War Grave - Walter Hopkinson - A Soldier from Tibshelf

On a recent visit to Italy, local resident Mark Simpson took time to

pay his respects and visit the grave of Walter Hopkinson. The son of

Mary Hopkison he was a resident of Tibshelf who was killed during

the Second World War, and who is commemorated on the village

memorial.

Walter was a Private serving with the 14th Battalion The Sherwood

Foresters. He was part of the British 1st Division that landed in the

port of of Anzio in February 1944. Walter was killed in action less

than a month later on 17th March 1944..

Mark, a serving Lieutenant Colonel currently based at Pirbright in

Surrey, was participating in a battlefield study examining the Italian

Campaign of late 1943 and early 1944, which included landings at

Salerno and Anzio, and the infamous battle for the Monastery at

Monte Cassino. Mark an amateur military historian said 'The Italian

campaign is often referred to as the 'forgotten campaign' and mainly

an American effort (as portrayed in the Robert Mitchum film). Three

British Divisions were committed to this campaign - and paid a heavy

price. Rome was the first European capital to be liberated by the

Americans on June 4th 1944, but this event was somewhat over

shadowed by events in Normandy 2 days later. In fact soldiers who

fought in Italy were once very wrongly referred to as 'D-Day

Dodgers'.

Walter is buried in the Beachhead Cemetery at Anzio, along with over

2,000 other British casualties, which is about a mile from the actual

landing beaches. It is on a site that was very close to where a Casualty

Clearing Station was sited. Mark said 'As with all Commonwealth

Cemeteries, it is kept in a beautiful condition, and Walter is on the

front row almost next to the Stone of Remembrance (a feature of all

Cemeteries, inscribed with the words "Their name shall liveth for

evermore"). Mark also left a small remembrance cross by Walter’s

grave on which was written, 'From the village of Tibshelf - Never

forgotten'.

We aren't sure if any of Walters relatives still live in the village, but

Mark would be delighted to pass on the photos he took if there are.

Please contact the Parish Clerk for further information.

LONG LOST FAMILY - TIBSHELF STYLE !! The Parish Council have received two very different enquiries - anyone out there who might recognise the names they are searching for?? Please contact the Parish Clerk for further contact details

MAURICE CALVERT

I am trying to trace any living relatives of the late Maurice

Calvert who died in Gallipoli 1917.

He lived in Tibshelf with his wife and two children.

He married in 1913. Was born in Barlow April 21st 1895.

He was also a well known boxer.

Hope you can help.

Kind regards

Sue McKendrick

EDWIN AND MARTHA VAUGHAN

I am trying to find out if there are any descendant's in the

Vaughan family that take care of the grave of Edwin and

Martha Vaughan in the church cemetery. It is a large black

grave stone. Is there someone at the church that I can

contact? I am Eldon Vaughan's grandson. He was Edwin's

son that immigrated to the United States.

Thank You

Bill Mussel

In 1915 the German U-boat

menace to British shipping was

beginning to be felt. Increased

reliance on oil imports became of strategic importance and the

Government investigated the possibility of exploring for this

valuable resource in Britain. Areas of interest were Scotland,

Staffordshire and the coalfield area of North Derbyshire. Oil

seepages had been recorded in local collieries at Shirebrook and

Langwith and industrialist Lord Cowdray (a Liberal politician)

visited the Duke of Devonshire’s Estate office in Chesterfield to

negotiate the rights to drill on his land. An American drilling

team was employed to sink the well and an 85ft derrick was built

to handle the tools and casings to drill the well. The ‘roughnecks’

lived in two wooden houses on site that were eventually heated

by the natural gas bi-product of the oil extraction. Oil was never

produced in the war period but on the 27th May 1919 it was struck

at 3070ft and production started on the 7th of July. An average of

6 barrels a day flowed from Hardstoft No1 well under its own

natural pressure.

The oil was said to be dark brown in colour with a green

fluorescence, of good quality and resembling light Pennsylvanian

sweet crude.

The wells were originally authorised under the ‘Defence of the

Real Act’ during the war but ownership of the oil was disputed

after the act was repealed in 1918 and the Duke of Devonshire as

owner of the land and mineral rights served an injunction on the

Government for repossession of the well. In March 1923

Hardstoft No1 was taken over by the Duke and in settlement

paid the government for the plant and rig and compensated the

Babbington Coal Company for a pillar of coal that surrounded

the well.

The oil was stored on site in a tank and transported by road

tanker but a gravity fed pipeline direct from the well to Pilsley

station was eventually built.

The well silted up several times stopping production so by 1921

the oil was pumped and production increased to nearly 15 barrels

a day.

Two further wells were sunk, Hardstoft No2 in 1924 to the west

of No1 but was abandoned in 1925 after only striking gas. No3

well was drilled in 1925 although finding a slight show of thick

oil at 1500ft it was abandoned at 3825ft after failing to strike any

significant quantity of oil.

In 1938 No1 well was nearing exhaustion so was deepened to

maintain production throughout the Second World War but in

July 1945 it stopped pumping and production ceased. The well

was capped in 1952 and the site was sold a few years later.

The present owner, Mr Phillip Schofield, acquired the site in

1977 and set up Oilwells Nursery and Garden Centre.

Hardstoft No 1 well head still seeps a little of Tibshelf’s ‘black

gold’ just to remind us of what still lies deep beneath our

countryside.

To this day the Duke of Devonshire remains the only person in

the UK to own the oil under his land.

Parking Lincoln Street /Lincoln Close

Parked cars on Lincoln Street leading to Lincoln Close are

causing some real problems for all the residents on those

streets. The dustbin lorry has not been able to collect bins

because of problems of access and

emergency vehicles would also be

badly obstructed if they were needed.

Derbyshire County Council, who are

the Highway authority, are going to

be notifying residents about the need

to park behind the houses, off the

highway, wherever possible. If this is not achieved

voluntarily the County Council may have to look at other

forms of enforcement to enable freer access for vehicles.

Memorial Benches

The Parish Council are planning to renew the benches at S h e t l a n d R o a d P a r i s h Sportsground. If anyone would like to consider purchasing a memorial bench we would be happy to cons ider s i t ing i t on the Sportsground . Contact the Clerk if this would be something you are interested in doing..

Tibshelf Parish Council Support…..

Tibshelf Parish Council has been actively working with the School and the County

Council to address concerns of local residents regarding car parking whilst dropping

off and picking up pupils at Tibshelf Community School. The Parish Council in

partnership with the County Council have been looking at ways to alleviate the

traffic problems and ensure that the health and safety of pupils whilst crossing the

roads to and from the school is maintained.

Following discussions with the school Head Teacher, Councillors Allison Beckett

and Pam Trevelyan arranged that the school car park and bus parking bay could be

used by parents at the start and end of each school day to lessen the parking concerns

on Raven Avenue and surrounding areas. District Councillor Ray Heffer recently

handed out leaflets to individuals parked in the area, urging them to respect locals

access to their property.

Ruth and Jayne took part in the ‘Sparkle Walk ‘ in Chesterfield on 20th June to raise funds for Ashgate Hospice and would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported them in raising £275.00. They walked 10k wearing their flashing bunny ears along with 1500 other participants. It was quite a sight as they all set off at 10.00 p.m. just as darkness was falling.! Ashgate Hospice were hoping to raise £70,000 from the walk towards their £1million bed appeal over the next two years to ensure they can keep all their beds open.
