The Rector Writes... Dear friends
May is a very busy month for us. Please note the following items.
Special Sunday services in May
Sunday May 6th: All age service
Sunday May 13th: Parade Service
We look forward to welcoming the Scouts, Guides, and Cubs to our
10.30 morning service. Young people are especially encouraged to be
a part of this time of worship and celebration.
Sunday May 20th: End of year Sunday Club service followed by a
Sunday Club BBQ in the renovated parish centre. All welcome.
Sunday May 27th: Pentecost open air service at the old church ruin off Killiney Hill
Avenue (the original Killiney Parish Church!). We will be joining together with the
congregation of Holy Trinity Killiney to celebrate Holy Communion. The service will
begin at 10.30am. If you are driving it will be best to park down in the Killiney Dart
Station car park and take the 5 minute walk back up the hill. For those who are less
able there will be limited parking on Marino Avenue. If the weather prevents us
from meeting outside we will gather as usual in St Matthias’.
Parish Centre Renovation
This month will also see the completion of building works to the parish centre. All
that will remain to do will be the flooring and partition doors into the Day Room.
This final piece of work cannot take place until the concrete flooring has dried out
fully (takes up to 6 months). This is an enormously exciting time for us as a Parish and we look forward to many memorable occasions in this wonderful resource in the months and years ahead.
Fete
Finally, please put the date of the St Matthias’ fete in your diary—Saturday 9thJune.
This is a fantastic event in the life of our parish and I hope as many people as
possible will get involved and support it.
See Bill Fleeton’s article for further details
of how you can help.

If the date you have been scheduled for is not possible please feel free to swap with
someone else on the rota. Please deal directly with the person concerned and
remember to make contact with them in good time!
If you are reading from an Epistle please conclude the reading with the words:
Th is is the Word of the Lord.
If you are reading from the Gospel only use the wording for a
Communion service if it is in fact a communion service. Otherwise please
conclude the reading with the words: Th is is the word of the Lord.
The congregation need only stand for a Gospel reading if it is Communion.
Finally, whether you are reading or leading prayers please remember to
speak slowly, clearly and loudly! Even with a mic’ the volume is not
sufficient for all members of the congregation.
Many thanks for your participation in our worship.

A Word From The Curate
Our perception of our surroundings, of the world we live in and are part of, can often lead us to obscure views and opinions.
Is the glass half full or half empty? How we perceive others and how they, in turn, perceive us, in some small way forms part of what we call—society. Think about it— so many of us have views on so many differing facets of life. However, our perception of such issues can be far removed from the truth.
It is so easy to have pre-conceived ideas. Take, for example, Easter. For some, it will signify Bunnies and Easter eggs. For others, it will mean a Cross, an empty Cross, but this is only part of the truth.
I was myself recently reminded that Easter is the Season of a ‘week of weeks’—some 50 days ending at Pentecost.
How do those who are not Christians perceive us? What do we signify? What do we represent or indeed, Who do we represent?
This is an exciting time in the Church year, an exciting time in any
year, even an exciting time in our own lives. We celebrate The
Resurrection, The Ascension and The Coming of The Holy
Spirit. Yes, we are the Easter People.
A thought for each of us in the weeks ahead.
‘You are created in the image of God. You are a God Carrier. You are God’s representative round here.’—
Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Jean Paul—St Matthias’ Parishioner
As Jean settles into her new home in Monkstown, we
send our best wishes and we are sure that this next stage in her
life will be happy, friendly and very positive.
Jean is most practical and wherever she saw a need, she
encouraged so many ventures in our Parish.
In the 1970’s, I first met Jean and her husband John
when we attended a series of house discussion groups. The
topics ranged from Christianity and other religions, family life
and philosophy. Alec and Beatrice Reid also contributed and it
was a privilege to be part of this stimulating company.
Tidings, the communication newsletter, has had several
editors, including Jean, and I remember delivering notices to her
house where she produced the monthly editions using a
typewriter, but without computer, printer, email or smart phone.
Jean realised that many young mothers new to the area would welcome an
opportunity to meet and share their experiences and she set up a Mother and

Toddlers Group in the Parish Centre. Some of these mothers still keep in
touch, they form part of the Church Cleaning rota and we thank them.
Our Annual Fête is a big event and Jean organised it for several
years. She did it with great humour, skill and success no matter what the
weather was like on the day.
Jean and John had a great interest in the creative arts and their family
members include a jeweller, media and graphic artists. They also
encouraged education in the community and wider
community and supported the first educate-together school,
The Dalkey School Project. Their daughters Vanya and
Debbie also represented our parish when they visited St
Matthias’ Parish Gahogo, in Shyogwe diocese in Ruanda.
Sometime after John’s passing, Jean set up the 55
Club whose aim was for members to meet on occasions, to
hear a talk, have a meal together, go to a theatre, or some
daytime outing. The idea is successful, we had travel talks
about South America, a visit to Farmleigh and Nordic
Walking! We hope that Jean will join us at future events.
To move house is not easy. But we know that Jean
has made a practical decision and she will keep in touch.
Her good friend lives close by and Monkstown is a
welcoming community and neighbourhood with many facilities. We have
enjoyed your friendship, Jean, and will continue to do so.

~ Maria Waters ~
Sunday Club met twice in April. Our lesson on April 22nd was called “Fizzy Faith”. Paul’s words in Corinthians 5:17 are "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature. The old things have passed away; behold, new things have come." That’s kind of tough for an adult to understand, let alone a child so we used a science experiment to explain what the difference between living without God and living as a good Christian and how happy and alive we feel with Jesus in our hearts.
We demonstrated how a bottle of plain water has no sparkle, no fizz, even though being delicious and healthy to drink it’s not that much fun to look at, as the kids noticed it’s “plain” and “boring” whereas a bottle of sparkling water is full of life, it fizzes, pops makes sizzling sounds and as we found out during the lesson can spray it’s contents everywhere soaking Amy as she was opening it and the other children sitting around the table, the majority of it spraying all over little Clara Maxwell! Thankfully, Clara isn’t afraid of getting wet and we all laughed. It certainly succeeded in demonstrating that when you have God in your heart you are bursting with life and more like the sparkling water that the plain!

We will have news soon of our Children’s Day Celebration which
concludes our Sunday Club teachings for the year. Hopefully, depending on the Parish Centre renovations, we will be able to
have our usual BBQ at the end of May (date to be confirmed). We will also be unveiling our plaque to commemorate placement of our
Time Capsule, which will be hidden for 100 years to be opened by the future parishioners of St Matthias’ Church in 2112 so look out for
news of those events.
On April 29th
, Sunday Club
focused on Jesus as The
Good Shepherd and the
importance of following in his footsteps. We had
lots of fun with games and
craft to help us understand
how we can follow Jesus
and how great it is to be
part of his flock. Roisin

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP!
If you are a parent of small children in the church could you
please help us with Sunday Club. It really doesn’t take up a lot
of time and there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the
delight on the children’s faces when they hear a story, create
something to take home, or play games while at the same time
learning about being a true Christian.
You will be trained and your involvement can be as little as ONE
SUNDAY A MONTH—that’s only an hour of your time to keep
Sunday Club running, without your help we cannot continue
and the children and the church will lose something very
valuable.
Please call Maria Waters on 087 785 1735 if you can help.
Thank you.

Where do you live?
I have lived on Johnstown Road since I was 2. We lived
in Leixlip before that. We also have a home in
Tipperary where we like to visit.
How long have you been coming to St Matthias’?
I'm attending St Matthias since June 2010 so almost 2
years now.
Where do you sit in Church?
I tend to sit in the back of the church, but finding
myself moving more towards the middle in recent days.
Maybe I'm getting more confident.
What do you most like about St Matthias’?
There is a fantastic community spirit in St Matthias.
People simple go out of their way to make you feel
welcome and at home.
About the Interviewee
A l i c e G e r v i n was born in 1983. She went to Johnstown primary school followed by St Joseph of Cluny Secondary School. She studied Transport Engineering and Motor Industry Management in DIT Bolton Street for 2 years and studied BSc Nursing (Intellectual Disability) in the University of Limerick for 4 years. Alice is currently working as a Staff Nurse with adults with intellectual disabilities. She has a vast array of hobbies such as vintage cars, archery, horse riding, cycling, and go karting. Alice is engaged to Liam and they both love going down to the countryside in Tipperary with her golden retriever Duchess, and rescue dog Toby.

If you were the Rector, what is the one thing you would like to
change?
Wow, difficult question to answer but it would be lovely
to see more young people come to church but I'm not sure
if I know how one would do it. I'm sure most rectors
have this issue.
Do you ever feel close to God? When do you feel close to God?
What do you do to feel close to God?
I have felt particularly close to God since I began
attending St Matthias and the Alpha Course. I felt
particularly close to God when my uncle died last
summer under tragic circumstances. It was a very
difficult time for the family but I really felt his presence.
I also feel very close to God when out in the countryside,
especially on horseback when out in nature.
What is your favourite Gospel story and why?
This is probably the obvious choice but the story of the
Resurrection would be the part of the Bible that means
the most to me. For a man to have suffered so much for
us is just incredible.
Name one great blessing you got this year so far.
I'm blessed to have such a great relationship with my
family. My extended family are extremely close to me.
My relationship with my parents was strained during my
teenage years but thankfully my relationship is amazing
with them now. Recently a family member recovered
from health issues against all odds which was a huge
blessing. I also feel my dogs are great blessings too.
Do you pray? Do you have a favourite time to pray and when?
Sometimes I pray at night time before I go to bed. If I
hear of someone who needs my prayers I often pray for
them during the day when I think of those people.

Hobbies & interests
~ Alice Gervin ~
Since I was a very young child I remember always
being fascinated by cars. My neighbours used to find it
amusing asking me the names and engine sizes of cars
on the road when I was six years old. Santa got me a
Barbie Ferrari because the Barbie by itself would have
been too boring for me. I never lost the interest. During
my leaving cert I applied for Intellectual Disability
Nursing, and Transport Engineering and Motor Industry
Management in DIT. Unfortunately I didn’t get the
nursing which was a blessing in disguise at the time
because in hindsight it was possibly no harm to have a few more years of maturing
before I later pursued that career. I did two years of the course and learned a great deal
about both the engineering of cars and the nature of the motor industry. As much as I
enjoyed the course, I felt cars were a hobby and a c a r i n g p ro f e s s io n was to
be my future.
Five years ago during my last semester studying Nursing, I bumped into a man
called Tim in Lidl in Tipperary. We were both purchasing motorbike helmets. Mine was
for go-karting, and his was for his vintage
motorbikes. He spoke about his big
collection of vintage cars, motorbikes, and
tractors which fascinated me. That day I
took his business card, and made a
promise to myself when I got my degree
and a job I’d buy myself a vintage car. I
put great thought into it and remembered
from college that the beetle had one of the
simplest engines. If I was going to learn about the workings of my car along with enjoy
driving it, then it would have to be a beetle. But of course it had to be a nice girly
convertible. I rang up Tim and he helped me pick a car and buy it.
But simply driving the car would not be enough. I wanted to be part of a
community of car lovers so I joined Eircooled (www.eircooled.com). An Irish car club set
continued on next page…...
17
up for people interested in cars with an air-cooled engine. The most common of these
being the vintage Volkswagens, Porsches, Citroen 2CV, BMW Isetta, vintage Fiat 500 etc.
I have only come across Volkswagens and Porsches in the club myself. I joined the club
and did a little research on the vehicle. I bought a 1972 Volkswagen beetle 1302LS
Karmann Convertible, and had it shipped from Holland. Within 3 days I attended my
first event, The Eirepares Show in Monard, Co Tipperary. This is an air-cooled vintage
Volkswagen show which is quite popular. I won my first Trophy for my category at that
event and one every year at that show since. What a great introduction to the vintage
car scene. I met such wonderful people from all walks of life, of every age group and
from as far away as California and Australia. All of whom are very decent, helpful people
who are all passionate about their hobby. At that very show I met my fiancé, Liam,
another Eircooled member. However, it wouldn’t be until a year later before we would
go on our first date.
The Eircooled club was founded in 2006 by a small number of like-minded
enthusiasts. The club had 135 members in February 2007 and has since grown to
approximately 780 to date. Though the club is based on the internet, there are regional
meetings organised by members, the most active region being the Dublin region. We
meet the first Wednesday of the month outside Eddie Rockets in Stillorgan at 7pm which
involves a catch up with friends and general chit chat. We may go for a leisurely drive
after the meeting, and go for a bite to eat in places such as The Goat, or Johnny Foxes.
The ages of vehicles in the club range from the 1950s to 1980s. Many of our
members have had featured articles about their vehicles in international magazines such
as the UK based magazine, VolksWorld. Only last November my fiancé Liam had his
1960 Volkswagen Split Panel Van featured in Volksworld.
It is a wonderful community to be part of and I’ve no doubt I will remain a
member of that community into the future.

We had an enjoyable outing with a party of 15 to Farmleigh House on Thursday 19th April.
Farmleigh House was bought from the Guinness Family by the Irish Government in 1999 for 29.2 million euro and spent more than 20 million euro on
renovating it.
President Obama and Queen Elizabeth stayed there on their visit to Ireland last year.
It is an impressive building with lovely gardens, and is set in 78 acres of prime land. The flowers and trees were just perfect for this time of the year.
We also had refreshments in the Boat House Restaurant, which were very tasty and the staff very helpful.
A big Thank You to those who kindly drove there and back and saved some of us from having to make the journey in our own cars.

Social Clubs
We meet on Friday 4th May 8pm at Susie’s to discuss
British writer Salley Vickers’ “Miss
Garnet’s Angel”. (salleyvickers.com) It
has been reissued as a classic edition
due to its continued popularity; it is
written with poise and wit which belies
the novel’s deeper themes of love,
death, and the growth of the human
spirit. The author writes—I wrote ‘Ms Garnet’s Angel’ out of a potent mix: a love of Venice, and a love of art and
also ancient literature.
The following book we are reading for June will be the double
book (published as one volume) “If This Is A Man” & “The
Truce” by Primo Levi, an Italian Jewish chemist & writer,
chronicling his accounts on the year he spent as an Auschwitz
concentration camp prisoner and on his long odyssey in eastern
Europe to return home after release from Auschwitz,
respectively.
If you would like to find out more about the Book Club, please contact Bill Fleeton at (01) 282 4247.
Forthcoming Club Activities
It was suggested at our last outing to
Farmleigh that we next visit Mount Congreve
Gardens (see their website
www.mountcongreve.com) near Waterford City. This is an
unforgettable 70 acre garden with massed planting of rhododendrons, azaleas,
shrubs and trees all overlooking the River Suir. We propose Thursday 10th or
Thursday 31st May as possible dates. Please let us know soon if you have a
preference. We could meet at the Church car park at 9:30am and travel by car.
We can have tea/lunch en route. Everyone welcome. Please telephone Bill or
Ann at 01 282 4247 or email [email protected].

Inv itat ion f rom Daphne Whelan I am holding a community social night on Sunday May 6th bank holiday weekend. It's in the Tramyard cafe-wine bar in Castle Street in Dalkey at 7:30pm.
Would love anybody that wants to come along would do so! People are asked to bring a friend OR come alone and meet new friends.
The last one was Good … but not enough people came unfortunately.
As there is nothing in it for me other than I enjoy it, the guy that owns the cafe has to put on staff etc, so I kind of need to know numbers before the event. Please let me know if you are coming and for how many people by Friday May 4th.
Many thanks,
