ASandALevelsareBritishqualificationstakenwhenstudentsarenormally aged 16-18 before they go to university.AS stands forAdvancedSubsidiary.AnASLevelisaqualificationnormally

obtainedafteraone-yearcourse.ItconstitutesthefirsthalfofanALevelcourse,butisaqualificationinitsownright.AstandsforAdvanced.AnA Level is a qualification normally obtained aftertwoyearsofstudy.ModulesstudiedinthesecondyearofALevelstudyarereferredtoasA2modules.NormallythreegoodgradesatA-Level are required for university, although four, or in somecasesfive,ALevelswillincreasethelikelihoodofastudentgainingentry to a top university or a course for which there is a highdemand.A*gradesarenecessaryfortheverybestuniversities.

WHAT ARE AS AND A LEVELS?

ARE THEY SUITABLE FOR ME?ALevelsarea“goldstandard”qualification,recognisedaroundtheworldandcurrencyforentryintomajoruniversitiesoremployment.You

willneedtostudyveryhardfortwoyears.ALevelcoursesarebestsuitedtostudentswithanacademicfocus.

WHAT DO I NEED?

Youwillnormallyneedtohavepassed,withatleastaGradeCorabove, atminimum of six subjects, excludingChinese, at IGCSEextended level, or equivalent.Wewould normally expect two ofthosesubjectstobeMathematicsandEnglish.Youwillalsoneedtosatisfythe individualentryrequirementsforsubjectsyouwishtostudyatALevel;anAgradeat IGCSEwouldindicatethatyouare probably suitable for anA Level course in that subject. It issometimes possible to take an A Level in a subject where youobtained a B grade at IGCSEbut you should seek advice beforeselectingsuchsubjects.Alternatively,theschoolcanarrangeentryteststoassessyoursuitabilitytobeginacourse.InsomecasesitispossibletobeginanALevelcoursewithnopreviousexperienceofthatsubject,althoughdiscussionwouldneedtotakeplacebeforethishappens.

AtTYCISwewouldnormallyexpectyoutotakefivesubjectsatASLevelandcontinuetostudyfourofthemtoALevelstandard.

Howeverinspecialcircumstancesitmightbepossibletodiscontinuestudyingonesubjectafteroneyear,todevotemoretimetotheremainingthreesubjects.SomestudentsmayelecttotakedifferentcombinationsofsubjectsandlevelsalthoughthisshouldonlyhappenafterdiscussionwiththePrincipalandthe

UniversityandGuidanceCounsellor.

alreadystudyingforALevelsaboutthesubjects.Readthisbookletcarefully.Thinkaboutyourfutureplans.Therearecommoncombinationsofsubjects,thatoftencomplementeachother,andtheoptionblocksfromwhichyouchoosewillhavebeenbasedaroundthese.Findoutasmuchasyoucan.

Homework is seenasan importantaspectof thecurriculumandyouareexpectedtocomplete tasksby thespecifieddateandtothebestofyourability.Thetimeframeforhomeworkgivenhereisonlyaguide.Manyassignmentsgivenarelongtermandrequireyoutodevelopgoodtime-managementskills.

Students studyingASandALevel shouldexpect to spend2.5 to3.5hours eachnightonhomeworkand study consolidation, youshould record the homework set in their your Handbook.Experience has shown that students respond well to parentalinterest intheirworkandweencourageparentstomonitortheirchild's homework habits and take an interest in what is beingstudiedatschool.

HOMEWORKASSESSMENT

AND REPORTINGYou will be assessed regularly in a variety of different ways,dependingonwhat isappropriate to thesubjectandthe typeofwork being undertaken. For example, you will regularly sitend-of-topictests,completeextendedwrittenassignmentsorbeobservedpreparingcreativework.Thewayinwhichyourworkismarked varies from subject to subject. Thismeans thatwe arecontinually assessing you in each of your classes and using theresultsofthoseassessmentstoidentifyroutesforyoutoimproveanddevelop.

InbothYear12and13youwillsitexams inthesubjectsthatyouhave been studying. The exams assess what they have learntthroughouttheyear,soitisimportantthatyourevisealltheworktheyhavecovered.TheseexamsusuallytakeplaceduringJanuary.Detailsoftheassessmentstructurefortheindividualsubjectsareprovided in this booklet. You will also be informed at thebeginning of every year so that you understand the variousproceduresthatapply.

A report is produced twice a yearwhich contains an attainmentgradeandaneffort/engagementgradeforeverysubjectstudied.Thegradesareanaggregateofyourperformanceovertheyeartothat date and are calculated using the marks or grades gainedthroughouttheprecedingmonthsfromtheirtests,homeworkandotherassessments.

Studentswill be graded fromA*-U forA Level andA-U forASLevel for attainment and from 1-5 for effort/engagement. TheattainmentgradesarebasedonassessmentcriteriaproducedbyCIEandthecriteriaprintedonthereports.

Allstudentsareplacedinagroupwhichisoverseenbyatutor.Studentsmeettheirtutorseverydayatmorningregistration.Tutorsarethefirstpointofcontactforstudentsexperiencingdifficulties.TheyalsomonitortheuseoftheStudentPlannerwhichisusedforrecordinghomeworkandprovidesameansforstaffandparentsto

communicatewithoneanother.
