Historical Note1
The Gibbs Company were vaudeville artists based in Syracuse, NY and Fichtburg, MA, who
performed widely throughout Canada. The Company was led by William H. Gibbs (also known
as Bill or Billy), who was an actor and comedian. The Gibbs Company troupe were variously
known as The Gibbs Comedy Company, The Gibbs Family Entertainers, and Gibbs Empire
Amusement Co. The earliest materials in the collection indicate that William Gibbs began life as
an itinerant performer and vendor of ‘Kickapoo Indian Medicine’ in the early 1890’s alongside
Sioux and Winnebago Native Americans. Later, the family, consisting of wife May, and two
daughters, Marjorie and Lula, were involved in a number of different shows. The bookkeeping
records for the period of 1911-1914 document that the company operated as The Gibbs Company
with May, Lula, Marjorie, Edward Bolton, and Myron Gibbs (both acrobats), along with William
Gibbs. Originally, Ed Bolton performed with a brother as the Bolton Brothers before leaving to
fight in World War I in 1915 for Canadian forces. Around this time, it seems that Ed was in a
relationship with or married to Lula Gibbs, and was injured during his time at war. Though
unclear, this collection may have been assembled by Mr. Bolton. The family was also involved
in the La Reane Show.
Description of Papers
This collection documents the activities of the Gibbs family and their various entertainment
ventures throughout Canada and the United States. Throughout this collection, The Gibbs family

LaReane Shows, Woods Music Trio, Secardo and Ritchison’s Dogs, Al Post’s Animal Show,

Attractions, and Roy E. Fox’s Popular Players.

performance scenes, back lot scenes, family and leisure activities, and landscapes of locations
visited while on tour.
Also included in the collection are records, correspondence, and other printed materials
pertaining to performing vaudeville troupes. Two ledger books document transactions, profits
and losses of the Gibbs Comedy Company for each location visited between July 1911 and
December 1914.
While this collection represents a diverse geographic area, including Atlanta, Georgia, Lisbon
Iowa, and Moline, Illinois, the bulk of materials pertain to activities in New York state and
Eastern Canadian locations such as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Ontario.
The collection is arranged as it was received. This collection was purchased by Jonathan King
and sold to Howard Tibbals in 2000. Jonathan King included a typed inventory with some
identifications, dates, and locations for materials. There are gaps in the collection and not all
materials included in original inventory sheets are present as assembled to date. Some materials
were removed by Howard Tibbals before donation and may be included with other portions of
the Tibbals Collection. There are items in the collection that do not have an inventory number
recorded on them.
Jonathan King’s inventory sheets are divided by material type and numbered within each
division. The material type groupings are rearranged in some places in order to accommodate for
ease of the researcher and housing requirements, but items retain their original order within their
groupings. The groups are: A – large photographs, portraits of performers and performances; B –
Albums, account books; C – Printed Materials; E – photographic postcards, etc; F –
miscellaneous materials. No “D” list is present. King inventory numbers, where possible, are
included after the object. Inventory lists may be viewed in Appendix 1. Some materials have
been cataloged and digitized in the Museum collections database, and are available online
through the Ringling Collections portal (www.ringling.org/collections) Cataloged objects have
been assigned an object number, and in this finding aid they are referred to by their object
number.
