Franklin Cohen is head of the clarinet department and the Frank K.
Griesinger Chair in Clarinet at CIM. He has been the principal clarinet of The
Cleveland Orchestra since 1976. First-prize winner in the International Music
Competition in Munich in 1968, Mr. Cohen received a bachelor's degree from
The Juilliard School of Music. He is a frequent soloist with The Cleveland
Orchestra, appearing twice yearly; he has performed solo in Cleveland, Carne-
gie Hall, throughout the U.S., Europe and the Far East with conductors Chris-
topher von Dohnányi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lorin Maazel, Jahja Ling, Yoel
Levi, Leonard Slatkin, Christoph Eschenbach, Eduardo Mata and Jesús López-
Cobos. Mr. Cohen's recordings on the London/Decca label include the Brahms
Clarinet Trio, Op. 114, with pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy and cellist Stephen
Geber, and the two Brahms sonatas, recorded with Mr. Ashkenazy. He also
recorded the Debussy Rhapsody on the DGG label with The Cleveland Orches-
tra, Pierre Boulez conducting; a recording that won two GRAMMY Awards.
Mr. Cohen has served on many international juries, including the 1998 Munich
Competition.
Stephen Rose is a member of the violin faculty at CIM. He was appointed to
the violin section of The Cleveland Orchestra in 1997, and is now principal
second violin of The Orchestra. Mr. Rose received a Bachelor of Music degree
from CIM and Master of Music degree from Eastman School of Music. Teach-
ers include William Preucil, David Cerone, David Updegraff and Sally
O’Reilly. He has appeared in recital and chamber music concerts throughout
North America and Europe. Mr. Rose was the former first violinist of the Ever-
est Quartet, the Resident String Quartet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony,
from 1992-1996. The Quartet was a top prize-winner at the 1995 Banff Inter-
national String Quartet Competition and presented concerts and master classes
throughout the U.S. Mr. Rose has presented master classes at the National
Orchestral Institute and the New World Symphony and has been a faculty
member at ENCORE School for Strings and Kent/Blossom. He has been a
participant at summer music festivals, including the Mainly Mozart Festival,
Seattle Chamber Music Festival, Orcas Island, Music at Gretna, Mimir Cham-
ber Music Festival, Pacific Music Festival (Japan) and Festival der Zukunft
in Switzerland. He received an Alumni Achievement Award from CIM in
2005.
Kirsten Docter is a member of the viola and chamber music faculties at CIM.
She was the first prize winner of the 1991 Primrose International and the 1992
American String Teachers Association Viola Competitions. As a member of
the Naumburg Chamber Music Award winning Cavani Quartet, Ms. Docter
performs regularly on major series and festivals throughout North America and
Europe. Appearances include the Carnegie Hall Centennial Series in New
York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.,
the Ambassador Series in Los Angeles and Festival de L'Epau in France. The
quartet records for the Azica Records label. Ms. Docter has collaborated with
such musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Robert Mann, Donald Weilerstein, Franklin
Cohen, Warren Jones and Stephanie Blythe. A dedicated teacher of both the
viola and chamber music, she has given master classes at many colleges, uni-
versities, festivals and schools throughout the country. She has performed and
taught at numerous summer festivals including Interlochen Arts Camp, Made-
line Island Music Festival, Kneisel Hall, Yale Summer School of Music and
Art at Norfolk, Yellowbarn, Mimir Festival, and the Perlman Music Program.
She serves on the board of the American Viola Society. Docter is a graduate of
the Oberlin College Conservatory and the Curtis Institute of Music. Major
teachers include Karen Tuttle, Jeffery Irvine and Lynne Ramsey. Ms. Docter
resides in Cleveland, OH with husband Paul Cox and their sons Sebastian and
Benjamin.
Dr. Melissa Kraut is a highly recognized and sought after pedagogue. In addi-
tion to being on the conservatory cello faculty, Dr. Kraut is also teacher and
coordinator of the cello Preparatory Division and Sato Center for Suzuki Stud-
ies. In the summers, Dr. Kraut is a faculty member at the acclaimed Meadow-
mount School of Music in upstate New York where she teaches cellists from
around the world. Prior to her appointment at CIM, Dr. Kraut served as associ-
ate professor of cello at the University of Central Florida (UCF). While in Or-
lando, Dr. Kraut was the educational/artistic director for A Gift for Music, a
string program that provides free instruments and instruction to 900 inner-city
children. Dr. Kraut was on the summer faculty at the Interlochen Center Arts
for nine summers and served as the area coordinator for strings for two years.
Dr. Kraut holds a Bachelor of Music degree from CIM, Master of Arts degree
from the University of Iowa and a Doctor of Music degree from Northwestern
University. Her principal instructors were Alan Harris and Hans Jorgen-Jensen.
Kathryn Brown is associate head of the CIM piano department and vocal
coach. She performs internationally as recitalist, chamber musician and con-
certo soloist. She has received numerous international prizes, including the
Louis Sudler Prize for the Arts and the Darius Milhaud Prize, and was first-
prize winner of the National Young Artists Competition, San Antonio Interna-
tional Keyboard Competition and Pro Piano Competition. Ms. Brown has ap-
peared in recital at the Library of Congress and Columbia Artists’ Community
Concerts Series. Her chamber music credits include performances at the Marl-
boro Music Festival in collaborations with members of the Guarneri String
Quartet and the Beaux Arts Trio. As a member of the Verdehr Trio, she ap-
peared in recital at the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and in London
and Prague. Ms. Brown studied piano with Deborah Moriarty, Ralph Votapek
and Yong Hi Moon at Michigan State University, Julian Martin at the Peabody
Conservatory and studied privately with Maria Curcio in London. She received
an Artist Diploma from CIM under the tutelage of Paul Schenly.
