Two years ago, Jamie McMurray won the Day-tona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same year. Last year, everything fell apart.

After three victories -- he also won the Charlotte Mo-

tor Speedway fall race -- McMurray plummeted to 27th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings last season, finishing in the top five only twice and win-ning the pole at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.

Needless to say, changes were in order during the offseason. Team owner Chip Ganassi overhauled the entire team in the wake of disappointing seasons by both McMurray and Juan Pablo Montoya. "Well, Chip has made a really big commitment," McMurray said. "I mean, they changed a lot of management. There's been a tremendous amount of changes to the '42' car (Montoya). There have been quite a few changes to the '1' car (his). We hired a lot of new people from different organizations.

"You know, the frustrating part is that we won races with the guys who were here before, won some really big races," he said. "But I think the morale in the shop got way down, and everyone ... you know, you start criticizing everybody, and Chip needed to make a change to get everybody pumped back up."

Based on preseason testing, the speeds at Day-tona International Speedway figure to be way up. It appears that speeds of more than 200 mph will be commonplace in the Budweiser Shootout on Feb. 18 and the Daytona 500 on Feb. 26.

"For me it doesn't really feel any different," said McMurray, who is from Joplin, Mo. "You

McMurray Sees Changes For Bettercan't tell a big difference from 190 to 205. You do at a place like Texas or Atlanta, but here (Daytona) not so much because you have so much grip, the cars drive so well, and you don't feel the big speed difference.

"I don't know why NASCAR is OK with going a little faster now. My guess would be that they have become educated on how fast the cars can go and, if they get out of control, how stable they will be. I always thought 200 mph was the 'don't go past' zone, but they seem to be comfortable with that, and the car doesn't feel a lot different."

2010 Daytona 500 winner Jamie McMurray is all right with the changes made by owner Chip Ganassi. He's also good with the expected increase in speeds for the season, based on preseason testing. (John Clark/NASCAR This Week photo)

Treatments Do Exist for Hepatitis C

PuzzleAnswers

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I believe I read in your column about something that can be given for hepatitis C. My doctor says there isn’t any treatment. Will you please advise me? -- Anon.

ANSWER: Chronic infection (lifetime infection) happens to about 80 percent of those infected with the hepatitis C virus. Worldwide, the virus infects 170 million people. In the United States, 3.2 million are infected. Of the chronically infected, close to 20 percent will develop either liver cirrhosis or liver cancer. It takes 20 to 30 years before signs of such complications become apparent.

Predicting who benefits from treatment, therefore, is not an easy task. Perhaps your doctor said you would not benefit from treatment now. Indications favoring treatment are finding hepatitis C virus RNA (ribonucleic acid) in the blood and documenting liver changes suggesting cirrhosis is beginning to take place. As I said, only 20 percent of those infected with this virus are at risk for these complications.

Treatment isn’t 100 percent effective for all. Suc-cess depends on which strain of virus infects a person. Strains 1 and 4 are less susceptible to treatment.

Standard treatment is ribavirin and peginterferon. New treatments are about to become available, and they show great promise in improving treatment success. Boceprevir and teleprevir are going to be launched for general use later this year. They will establish a new era for treatment.

The booklet on hepatitis A, B and C details these ill-nesses, how they are acquired and how they are treated. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 503W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual let-

ters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Newly returned wounded veterans have the option of entering a three-year internship program to become federal contracting specialists. The program, at the Acquisitions Academy of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Fred-erick, Md., is called Warriors to Workforce. Veterans can earn 24 business credits, required to become contracting professionals for the federal government, followed by the internship.

The Academy has three directions of emphasis: --Contracting Professional School: Graduates complete

the core courses to get an Acquisitions Certificate at Levels I, II and III. Possible specialties are Leasing, Health Care Services, Technology and Construction. Upon graduation, a veteran will have the education background to get a Federal Acquisitions Certification in Contracting and be eligible for positions starting at GS-11.

Wounded Warriors to Workforce

--Program Management: Coursework will enable gradu-ates to certify as a federal program and project manager both in the VA and throughout federal government.

--Acquisition Internship: This is a paid two-year intern-ship starting at a GS-7 with a track to GS-11. Emphasis is on leadership, communication, business savvy and more.

Facilities Management and Supply Chain Management courses will be coming soon.

No matter which avenue is taken, the program em-phasizes training and on-the-job experience. If there’s any field that needs new workers, it’s acquisitions in the federal government.

To qualify, a veteran must have a service-related injury that impacts employment and little education after high school. Veterans are expected to work for at least three years after certification, and are guaranteed a job in acquisi-tions in the VA. The cost of the course is $97,489, which is picked up by VA funding. The first-year business courses are covered by the GI Bill.

To learn more about the program, go online to the Ac-quisitions Academy at www.acquisitionacademy.va.gov or call the school at (202) 461-0749.
