Sunday 26 May 2019 – 11.00 am – Joint with EMGS Centenary of first UK oil discovery at Hardstoft, Derbyshire Tim Pharoah and Kevin Topham Meeting place: Oilwell Nursery, Chesterfield Rd, Tibshelf DE55 5NP This is a two part visit. The morning will be spent at the Oilwell Nursery which is the site of the first discovery of oil in the UK on 27 May 1919. Philip Schofield of Oilwell Nurseries will welcome us and Tim Pharoah of the BGS will describe the reasons behind the search for UK oil at the time and why Hardstoft was selected as one of the drilling sites. We will then travel to Kelham Hall, between Southwell and Newark (postcode NG23 5QX), at 2 pm to visit the museum dedicated to the WW2 Eakring oil and the early North Sea gas discoveries. Its founder, Kevin Topham, will talk about his involvement in the early offshore exploration, including the Sea Gem disaster. Lunch on route – many pubs / cafes on the way. Wednesday 12 June 2019 – Evening Walk 18:00 start Duckmanton Cutting, Derbyshire Paul Guion Meet at car park in Arkwright Town (SK 427 708; Post Code S44 5BW), which is reached from the A632 Chesterfield to Bolsover road. At the roundabout at the entrance to Arkwright Town, turn onto Hardwick Drive. At the next roundabout turn right and then immediately right into the car park. Participants will be required to wear hard hats and high-vis jackets. It is likely to be wet underfoot, so wellingtons are advised. There are no toilets at Duckmanton Cutting, but plenty of undergrowth! Coal-bearing Carboniferous rocks of Derbyshire occur within the East Pennine Coalfield, which extends northwards into Yorkshire, and was formerly worked extensively for coal and other natural resources. Exploitation of these resources has declined in recent years, and many former workings infilled, hence opportunities to view such rocks at outcrop are few. The objective of the trip is to view coal seams and associated strata at one of the limited outcrops available. Late Langsettian and early Duckmantian rocks will be examined during the trip. Sunday 14 July 2019 – 11:00 start Titterstone Clee Hill, Shropshire Andrew Jenkinson (SGS) Meet at the car park in Clee Village on the A4117 at the cattle grid. (SO594 753). The visit will concentrate on Titterstone Clee Hill examining the Carboniferous sediments and the dolerite intrusion (Dhustone). There are excellent views from the summit. Cars will be used to limit the walking. Bring a packed lunch (the village cafe & pub are both closed). The visit should finish at 5.00pm.

GeoWeek 4-12 May 2019 GeoWeek is a new initiative that aims to promote 'active geoscience' via a nine-day 'week' of fieldwork activities taking place across the UK between 4 and 12 May 2019. GeoWeek seeks to introduce as many members of the public to geoscience as possible, mainly through outdoor activities such as urban, rural or coastal fieldwork. More details of activities on the web at www.geoweek.org.uk or their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GeoWeekUKI/. GeoWeek: The NSSGGA at Biddulph Grange Sunday May 5th 12:00-15:00 GeoMaps Rock! Augmented Reality Sandbox and Digital Mapping of the Geology of the Local Area.

An Augmented Reality Sandbox will be on display. Visitors will be able to create landscape models by shaping sand while, at the same time, 3D computer visualisation techniques will be used to generate a terrain colour map and topographic contour lines, as well as the formation of water bodies such as lakes. The system provides an effective way of teaching map reading skills, as well as visualising a variety of geographical, geological and hydrological concepts. The sandbox was built by staff in the School of Geology, Geography and

the Environment at Keele University. It works by combining data gathered by an Xbox Kinect sensor, which measures the distance from the sensor to the sand below, and a piece of clever software assigns a colour to this distance which is then projected onto the sand. Visitors are invited to play with the sand and to use their imagination to create beautiful landscapes. There will also be an interactive display of the geology of the local area using digital mapping techniques.

NSGGA web pages: www.esci.keele.ac.uk/nsgga The NSGGA website is on the move! The servers that have hosted the NSGGA web pages since 2006 are very much past their best before date. Before we lose everything, the website is moving to a shiny new home so keep an eye out on www.nsgga.org over the next few months. Once the transition is complete we will redirect the old site to the new one automatically.
