TiPs for making The mosT of Cli
This is an opportunity to refresh your mind, learn new strategies, share with others in situations similar to your own, and meet new people in the community college system. Here are a few strategies for making the most of this experience:
CheCk the PlaCe Out
If you have time before the conference starts, check the lay of the land. If you take this literally remember we are at high elevation…Find out where the rooms are located (especially the bathrooms). Ask questions about the schedule.
Be COmfOrtaBle
This is not your typical professional conference. Dress for most events is casual, however, the awards dinner is a celebration so if you brought something nice, this might be a good time to wear it. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes because your room is most likely a bit of a hike from the conference activities. Also, a light jacket is recommended as temperatures can dip at night.
eat Well and drink Plenty Of h20
Granlibakken serves up a wonderful selection at the buffet and great dinners. The trick here is to avoid over doing it. And remember, because of the altitude it’s really easy to get dehydrated, so drink plenty of water.
listen aCtively
You know why you wanted to attend this conference and you should have a fair idea of what you hope to learn – listen for it! Bring a notebook and pen and take good notes. Most workshops will provide handouts and/or a summary of the information presented. Use your own notes to fill in the blanks and highlight areas of greatest interest.
PartiCiPate
Sit near the front of the room. Meet and associate with new people. Having lunch with your friends is great, but this is your opportunity to make new friends, take it! Find time to discuss important issues and share information with others that you meet. Volunteer to assist as you see a need, remember this is your conference.
Walk tO the lake
While you’re here enjoy the fresh air and gorgeous scenery. Get out and take a walk. There are great trails around the conference center, along the Truckee River, and down to the lake.

mementO exChange Take advantage of the general session and social activities to find your partner and exchange college mementos. The task is simple, follow the instructions you were given at registration and find your other half by the end of the day. If you have tried talking to people and asking questions and still can’t find your exchange partner, find a 4CS Board member and we will do what we can to help.

An amazing array of items are available at the 4CS silent auction. These items were donated by classified employees and senates throughout the state to showcase their schools, their talents, and to help 4CS raise the money to finance our operations. You can place bids throughout the conference on these great items. Bidding ends on Friday evening at 4:30 pm.

Friday night’s dinner will feature an awards event where classified staff from across the state will be featured along with the CLI Scholarship recipients. 4CS will recognize model senates. We are also recognizing top classified senate websites, our 4CS Sponsors and highlighting YOU, the classified leaders in community colleges. Please also join us Thursday evening as we present the 4CS Leadership Award to Tanna Thomas, CSEA member on the California Community Colleges Board of Governors.

Shedding Light on the New Accreditation Standards and SAOs Scott/Squaw (Part I)
This two-part session will take an in-depth look at how classified staff are expected to participate in accreditation and SAO reporting and documenting. The first session will focus on providing the tools for understanding the accreditation standards and process, looking at the four accreditation standards and the rubric for evaluating the college’s adherence to the standards from a classified staff perspective. This two-part session will take an in-depth look at how classified staff are expected to participate in accreditation and SAO reporting and documenting. Information Illiteracy: A Classified Issue Agate
While literacy was once thought of as an instructor issue, technology has radically changed this. Information illiteracy is a major issue facing K-12 schools, colleges and universities which requires collaborative input from instructors, classified staff, and administrators. Together, we can combat information illiteracy through education and effective practices and policies.
