick Jar- musz, spokesman for AAA Nebraska, was stunned to see the videos online. “This is one of those things where I can’t believe that we would have to tell people that this is dangerous,” Jarmusz says, “but at the same time, it’s also not completely surprising. We know that people regularly engage in all sorts of dangerous behavior behind the wheel.” The videos feature both passengers and drivers jumping out the vehicle to dance, sometimes even splaying themselves across the hood, as the car careens down the road. LAW ENFORCEMENT OPERATION A large federal law enforcement operation conducted Wednesday targeted businesses in Nebraska and Minnesota that officials say knowingly hired — and mistreated — immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally. The investigative arm of U.S. Immigrations and Customs En-forcement — Homeland Security Investigations — led the operation that saw about a dozen businesses and plants raided and the arrests of 14 business owners and managers and more than 130 workers. one more time. Thomas A. Edison

SPORTS The Nebraska volleyball team is ranked second in the AVCA Pre-season Coaches Poll, which was released on Wednesday. The Huskers received 20 of the 63 first-place votes and totaled 1,525 points. Stanford, which received 43 first-place votes, took the No. 1 ranking with 1,575 points. Texas (1,389), Minnesota (1,342) and Kentucky (1,260) rounded out the top five. Other Big Ten teams in the top 10 included No. 6 Penn State and No. 9 Wisconsin. The defending NCAA and Big Ten champion Huskers return three start-ers from last year’s team, while eight of the 15 Huskers are new-comers. Nebraska will be replacing significant contributors in first-team All-America setter Kelly Hunter, second-team All-America outside hitter Annika Albrecht, honorable-mention recipient Briana Holman at middle blocker and defensive specialist Sydney Town-send. Three former student-athletes will be inducted into the University of Nebraska at Kearney (UNK) Athletic Hall of Fame during ceremo-nies on Homecoming weekend this September 14-15. The 2018 Hall of Fame members are football player Matt Bruggeman, Class of 1996; men’s track athlete Lance Pfeiffer, Class of 2006 and Class of 2008; and women’s cross country/track athlete Paula (West) Mayfield, Class of 1991. The group will be honored at the Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet on Friday, Sept. 14, in the Ponderosa Room of the Nebraskan Student Union. A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner and a program starting at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $35 per person ($40 after Sept. 5) and reservations can be made on the UNK Alumni Association website (www.unkalumni.org/homecoming). On Saturday, Sept. 15, the class will be recognized at half time of the homecoming football game vs Emporia State. That contest kicks off at 2 p.m.
