Delaware Greenways is pairing up with the City of New Castle to host an Arbor Day celebration at Historic Penn Farm on April 25th from 10am-‐2pm. The City has recently been designated as a “Tree City” and is in the process of increasing their canopy cover and informing the public on the importance of planting trees in our community.There will be tree plantings, children’s activities, exhibits, farm tours and more! The event is rain or shine so come prepared to get dirty! Free admission and food will be available for purchase by U of D graduate, Leigh Ann Tona’s, “I Don’t Give a Fork!” food truck. Also, plan to stop by the Historic Penn Farm Visioning Booth. We are in the process of developing a comprehensive plan for the farm and want YOUR IDEAS for making the farm an active, productive community resource and gathering place. Ideas will be received through June 2014, so if you cannot make it to Arbor Day, check out ► Historic Penn Farm for more information on other opportunities to share your ideas.
James Watt and Martin Dickie, owners of the UK’s fastest-growing brewery, stopped in town Friday afternoon to
film a segment of Brew Dogs that concluded their Delaware tour. The episode will air in June on the Esquire Network. The 1st Delaware Regiment Revolutionary War re-enactors
provided the back-drop and add much flavor to the afternoon.

Buddy, the first Seeing Eye Dog“Buddy delivered to me the divine gift of freedom,” said Morris
Frank (1908-1980), the first American to benefit from a Seeing Eye dog. Morris Frank was a blind man from Nashville who helped start the first school that trained seeing eye dogs. His dog Buddy is considered to be the first seeing eye dog in America.This amazing story started in November 1927, when Morris Frank was a 20-year-old student at Vanderbilt University and a man very unhappy about his dependency on others to get around. Frank's father read him an article by Dorothy Eustis, a woman living in Switzerland who had seen shepherds training dogs to lead blind people get around. Excited by the idea, Frank wrote a letter to Eustis and received a response letter 30 days later inviting him to come see for himself. Frank then took a ship to Europe and trained extensively with a dog that had been bred specifically to lead a blind person. The training was hard, but after weeks with the dog, Frank could get around the nearby Swiss village holding tightly to a harness to which Buddy was strapped.Learn more at: ▶ Thank You Buddy
