ROUND THREE ENTRY LIST

FACTS AND FIGURES FOR ROUND THREETRACK NAME: Borderline Speedway TRACK LENGTH: 372m TRACK WIDTH: 14mTRACK RECORD: 10.651 seconds Steve Lines (28/12/2012)LOCATION: Jubilee Highway Glenburnie South Australia

As the large flock of galahs clear the bullring, that is known by the Speedway fraternity as the Borderline Speedway, the tones of Montgomery Genrty’s hit song My Town will be heard blasting from the Hall Motorsport Transport.

After all tonight’s action will be in Steve Lines’ town and there is something special for these drivers who race all over the country to be able to compete in the sport’s biggest stage in ‘their town’.

While it may not actually be a home ground advantage like is seen in the AFL or NRL, it is a boost in confidence and expectations with many people who may only see one race per year coming out to support the local hero.

Having a strong connection with Mount

Gambier from when we enjoyed the friendship and support of Gary and Tracy Douglass from GT Bobcat, our driver Jason Johnson was an adopted Mount Gambier driver and he certainly lifted in ‘My Town’ as Douglass called it.

After two podium finishes in two nights to start his World Series Sprintcars Campaign that sees him on top of the Championship standings, I’dd say to keep an eye on the Hall Motorsport Number Three tonight, and listen for the Montgomery Gentry tunes from the transporter.

Best Wishes

Eight-time World Series Sprintcars Champion Brooke Tatnell used all of his 26 year’s of experience to make a pass for the lead with two laps remaining at Round Two of the 2013/2014 World Series Sprintcars Championship in Murray Bridge.

In one of the best races in WSS history, Tatnell, Luke Dillon, Steve Lines and even in the later stages Shane Stewart diced in front of a huge crowd for the $10,000 on offer.

Dillon was in command almost until the end but Tatnell relieved the talented South Australia, who won the corresponding round last year, within sight of the chequered flag.

Tatnell stood on top of the podium when the dust settled and was visibly thrilled when he emerged from the cockpit of the Krikke Motorsport Hot Rod.

“This is one for the old guys,”

he grinned, “some people wrote us off before this Championship even got started and I can tell you that’s not a very smart thing to do. Dylan (Buswell) and Finchy (Shane Finch) did a great job with this car all night and it’s great to get a win and some points.”

Lines came home in second, backing up on his win from Speedway City with another solid result to maintain his lead in the Championship standings.

“Full credit to Brooke, he did a great job. I feel for Luke because I’ve been there too but he did a good job and we were just able to get a bit luckier in the last few laps,” said Lines

Dillon was naturally deflated, having gone from the lead to third in just two corners.

“We did everything you need to do to win,” he grimaced, “except get the win I guess. I was trying to stay on the fastest line and I thought that was the

bottom. For most of the race it was. I guess we just came up short.”

Dillon had every reason to feel perplexed, having set Quick Time in qualifying for the second night in a row and also winning the Amadio Wines Top 8 Shootout.

Stewart ran a strong fifth but was fourth for much of the race before fellow American Kyle Hirst blew by him in the late stages of the race.

Sixth home was defending WSS champion James McFadden followed by David Murcott in seventh, Robbie Farr eighth, Matt Egel ninth and Trevor Green tenth.

Local driver Ryan Jones was an unfortunate DNF after transferring from the B Main whilst Dubbo’s Jeremy Cross brought about the only red light of the main event, rolling over on the back straight early in the main.

Dillon enjoying the changeFor Luke Dillon, his 2013/2014 campaign has got off to a very different start to anything he’s experienced in his career.

After a highly successful career in the Formula 500 category, Dillon stepped up into a regular ride with the family team Dillon Motorsport Sprintcar last decade with the team led by Dad Garry and Mum Pam with his brother Lee on the tools. This year, the hardest work for the South Australian is getting to the Adelaide airport on time either to catch a flight to Perth or where ever the Diamond Bay Motorsports hauler is parked up as he has gone from the family ride to a regular ride with Western Australian outfit

Diamond Bay Motorsports.When Thursday Thunder

News asked Luke the difference of the two he indicated that his new ride taken pressure off his family.

“Taking the ride with Diamond Bay Motorsports was a new experience and a great opportunity. It has certainly taken a lot of pressure off my family, who have pretty much backed my racing for a lot of years. If it wasn’t for Mum, Dad and the rest of the family, Dillon Motorsport wouldn’t be where it is today, I can’t thank the team at Diamond Bay Motorsports enough for the opportunity to join them for the 2013/2014 World Series,” said Dillon.

Did you know? While you’re all heading home from a night at the track, while on the Speedweek trail most teams will head straight to car wash, complete a clean of the car and truck, then do some routine race maintenance before load up and prepare for the next day. Sometimes this will take up to four hours after the teams have left the track. This all happens while you’re all in bed asleep.

Tatnell enthused and set to chase titleHe may already have eight World Series Championships to his name, but Brooke Tatnell wants to make it number this year.

In typical Tatnell fashion, he has used some people’s doubts as motivation in his championship chase with the Krikke Motorsport outfit.

“Some people wrote us off before this Championship even got started and I can tell you

that’s not a very smart thing to do,” said Tatnell.

“Tonight’ win was good for good for Dylan (Buswell - crew chief) and Finchy (Shane Finch - crew memberto get this win, we are a new combination and are working well together, Dylan is good, he knows he can’t offend me and I know the same applies, this was good for us to kick this points deal off.”

Abbott enjoying a new challengeThursday Thunder News spoke with Abbott

at Murray Bridge about the accident and his trip from Sydney and how he is found racing at Speedway City.

“The crash on night one broke all the main parts that hang on the car, slightly bent the chassis, but we managed to repair it, I suppose we were lucky to only break what we had as spares in the truck, because that’s all I’ve got.”

Abbott has raced the majority of his career in Sydney and has headed to Speedweek to further his experience behind the wheel of the Aussie Forklift Repairs entry.

“I decided I wanted to race everywhere I could at least once, and this is the reason we headed on the road Adelaide for the start of the World Series Sprintcars Speedweek,” said Abbott.

“I’m really glad that I did, the racing is so close and exciting and I look forward to doing this again next year.”

Madsen and Jones fire up in the B MainDespite the top six finishers in the B-Main making the transfer into the Main Event, local driver Ryan Jones and Sydney’s Ian Madsen raced as if they were battling for a World Series Sprintcars Round win.

The pair came together late in the race, which left them both sporting some minor battle scars and when Thursday Thunder News asked the pair about the hard racing for the win Jones’ answer was simple “Because I’m a race car driver and that’s one less person I have to pass in the A.” Madsen answer was “No Comment!”

New South Wales driver Damian Abbott had a nasty crash at night one of the World Series Sprintcars Speedweek at Speedway City. He rode a wheel when he had no where to go in turn four and found himself as high as the catch fence.

East Coast Pipelines Racing Robbie Farr turned up to Round Two of the World Series Sprintcars Speedweek at Murray Bridge Speedway with a brand new car courtesy of a marathon effort by his crew overnight.

During round one, Farr was involved in a lap one incident that brought about an inspiring red light incident, unusually for all the right reasons.

Farr’s East Coast Pipelines Racing entry suffered damage to the front of the car with the only option for him to continue being a complete replacement of the front axle assembly in a ‘closed’ red situation.

What happened next was a band of brothers coming together, something that is unlike almost any other form of motorsport in the world. Farr’s pit crew were joined by up to five of their opposition team members who came to the aid and help complete the required repairs.

At one stage, members from all teams on the infield chipped in to help. As the rest of the field were pushed away the repair crew got the front end in the car, but fell short in getting the front wing on. From there, Farr made his way inside the top ten, but with 20 laps to go Far was involved in a violent accident which saw his car

torn apart, Farr limped back to the pits and his car followed.

“After the lap one crash, I was just trying to keep the car straight. It was hard without the front wing. Then I made contact with another car took out my front end out and the chassis dug in and from there I was just a passenger,” said Farr.

The repairs from the incident turned from a repair job into a salvage mission by Farr’s crew with the main parts undamaged being the engine, driver’s seat, steering box and driver.

Sometimes you’re the bug, and sometimes your the windshield - unfortunately for Robbie Farr he turned out to be the bug during night one of the 2013/2014 World Series Sprintcars Speedweek at Adelaide’s Speedway City. As a

consequence, he turned up to Round Two with a complete new race car Thursday Thunder News reports on how it all happened.

Included on the damaged list included the chassis, fuel tank, front end components, radius rods, torque tube, top wing, front wing and extractors leading to a conservative repair bill of $20,000.

Such was the damage, it took the East Coast Pipeline Racing Team, and others, some 40 minutes to pull the car apart to

be able to reload the chassis into the transporter.

As the majority of Australia slept, up to eight members - both from the East Coast Pipeline team and others - worked on building a new race car before completing the job at 8:30am on Friday morning.

“After we finally got the bent car into the truck, it was then

time to start building a new car for Murray Bridge. By 8:30am we’d got the new one together and it was time to get a couple of hours sleep before getting everything else sorted for a normal race night,” said East Coast Pipelines Crew Chief Nick Speed.

What’s thenumber in chalk?

PAGE 16 thursdaythunder.com.au

If you take a close look at any of the new rear tyres fitted to the cars in World Series Sprintcars you’ll find a number written in chalk. Thursday Thunder News found out what it’s all about.

As a result of a Sprintcar tyre being bias in design (as opposed to radial), it will have a circumference that varies from tyre to tyre. This is not something that is unique to American Racer, but is common to all bias tyre manufacturers. Many tyre manuafacturers these days go to the expense of placing a “chalk-mark” on its bias ply tyres in an attempt to assist the consumer in making the proper selection when purchasing new tyres. Now, to understand its use, you need to understand a little of the manufacturing process as well.

After a tyre is cured, it is removed from the press and placed on a machine called a “post-inflator”. On this machine each tyre has air injected into it for a set period of time. The amount of air is determined by the manufacturer’s engineering department and is not the same for every type of tyre it produces. After a set time period, a tyre is then measured and the circumference is recorded. Then a press operator writes the size on the side of tyres, in yellow chalk

Now, how should the chalk mark be interpreted? It should be viewed as a reference point or a guide on purchasing tyres by size to attempt to attain a certain stagger. Say

for instance, a team needs needed to replace their left rear tyre and the car currently has 12” of stagger) but you want to get 13” of stagger. The tyre you were replacing had an original chalk mark of 92”, and had a roll out, of say, 93”. Obviously, they’d want to fit tyre bigger than the 92” tyre that has been removed. Most likely, a tyre with a chalk-mark of 93”. There are many factors that go into what size a tyre will actually measure. The ambient temperature that day, the air pressure in the tyre, whether the tyre is new or old. These are factors that no, one person, controls. Teams always need to be aware of their existence

and work with what they know. The chalk mark does not tell the teams the circumference of the tyre at running pressure, it does not tell them how big a tyre will grow to, it tells them that a tyre is either going to be bigger or smaller than another one with a different chalk mark. It’s just that simple. Bias ply tyres, by nature, are going to vary in size, no matter what manufacturer it comes from. By keeping good records, using common sense and understanding how the chalk-mark the manufacturers provide, teams will stay on top of the game by selecting the proper sized tyre.

THE CHIEF’S VIEWDanny Holden shares his views and asks some questions on WSS

Nobody has ever asked for my opinions on these matters but I’d thought I’d share them regardless.

Why is it called World Series Sprintcars when 98 per cent of the world’s countries have never participated in a round? I guess it’s like the United States World Series of baseball where only teams from the United States can win .

I still believe the glory days of World Series Sprintcars are unfolding as we watch. How we recall with such fondness on the past will in time be how we recall what’s happening today. As we watch the memories are being made and things always seem better in the past. In ten years time as we sit down yet again on speedweek we will re call how young guns like Pestka and Delamont and Brazier took it up to the established stars like Garry Brazier, McFadden, Tatnell and Lines. Just in the same way as we can re call a 16 year-old James McFadden holding off Brooke Tatnell for a crowd pleasing heat race win at Speedway City.

Page 21: Thursday Thunder News - Edition 3

PAGE 19 Thursday Thunder Facebook

The Chief hopes to see Phil March return to the winner’s circle this Speedweek

Why is it that every year despite my best intentions, I succumb to the track side catering and get suckered into one more hot dog? How many more years will they be doing roadworks between Mount Gambier and Heywood? And why does the man in the blue uniform always park on the hill at Dartmoor pointing a hair dryer at my car.

Will Jamie Cobby finally loose his bridesmaid tag and win a race of World Series Sprintcars? Can Phil March create a nice story by winning a round this season and have the unique honour of winning a round in the first season of World Series Sprintcars and the current season? I for one would love that to happen .

Will all contracted drivers make an A main over speedweek without having to use a provisional. I think the joker is actually that - a real joker. I am not a fan of that or the provisional as I feel it manipulates the racing somewhat. It does make it harder for a non contracted team to actually take a punt and stay on the road when the other contracted teams

have a chance of racing for double points or being guaranteed a spot in the A main.

How impressive are the haulers of the race teams? Each year they just get more impressive. I think some of the drivers need a bit of a hand with their media skills and how to present to the public in a positive light. How cool is it going to be to be able to relive the racing on free to air TV on channel One. I’m excited to hear John Gibson team up with Wade Aunger that will make for compulsory listening. Who actually sets the prices to get into the venues and the venues pits area is it the local tracks or World Series Sprintcars? I’m not much of a tech head but I’m trying to figure out how I can tune my iPad into watching the big screen or for listening to the audio.

Will the venues be able to dish up suitable racing surfaces worthy of A main event? And finally can the gods please smile on every team and race fan and let them enjoy with safety and success a good solid week of racing

What happened last year?

James McFadden wasted little time in atoning for the disappointment in the previous round with a flag to flag win

in Night Three of the Enzed World Series Sprintcars Speedweek (presented by Hog’s Breath Cafe) at Mt. Gambier’s Borderline Speedway

Despite being in considerable pain (McFadden spent most of the day in hospital leading up to the night) from an aggravated rib injury the defending WSS champ sped his Totally Workwear #25 COOL to an uninterrupted victory in the 35 lap A-Main final.

The race was run at a frenetic pace due to a very speedy racing surface that was ‘juiced up’ from light rain that fell in the B-Main (last chance qualifier) only half an hour before.

“The track was fast,” McFadden explained, “really, really fast. You could still move around a bit and pass lapped cars but the speed of the place tonight was amazing. I’m so glad I could get a win for the team tonight after the disappointment at Murray Bridge.”

(Two nights earlier at the previous round in Murray Bridge he had been leading the A-Main when two lapped cars crashed in front of him and he ran out of emergency routes to avoid contact with them. The impact aggravated a previous rib injury and also saw him have to restart at the rear of the field before storming back to third by race’s end).

At Mt. Gambier there would be no such complications as McFadden zipped between the lapped cars with arch-rival American Jason Johnson and Mt. Gambier local hero Steven Lines hot in pursuit.

“I really have to take my hat off to James, he doesn’t make many mistakes and he didn’t tonight either, no matter how hard I chased him.”

Johnson was back to his brilliant best in the HM Racing GT Bobcats Maxim after two frustrating previous nights with engine problems.

“The HM Racing team worked real hard on

this car all week and tonight we’ve got our car speed back. I feel we’re in for a really good shot at the next two rounds of Speedweek now for sure.”

Local hero Steven Lines locked in his third consecutive podium finish in the Halls Motorsport #3 KPC with third place behind Johnson and although the quietly spoken hard charger was pleased with ‘our consistency’ he was definitely not pleased with another to chance to win slipping by.”

“We set fast time in qualifying and we started on the front row,” he explained, “but that’s never enough in these deals, you have to finish off. In World Series everyone brings their A-Game and you have to put in 35 laps of your best to get the win. Full credit to James and Jason for a good race, I just hope we can get a win.”

Robbie Farr was once again very consistent with a strong fourth place in the East Coast Pipeline / Vermeer Maxim edging home ahead of American Shane Stewart in the Monster Energy / Milwaukee Tools J&J and South Aussie young gun Daniel Pestka in the Gawler Farm Machinery J&J.

Pestka made it across the line with seconds to spare as his left rear tyre literally had not one single patch of tread left.

“We ran pretty close to the edge I guess, I could feel the vibration but thankfully we scraped home.”

Following Pestka home was David Murcott (who changed a motor after the Vortex Wings Top 8 Shootout) in the Horrell Motorsport #83 Eagle, Matt Egel in the Rapiti Earthworks #29 COOL, two-time Speedweek feature winner Luke Dillon in the Action Line-marking #81 Eagle and Tim Kaeding in the Krikke Motorsport / Toyota Genuine Parts COOL rounding out the top ten.

For Kaeding tenth was a welcome relief for another gruelling night that included his third consecutive rollover (a flip earlier in the night

when he got caught up in someone else’s spin) and plenty of work to do for his KMS team.

“I won’t say I’m happy with tonight’s result, but at least we got a result for our guys. I’m more determined than ever to get a win for these guys sooner rather than later,” quipped the Californian.

Shaun Dobson was again busy in the Downing Brothers #97 COOL to finish 11th, ahead of onion farmer Wayne Rowett (Kynoch Produce ART) in 12th, South Aussie rising star Brad Keller (Fatchen Cartage #19) in 13th, American legend Danny Smith 14th in the Luke Nash owned Bottle-O #55 Maxim, Eddie Lumbar

(Rapiti Earthworks #36) 15th, seventeen year old Jake Tranter (Kynoch Produce ART) in 16th and WSS debutant Adam Sealey’s Valvoline #S7 home in 17th.

South Aussie Phillip March pulled infield before the chequers in his Maxwill Motors #3, whilst hard charging West Aussie Shane Bradford slammed the track cushion in turn four and peeled the left rear tyre off the beadlock on the rim to also DNF.

American Kyle Hirst looked set for his best WSS result in the Ruhs Racing #99 ART out of Broken Hill but ironically a broken bolt in the front end took him out before he could even lock in one lap, despite

starting on the second row.Spectacular moments, both

good and bad, came thick and fast in the frantic night of action with Nick Lacey’s scary fire in his first heat race when the fuel line came undone in the Video Ezy #26 and the car erupted into flames.

Lacey alighted from the car but was also on fire and had to be smothered by fast moving fire crew as he rolled on to the ground.

Steven Lines set the Revolution Racegear Quick Time in Qualifying much to the delight of the partisan home crowd with a lap record of 10.651s.
